something “Amateurish” (业余的) hasn’t always been a 43 term, explains the author and
activist Karen Walrond. “It comes from the Latin, meaning ‘one who loves’.” Her new book In
Defense of Dabbling explains “intentional amateurism”: finding an activity we’re 44 to
but not necessarily naturally good at, and sticking with it anyway.
There are two reasons to 45 intentional amateurism. First, it goes against “hustle
culture” and the expectation that we should always be 46 or focus on self-improvement.
Teaching yourself to arrange flowers, for instance, is something you might do simply for
47 . Second, even though you might never improve, you’ll inevitably experience benefits,
which can flow into your daily life. As Walrond says, she has always thought meditation difficult,
but finds mindfulness when 48 fully in activities she enjoys.
Mindfulness is among seven 49 by which Walrond defines intentional amateurism,
along with curiosity, self-compassion, patience, kindness, honesty, and creativity. Focusing on

As a New York State Byway, Lakes to Locks Passage connects Lake Champlain, Lake
George, Champlain Canal and the Upper Hudson River. Visitors can explore 225 miles of historic
and recreational sites, including 32 “Waypoint Communities” offering walking, biking, and
driving tours. Each town offers unique historical and regional activities, including sunken ships,
ancient lock systems, battlefields, and 1800s daily life examples. Golfing and boating are also
popular along the route.

The Ride of a Lifetime — ZXMoto (张雪机车)
In March 2026, the-World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portim o, Portugal,
witnessed a historic moment. A relatively new Chinese brand, Zhangxue Motorcycles, won the
championship — the first time a Chinese motorcycle manufacturer had claimed victory in this
top-tier international racing event. The winning margin was nearly four seconds, a remarkable lead
in a sport where races are often decided by milliseconds.
Behind this victory stands Zhang Xue, the brand’s founder. Born in 1987 into a poor family
高二英语试卷 第 6 页(共 12页)
in a remote mountain village in Hunan Province, Zhang grew up in a leaky mud-brick house. At
14, he rode a motorcycle for the first time and immediately knew he would never leave it. Soon
after, he dropped out of school and became an apprentice at a repair shop. There, he started with
the most basic tasks — cleaning parts, then disassembling and rebuilding engines. By age 20, he
could assemble a complete engine from a pile of parts, even blindfolded.
However, Zhang quickly realized that becoming a top racer was not a realistic goal. Injuries,
lack of funds, and fierce competition blocked his path. So he made a decisive shift: “If I can’t ride
the fastest bike, then I’ll build the fastest.” In 2013, he moved to Chongqing, China’s “Motorcycle
Capital”, with only 20,000 yuan. The city’s highly integrated industrial chain — where all
necessary parts can be sourced within 40 kilometers — allowed Zhang to efficiently turn his vision
into reality. Today, Chongqing is home to 51 motorcycle manufacturers and over 410 parts
suppliers.
Zhang founded Zhangxue Motorcycles in April 2024, focusing on high-performance
products and self-developed engines. The winning bike, the 820RR-RS, features a self-developed
819cc engine. Crucially, more than 90% of its parts are produced domestically, with the engine,
electronic controls, and frame achieving 100% Chinese autonomy.
“This victory means more than a win for one company,” Zhang said. “It will make our
entire industry more confident in what we’ve been pursuing. And perhaps more importantly,
people abroad may have to look at us with a new perspective.”
56.What can we learn about Zhang Xue’s early life
A.He received formal education in mechanical engineering.
B.He developed mechanical skills through hands-on experience.
C.His parents financially supported his racing dreams.
D.He started riding motorcycles at a very young age.
57.Why did Zhang Xue move to Chongqing in 2013
A.To receive better medical treatment for his injuries.
B.To benefit from the city’s well-developed industrial chain.
C.To compete in a major motorcycle racing event.
D.To find investment for his own motorcycle company.
58.What does the underlined word “integrated” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Complicated. B.Separated. C.Combined. D.Expensive.
59.According to Zhang Xue, what is the broader significance of his victory
A.It proves that Chinese products are cheaper than foreign ones.
B.It may change international perceptions of Chinese manufacturing.
高二英语试卷 第 7 页(共 12页)
C.It will encourage more young people to drop out of school.
D.It shows that European brands are no longer competitive.
60.Which of the following best describes Zhang Xue according to the passage
A.A talented racer who succeeded through natural ability.
B.A determined person who overcame difficulties to chase his dream.
C.A wealthy businessman who achieved success through investment.
D.A well-educated engineer who designed motorcycles in college.

