For two years, sorrow made her body feel like a pressure-cooker. “It wasn’t until my junior year that I discovered something that really helped with the release of my emotions,” said Brooke Stanford, who lost her mother, Andrea, to pancreatic cancer two weeks before arriving on campus as a freshman of Boston College. “The one thing that really helped was running.”
Now Stanford is using the sport to honor her mother and lift other families facing the disease. She’s been training for this year’s Boston Marathon while requesting donations for Project Purple, a nonprofit devoted to fighting pancreatic cancer and supporting patients. Every year, the Boston Athletic Association partners with a set of charities, which in turn call for marathoners to raise money ahead of the race day.
Stanford won’t be the only college runner hitting the 26.2-mile course for a loved one on April 21. Each of these students is competing for a strong finish and a substantial collection for a cause close to the heart.
Stanford discovered Project Purple last summer while going through a list of approved charities for the marathon. “I knew I would want to run for some sort of cancer research organization, but I didn’t think that there would be one so fitting because of what I had been through,” she said. “After that, I made it my No. 1 mission to get a spot on the Project Purple team. I spent much longer doing than that on any assignment Harvard has ever given me.”
The first-time marathoner has continued giving it her all. She achieved her $50,000 goal two months ago and currently ranks among the Top 10 of Boston Marathon fundraisers this year. According to Kampf, she also ranks among Project Purple’s most successful charity runners ever.
“I was just so excited that I got to do this—and do it for my mom. In some ways, I feel like I’ve found my life’s purpose,” Stanford said. “I want to work more with Project Purple. I want to make a difference. I want to help end pancreatic cancer.”
24. What drove Stanford to start running
A. The unbearable sadness.
B. The academic pressure.
C. The aim to improve physical health.
D. The desire to meet her mother’s expectations.
25. Why did Stanford choose to support Project Purple
A. It offered the highest fundraising rewards.
B. Its training programs were the most professional.
C. Its goals closely matched her personal experience.
D. It was recommended by the Boston Athletic Association.
26. What does Stanford’s current fundraising achievement demonstrate
A. The popularity of charity marathon runs.
B. Her remarkable commitment to the cause.
C. The necessity of setting donation targets.
D. Her devotion to publicizing Project Purple.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Stanford
A. Talented and humble.
B. Sympathetic and determined.
C. Competitive and disciplined.
D. Ambitious and humorous.

A newly developed system combining AI and robotics has been helping a man with tetraplegia (四肢瘫痪) turn his thoughts into mechanical arm movements—including holding and releasing objects—with the system working for seven months without readjustment. That’s way beyond the handful of days that these setups typically last for many before they have to be adjusted—which shows the promise and potential of the tech, according to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) research team.
Crucial to the brain-computer interface (BCI) system are the AI algorithms(算法) used to match specific brain signals to specific movements. The man is able to watch the robotic movements in real time while imagining them, and achieve greater accuracy with the arm actions, because if anything goes against his original intentions, he can rectify it in time.
“This combination of learning between humans and AI is the next phase for these brain-computer interfaces,” says neurologist Karunesh Ganguly, from UCSF. “It’s what we need to achieve complicated, life-like functions.”
Guiding the robotic arm through thoughts alone, the man could open a cupboard, take out a cup, and place it under a water fountain. The tech has great potential to support people with disability in a wide variety of actions.
Among the discoveries made during the course of the research, the team found that the shape of the brain patterns related to movement stayed the same, but their location changed slightly over time—something that’s thought to happen as the brain learns and takes on new information. The AI was able to address this change thanks to the algorithms, which meant the system didn’t need frequent adjustment. What’s more, the researchers are confident that the speed and the accuracy of the setup can be improved over time.
Notably, the system functioned entirely through willpower alone, with no machine assistance. The system has given voice to someone who can no longer speak and helped a man with tetraplegia play games of chess. While there’s still a lot more work to do, as the technology keeps on improving, more complex actions will become possible.
28. What does the underlined word “rectify” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Correct. B. Ignore. C. Repeat. D. Simplify.
29. What can we know about the BCI system
A. It needs external devices to interpret brain signals.
B. It requires users to verbally command the robotic arm.
C. It is currently limited to basic movements like holding objects.
D. It enables users to perform complex daily tasks independently.
30. How does the AI algorithm contribute to the BCI system’s effectiveness
A. By predicting errors in real-time robotic actions.
B. By enhancing the speed of robotic arm movements.
C. By adapting to slight changes in brain signal locations.
D. By fixing the location of brain patterns related to movement.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the BCI system’s future
A. Optimistic. B. Uncaring. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.

