◇教学过程◇
Step 1 Leading in
Greet the class warmly. Review the personality adjectives and vocabulary from the previous lessons by asking a few quick questions: What adjectives describe a good teacher What about a good engineer
Write two sentences on the board and ask students to identify the connectors:
I am patient and I don't get angry easily. (and)
Neither my parents nor I think I will make a good accountant. (neither...nor...)
Introduce the topic of this class: We have learned neither...nor... in the previous lessons. Today we will learn more useful connecting words and phrases, as well as object clauses introduced by that.
Step 2 Presentation — Part A (Connecting ideas)
Present the six expressions on the screen with their Chinese translations:
both...and... → ……和……都
not only...but (also)... → 不但……而且……
either...or... → 要么……要么……
neither...nor... → 既不……也不……
except → 除了……之外
as well as → 除……之外,也;和
Read the example sentences from the grammar section on Page 1. Ask students to read along and pay attention to the words in bold.
Explain the usage of each expression:
Expression Meaning Example

not only...but (also)... 不但……而且……(强调添加) Not only the students but (also) their teacher has done the survey.

not only...but (also)..., either...or..., neither...nor... 连接两个主语时,谓语动词的单复数取决于最靠近动词的那个主语(就近原则)。
Give additional examples for each rule and write them on the board.

Write the following sentences on the board and ask students to observe the structure:
I hope that I can be a teacher.
She is sure that she needs to work hard.
Explain the concept of object clauses introduced by that:
An object clause serves as the object of a sentence (宾语从句在句子中作宾语).
The conjunction that is used to introduce an object clause that is a statement (陈述句).
Object clauses can follow:
Verbs: hope, think, believe, know, mean, say 等
Adjectives: lucky, glad, sure, certain, happy, sorry 等
Present the sentences from the grammar section on Page 3. Ask students to identify the main clause and the object clause in each sentence:
Millie feels lucky that she has good teachers in her school. (adj. + object clause)
She hopes that she can be a teacher when she grows up. (v. + object clause)
She is sure that she needs to work hard. (adj. + object clause)
Explain the omission of that in informal English:
Do you think (that) you're creative
I hope (that) I am!
Provide additional examples and ask students to practice dropping that in informal contexts.
【课堂活动——句子转换】(用时约4分钟)
Ask students to combine the two sentences into one sentence using an object clause introduced by that:
(1) I want to become a fashion designer. I know this. → ______
(2) She is creative. Her mum is certain about this. → ______
(3) My dream will come true. I believe this. → ______
(4) He has a good job. He is lucky about this. → ______

(1) I know that I want to become a fashion designer.
(2) Her mum is certain that she is creative.
(3) I believe that my dream will come true.
(4) He is lucky that he has a good job.
Step 5 Practice — Part B (Complete the passage)
Present Sandy's passage on Page 3. Ask students to read the box of clauses and complete the passage using the correct object clauses. Remind them to add that where necessary.
Ask students to complete the task individually, then check answers with their deskmates.
Check the answers together and invite a student to read the completed passage aloud.
Answers:
I want to become a fashion designer in the future. I know (1) that this won't be easy for me. I think (2) that fashion designers probably work hard. I'm willing to work hard too. I'll do anything to make my dream come true! My mum is certain (3) that I'll be a successful designer in the future. She always describes me as a very creative person. I'm glad (4) that she supports me. She gives me lots of encouragement. I hope (5) that I won't let her down!
Explain that in informal English, we can drop that in all these sentences, but keeping it makes the writing more formal and clear.
Step 6 Summary and Homework
Summarize the key points of this class:
Connecting words and phrases: both...and..., not only...but (also)..., either...or..., neither...nor..., except, as well as. Pay attention to the subject-verb agreement rules, especially the proximity principle for neither...nor... and either...or....
Object clauses introduced by that: used after verbs (hope, think, believe) and adjectives (sure, glad, certain). That can be dropped in informal English.
Key structures: Subject + verb/adj. + that + clause.
Assign homework:
Write 3 sentences using neither...nor..., not only...but also..., and both...and... respectively.
Write 5 sentences about your future plans using object clauses introduced by that.

和as well as的区别、not only...but (also)...
