Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English writer. She started writing at a young age and finished six novels in her life. Today, her books are more popular than ever. In the past 10 years, five of her six novels have been made into Hollywood films, and her books are still best-sellers.
Richard Jenkyns, an English professor from Oxford University, says Austen's novels are about marriage, friendship and family. These topics are still close to our daily life today. "Her stories are timeless," Jenkyns says.

The Old Man and the Sea is the most inspiring book I have ever read. Written by the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway, it tells a simple but powerful story that has encouraged millions of readers.
The story is about an old fisherman named Santiago. For 84 days, he caught nothing and was considered unlucky by other fishermen. But he never lost heart. On the 85th day, he went far out to sea and finally caught a huge marlin(枪鱼). The fish was so strong that it pulled his small boat for three whole days. During those days, the old man suffered from hunger, pain and tiredness, but he never gave up fighting. Although he only brought back the fish skeleton(鱼骨架) in the end, he won the respect of everyone around him.
I first read this book when I was in Grade Eight. At that time, I failed my English exam several times and almost decided to give up. I felt upset and doubted my own ability. Then my English teacher gave me this book and asked me to read it carefully. After finishing the story, I was deeply moved by the old man’s strong will. I realized that failure is not the worst thing — giving up is.
From then on, I kept practicing English every day. I spent more time remembering words and reading passages. Little by little, my English improved a lot. This book taught me that as long as we keep trying and never give up, we can get through any difficulty in life. It will always be there to cheer me up whenever I face challenges in the future.