Scientists in Hawaii have discovered a new species of moth(蛾), and its caterpillar, the early stage in the development of moths, has an unusual lifestyle. It lives in spiders’ webs, eating insects it finds there. To protect itself from the spiders, the caterpillar covers itself with body parts from dead insects, earning it the name “bone collector caterpillar”.
Bone collector caterpillars belong to “fancy case” caterpillars, unique to Hawaii. While most in this group make silk cases or decorate them with nearby materials, bone collector caterpillars take it further—they carefully select and cut bits of dead insect bodies to cover their cases.
And they’re not just satisfied with any old part they find. Instead, they construct their cases by carefully choosing bits of insects and putting them inside to suit their need.
Why would a caterpillar decorate itself The answer is that they live in spider webs—a very dangerous place for an insect. Spider webs are great places to find food that the spiders don’t eat, but the bone collector caterpillars don’t want to become food themselves. By wrapping themselves with pieces of dead insects, they seem to fool the spiders into ignoring them. It’s a tough way to make a living, but it seems to work. Scientist Daniel Rubinoff said the first time he saw one, he just couldn’t believe it.
Bone collector caterpillars are extremely rare. Dr. Rubinoff first discovered one in 2008. Since then, just 62 of them have been found in all. The insects are only found in a small area on the side of a mountain on Hawaii’s Oahu Island. They mainly choose spider webs in trees or in holes in rocks.
However, spiders aren’t the only threats to caterpillars. Over time, invasive(入侵的) species have been taking over Hawaii’s natural forests. As the forests around them change, it could become harder for the caterpillars to survive. Luckily, the bone collector caterpillars seem to be able to manage, even in the webs of spiders that don’t originally come from Hawaii.
32. What distinguishes bone collector caterpillars from other “fancy case” caterpillars
A. They use dead insect parts for decoration.
B. They feed on spiders’ leftovers.
C. They live mainly in Hawaii’s forests.
D. They make silk cases for protection.
33. Why do bone collector caterpillars choose to live in spider webs
A. They rely on spiders to help find mates.
B. They lack the basic ability to build nests.
C. Spider webs provide easy access to food sources.
D. Spider webs protect them from invasive species.
34. What can be inferred about bone collector caterpillars from the last two paragraphs
A. Invasive species mean a great threat to their survival.
B. Scientists have fully understood their survival mechanism.
C. They have adjusted to spider webs beyond their original habitat.
D. Their population has experienced great ups and downs since 2008.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Fancy Case Caterpillars in Hawaii
B. Increasing Threats Facing Bone Collector Caterpillars
C. The Fight Between Spiders and Caterpillars in Hawaii
D. Rare Bone Collector Caterpillars Living in Spider Webs

As a father, I’ve always been proud of my daughter, who dreams of becoming a stage performer. Even as a child, she had a deep love for music. Whenever she got a chance, she would sing with her whole heart. Her voice was so captivating that it would draw anyone within range of hearing.
Living in an ordinary community, I’d multiply jobs to ensure I could give her whatever she needed. When Lily started school, her music teacher, Mrs. Taylor, noticed her talent and offered to instruct her. With dedication, Lily’s singing improved by leaps and bounds.
A year later, tragically struck. Lily was hit by a car while crossing the street, leaving her with a severe injury that the doctors feared might prevent her from ever walking again. I was heartbroken, feeling as though I had been thrown into complete darkness. As I stood on the edge of despair, Mrs. Taylor arrived. Her presence was like a flash of hope. She comforted me, saying finally, “Lily needs your strength now more than ever.” I nodded, steeling myself, and together we went to see Lily in the hospital.
Hearing the noise of us entering the room, Lily opened her eyes slowly. I stepped forward, held her hand and whispered. “My dear, everything will be okay.” Mrs. Taylor added gently, “You’re a strong girl, Lily. We’re here for you.” Tears streamed down Lily’s face as she realized her situation.
After two months, Lily was discharged from the hospital. Her friends and teachers came to visit her regularly, providing her with continuous encouragement. Lily came to accept her new reality, living a life in a wheelchair. She never mentioned her singing dreams again, and I understood her silence: She didn’t want to cause us more pain.
Then, one day, Mrs. Johnson brought unexpected news. She told Lily that the annual school talent show was approaching, and her classmates wanted her to perform. “Really ” Lily asked, her eyes lighting up with a spark of hope before she shook her head, with great doubt about herself.

书面表达第一节范文
A Memorable Science Museum Trip
Last week our school organized a study trip to the local science museum. We visited high-tech exhibition halls about AI, space and new energy. We operated simple robot models and watched popular science videos together. Guides explained how technology changes our daily life patiently.
This trip impressed me deeply. I realized science is not far away from us. It brings convenience and progress to society. I decide to study science harder and create useful inventions in the future.
书面表达第二节续写范文
“I don’t think I can do it,” Lily said softly. Mrs. Taylor sat beside her and told her voice was still amazing and the wheelchair would never stop her dream. All her classmates cheered for her, telling her they would stand beside her all the time. Deeply moved, Lily made up her mind to take part in the show. She practiced singing every day after school, ignoring the pain from her injured leg. She poured all her love and feelings into every note.
When Lily’s song ended, everyone present clapped their hands wildly. Warm applause filled the whole hall for a long time. Lily sat in her wheelchair with tears rolling down her cheeks, feeling proud of herself. She realized disability couldn’t kill her passion for music. From then on, she never gave up her dream and kept singing, bringing warmth and courage to everyone around her.
