In the middle of busy New York City, a little bird has become the latest feel-good star at Bryant Park. Amazingly, it has slowed down the rushing New Yorkers and brought them together.
This small and round bird is called the American Woodcock. It is drawing people’s attention with its special “dance”. When it walks, its body rocks back and forth (来回地), as if it is dancing to music only itself can hear. Many scientists guess this special movement can create small shakes in the soil, making earthworms (蚯蚓) move closer to the surface. Then it’s easy for the woodcock to pull them out with its long and strong beak (喙). At the same time, it may also be a warning to possible enemies.
Every day, many New Yorkers slow down to watch it right after work. They pull up chairs, take photos, or even copy its dance moves, while many others simply stand and smile — something that doesn’t always happen in a busy city like New York. People are happy to see the little bird after a long day, and it’s always relaxing to watch it dance. One visitor shared, “We just met and became friends when watching the bird.” Because of this little bird, strangers make friends.
In fact, the woodcock doesn’t appear in the city by chance. It is on its spring migration (迁徙) north. And Bryant Park is a good place for it to rest, eat earthworms and save energy.
More than just a cute visitor, this little bird has given New York, a fast and busy city, a valuable gift. It gives people a simple reason to stop hurrying, connect with others, and enjoy the beautiful moment in life.

Inner painting, a traditional Chinese art, is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Artists create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle with special brushes, which need to be thin enough to enter the tiny bottles.
These miniature masterpieces (微型杰作) often carry deep cultural meanings. The designs on the painting stand for people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most popular ones are landscapes, followed by flowers and birds.
Creating an inner painting requires great skills. Artists must work through the bottle’s narrow neck and carefully paint inside in a reverse order. They start with foreground (前景) details before adding backgrounds, opposite to the usual way of painting. In this way, the final artwork looks proper and correct when it is seen from the outside. Inner painting also needs high carefulness and patience. Any mistake means a complete restart. “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking,” an inner painting artist says. Most artists need years of training before creating great and fine pieces. They usually spend 2-3 years just practicing drawing basic lines.
Though inner painting has its cultural value and unique beauty, it still faces difficulties such as low interest among young people, limited market needs and fewer learners. Luckily, artists are trying to make it closer to our life. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets. A new type of brush has been invented to improve drawing speed. Young artists even make use of social media to spread their painting skills. Li Mei, for example, showed inner painting skills on social media and successfully attracted over 500,000 followers. “We hope it can be respected as a heritage but still alive in daily life,” Li explains. They also expect inner painting courses to be offered at school for young people to take in the near future.
34. What kind of brush is used for inner painting
A. Brushes made of glass. B. Thick and short brushes.
C. Quite thin brushes. D. Brushes with sharp ends.
35. Which of the following themes might be the most popular design for inner painting
A. Living animals. B. Natural scenery.
C. Famous people. D. Historical events.
36. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 3
A. happening over and over B. developing step by step
C. difficult to understand D. going the opposite way
37. What can we infer from the sentence “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking”
A. Other tools and special materials are needed for inner painting.
B. Artists need to work together as a team to finish the perfect artwork.
C. Inner painting is such a difficult task that it needs skills and patience.
D. It is very dangerous for the artists to take up inner painting.
38. What is the main idea of the passage
A. To explain technical steps of creating the inner painting.
B. To show the value and challenges of a traditional art.
C. To compare different Chinese intangible cultural heritages.
D. To call on us to save the traditional Chinese art together.

With the holiday season coming, many children are dreaming of the latest toys. This year, artificial intelligence (AI) toys that can talk and learn are becoming popular gifts. However, a new report asks an important question: Are these smart toys safe for kids
Teresa Murray, who is one of the report writers, says some of these AI toys may talk about a lot of topics that some parents might find worrying. It could be how to find dangerous objects in the home, such as matches and knives, and how to light those matches. It could be about what happened to people who died. And it could be topics that some parents may not be comfortable with their kids hearing about.
The problems don’t stop there. The report also shows that these toys are listening and collecting information. They can record a child’s voice, ask for their names and their dates of birth, and even talk about the kid’s likes, dislikes, favorite toys, and favorite friends. “The one toy that we looked at has facial recognition software, and because it’s connected to the Internet, anything is available (可获得的). Who knows what those toys might start talking to your children about ” says Teresa Murray, “It’s really terrible.”
Murray points out that this is different from smartphones. On phones, parents can use parental controls to block (屏蔽) what they consider harmful. However, when you hand an AI toy to a child, you can’t control what it gets from the Internet. Because the toys are online, kids could see almost anything on the web.
If a child wants an AI toy for a gift, what should a parent do Murray suggests that families make the decision themselves, but be careful. If you buy one, you should first test the toy for at least an hour. Try to ask the questions a child might ask, because safety systems can sometimes fail after a few minutes. Parents must know that these toys are able to collect almost all private information before deciding if the risk is worth the hugs.
39. According to the report, what may parents worry about AI toys
A. If they are safe for kids to use.
B. If they are popular with kids.
C. If they are expensive for families.
D. If they are fun for kids to play with.
40. How does the writer show the possible risks of AI toys in paragraph 2
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By comparing numbers.
41. What can some AI toys record
A. Pets’ toys. B. Teachers’ names.
C. Parents’ birthdays. D. Children’s voices.
42. According to the last paragraph, what should parents do if they want to buy an AI toy
A. Buy the latest model to keep the children safe.
B. Avoid buying any toy that connects to the Internet.
C. Test the toy themselves first and understand the risks.
D. Let the child decide freely since the toys are educational.
43. Which word can best express the writer’s feeling towards AI toys
A. Encouraged. B. Uninterested. C. Worried. D. Surprised.

①Every student at Riverwood School has a locker, but Mia’s locker is special. Not because of the stickers on the door or the bright blue paint inside — it is special because someone keeps leaving small surprises in it.
②The first gift appeared in September: a tiny paper star with a note, “Hope you smile today.” Mia looked around, but nobody acted differently. She thought it was a mistake and forgot about it.
③Two weeks later, she found a bookmark with a drawing of a cat. In October, she discovered a packet of hot chocolate. Each item was simple but thoughtful. Her friends joked that she had a “secret locker friend”. Mia liked the advice but still had no idea who he or she was.
④One rainy morning, Mia arrived at school feeling tired. When she opened her locker, she found a small card: “Rainy days can still be bright. Hang in there — things will get better soon.” There was also a tiny sunflower sticker. For some reason, these words warmed her heart more than the others.
⑤Mia started paying more attention. She noticed that every surprise appeared on days when she seemed stressed or quiet. Someone was watching — but kindly, not in a strange way.
⑥Before the winter holidays, Mia decided to leave a note inside her locker door: “To my secret friend, ________.”
⑦After the break, she found a final note waiting for her: “You’re welcome. Sometimes people need a little light.”