At any bus stop or while waiting in line, most people will have their heads down scrolling
(滚屏) on their phones. But studies suggest if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead,
there could be some serious benefits.
We actually spend nearly half our waking time daydreaming, but it isn’t always pleasant. In
one study, people even preferred mild electric shocks to being alone with their thoughts. This
explains why we automatically reach for phones during downtime.
Social psychology professor Erin Westgate compares mindless scrolling to “brain candy”
— momentarily pleasurable but lacking in meaning. She adds many human achievements depend
largely on higher-order thinking. So next time you have a few minutes free, put away your phone
and let your mind wander.
Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often overblown. In a 2022 study, people
predicted they would hate 20 minutes alone doing nothing, yet afterward reported greater
enjoyment than expected. According to researcher Kou Murayama, the ability to mentally wander
— to reflect on past experiences and consider others’ viewpoints — is a distinctly human capacity
that boosts learning and helps understand others.
Mind-wandering is also key to problem-solving. People often find better solutions after
unfocused thinking than through intentional effort alone, especially during routine tasks like
driving or showering. Even when people are not actively thinking, their brains remain active in a
so-called default mode (默认模式), allowing ideas to connect in new ways. It’s especially helpful
for complex problems.
Beyond cognitive (认知的 ) benefits, daydreaming also boosts social and emotional
connections. A study found imagining pleasant interactions with loved ones made people feel
closer. Social daydreaming allows individuals to practice conversations, reflect on past
interactions, and prepare for future social situations. As psychologist Poerio says, our ability to
mentally “time travel” helps us better handle the social world. Murayama says he now tries to
resist checking his phone during short waits and let his thoughts wander. He finds simply
高二英语试卷 第 8 页(共 12页)
entertaining oneself mentally can be both satisfying and meaningful.
61.Why does Erin Westgate compare mindless scrolling to “brain candy”
A.It does harm to people’s health. B.It helps people to avoid boredom.
C.It replaces deep thinking in daily life. D.It brings quick but shallow enjoyment.
62.What does the 2022 study suggest
A.People easily get used to phone-free life. B.Daydreaming is often underestimated.
C.Being alone naturally promotes learning. D.Self-reflection is the cure for boredom.
63.What does the default mode suggest
A.Unfocused thinking fuels creativity. B.Intentional effort brings new ideas.
C.Complex tasks require active minds. D.Routines involve little brain activity.
64.What does Poerio mean by mental “time travel”
A.Recalling memories to escape the present.
B.Using imagined experiences to manage social life.
C.Predicting future events with emotional accuracy.
D.Keeping close relationships free from conflict.
65.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Maintain Focus in the Digital Age
B.Discover the Joy of Being Truly Alone
C.Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind
D.Explore the Benefits of Social Daydreaming

From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. We are immunized (免疫)
from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses
can now be cured by modern drugs and medical treatment. It is almost certain that one day cures
will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased
enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before,
every day we witness the unbelievable slaughter (屠杀) of men, women and children on the roads.
Man vs the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the
world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it
happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car
becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a
man's very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become
unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are ill-mannered and aggressive,
高二英语试卷 第 9 页(共 12页)
willful as two-year-old and absolutely selfish. All their hidden disappointments and regrets seem
to be brought by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles so kindly on the motorist and seems to forgive his
behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost impossible
to live in because of heavy tragic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is
ruined by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to
be conveniently forgotten.
It is high time a world system of laws were created to reduce this senseless waste of human
life. As for driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict
enough. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should
be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test
every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be
raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Even the
smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can affect a person's driving ability. Present drinking and
driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed
limits should be introduced on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications (规范)
for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA.All advertising stressing power and performance
should be banned. These measures may sound too severe. But surely nothing should be considered
as too severe if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human
beings, not motor-cars.
66.The main idea of this passage is ________.
A.Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists
B.Thousands of people the world over are killed each year
C.The laws of some countries about driving are not too strict
D.Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents
67.What does the author think of society toward motorists
A.Society laughs at the motorists.
B.Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.
C.Victims of accidents are nothing.
D.Society-forgives their rude driving.
68.Why does the author say: “his car becomes the extension of his personality ”
A.Driving can show his hidden self.
B.Driving can show the other part of his personality.
C.Driving can bring out his character.
高二英语试卷 第 10 页(共 12页)
D.His car can express his temper.
69.Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents
A.Build more highways.
B.Make stricter driving tests.
C.Test drivers every three years.
D.Raise age limit and lay down sweety specifications.
70.The attitude of the author towards driving and safety rules is ________.
A.indifferent B.critical C.appealing D.favorable

Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the
other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black pants and blue, teal, and gray
long-sleeve shirt day after day, Todd, a freshman at Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory
High School in Memphis, became the target of laughter. But there was little Todd could do. His
mother simply couldn’t afford to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids piling on were Antwan Garrett and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman
football players. But over time, they realized that their disparaging words felt like bullying and
seemed to be slowly crushing Todd’s spirit. Something finally clicked.
“I felt like I needed to do something,” Graham told CBS News. So he and Garrett hatched a
plan. They went home and hunted through their own drawers and closets. The next day at school,
they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was
understandably nervous about being called out by the larger boys.
“He wasn’t smiling or anything, and I was like, ‘I think this is going to make you smile,’ ”
Graham says. “I told him, ‘We’re in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you, and
I want to give something to you to make it up.’ ” He then handed Todd a bag. Inside were
cleanshirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.
Todd was blown away. “I was very happy,” he told WATN-TV. “Shocked, completely.”
And Todd got much more than a new wardrobe. He no longer sits alone at lunch. Now he
eats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.
“I’ve been bullied my entire life,” Todd told CBS News. Reflecting on the day Garrett and
Graham called him into the hall, he called it “the best day of my entire life, basically.”
