I still remember the morning I set off for my first day back at university at 42. With a schoolbag on my back and a carefully packed lunch, I found myself wondering whether I would stand out for all the wrong reasons. Beneath the nervous excitement, however, was a deeper concern: Never will my guards be down for the future!
Across the UK, this feeling is becoming commonplace. More and more adults are returning to education, in search of stable work, meaningful or simply sustainable. Rapid changes in technology, combined with economic uncertainty, have made many career paths less reliable than they once were. The game is not in the bag for many.
After two decades spent working towards seniority in the creative industries, it was kind of discouraging to find myself applying for roles far below my experience and pay grade. Mika Sipponen, a materials chemist from a European University, went for a swim in a lake. Afterwards, he noticed his hair felt smooth without any hair product. The brownish water was rich in plant matter, leading him to wonder if lignin, which is found in wood — could help condition hair.
His team mixed lignin with coconut oil, and it worked. Experiments showed that the mixture smoothed hair and reduced the force that it took to drag a comb through it. Since lignin can be sourced from wood waste, hair products made from it would be more environmentally friendly than those made with standard petrochemical-based ingredients.
Their research is just one recent example of efforts to “green” hair care products, many of which have ingredients from non-renewable petrochemicals or that don’t degrade in the environment. A growing number of consumers want products that have a smaller environmental footprint and are made from ingredients they perceive as being milder on the body. “Consumer awareness and pressure have made a real impact on the hair care market,” says Alexa Friedman, an epidemiologist from an environmental research organization.
Effective hair care relies on surface chemistry. Healthy hair has a thin oily layer, while damaged hair has rough scales. Many conditioners use positively charged polymers to stick to damaged hair, but these often come from non-renewable petrochemicals and may build up in the environment. Lignin offers a natural alternative. Scientists have modified lignin to make it positively charged and water-soluble. The approach doesn’t entirely avoid petrochemicals, which are the source of the chemical modifier for lignin, but it’s a good step.
Still, Friedman cautions that it’s hard to know how green a product is because there is little accountability for claims. And even bio-based materials from renewable sources may still harm the environment. Yet even though consumers seek greener alternatives, the most important criterion for them is still whether a product works. “The first thing is performance,” Mika Sipponen says, “That’s what people look for.” Scientists, in those dirty ponds, and forests, are looking too.

Since late 2022, more netizens have started using large language models, a popular type of AI tool, which have skyrocketed, to access knowledge.
It is no brainer that their appeal is obvious: Ask a question, get a polished synthesis (合成品), and move on—it feels like effortless learning. New research, in contrast, indicates this ease may have a cost. Just as a leading figure in the field of large language models uttered, no revolution comes without a price.
A series of studies revealed that people using such AI tools to research a topic develop shallower knowledge compared to those using a standard web search engine. In the experiments, participants were asked to learn about something and were randomly assigned to do so by using either an LLM or the “old-fashioned way”. Afterwards, they were asked to write advice to a friend on the topic based on what they learned.
The data revealed a consistent pattern: People who learned about a topic through an LLM versus web search felt that they learned less, invested less effort in writing their advice, which ultimately was shorter and less factual. Some independent readers who did not know how it was produced, when rating this advice, found it to be less informative and less helpful, and consequently they were less likely to adopt it.
Why so There is an old saying that goes, it is hard to read the label when you are inside the jar. Few know why this happens. A core principle of learning is that people learn best when they are actively engaged. With a common web search, you must evaluate search results, click links, and synthesize information from different sources. This active process strengthens understanding. Getting a ready-made synthesis from an AI, on the other hand, requires less cognitive struggle, which can lead to a more superficial grasp of the topic.
However, to be clear, we do not believe the solution to these issues is to avoid using LLMs, especially given the undeniable benefits they offer in many contexts. Rather, our message is that people simply need to become smarter or more strategic users of LLMs.
