In a remote village in Hebei Province, Pang Zhongwang was raised in unbearable hardship. His father suffered from a severe disease and couldn’t work after an accident, while his mother was paralyzed waist down and unable to take care of him. Despite their own poor health, his elderly grandparents struggled desperately to keep the family together.

Publishers have been warned that “the website is dying” as the medium struggles to meet audience expectations while competing with new digital types. The findings came from Enders Analysis, a research company, which said the drop in click-throughs was caused by a large amount of competing content from social media platforms and AI summaries produced by search engines.
Unlike 10 years ago, when search engines brought visitors to websites, generative AI now allows people to get their questions answered directly on the search page — no need to click on a website. A survey of more than 1,100 US consumers by Bain & Company found that 80 percent use these “zero-click” results for at least 40 percent of their searches.
Social media platforms also play a major role. Many people now learn about new brands, products, services and experiences through pictures and videos on these platforms instead of clicking on websites. While some would argue that being able to find an answer quickly from multiple sources without clicking through several sites is easier and more convenient, there are obvious problems with this.
“Publishers are losing visibility and value as their content is used but not rewarded,” said Douglas McCabe, a media analyst, in the Rewriting the Media Playbook report. The biggest problem, noted TechSpot, is that no one will want to create new content if they are paid nothing or almost nothing for it. This is especially true for small, independent websites that AI companies may not want to work with.
“AI is going to completely change the business model of the web,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince told TechSpot, a website that shares news and analysis on technology. He pointed out that the value exchange between search engines and content creators is disappearing. He added that since his company is at the center of this issue, they are trying to find ways to address it — hopefully before it’s too late.

Their innovative approach, published in Matter, shows that by strategically placing holes of a specific size and shape in particular locations, it’s possible to turn a battery pouch — traditionally only slightly flexible — into one capable of stretching significantly or even folding 180 degrees without compromising performance. This is part of a broader effort to integrate electronics more smoothly into everyday life, particularly through wearable technology.
Traditionally, pouch batteries used in various electronic devices are somewhat flexible but are typically limited in how far they can bend or stretch. Previous researchers have experimented with creating holes in the battery material, using round or square cuts in different configurations (布局), but the results were often unsatisfactory or came at the cost of the battery’s capacity.
The new research goes further. Instead of random holes, the team strategically cut rectangular holes in the battery material, which are in both longer and shorter shapes, helping maintain the structural integrity of the battery while allowing for more stretchability. The placement and dimensions of these holes were carefully selected after testing how they impacted the flexibility and stretching properties of the battery.
The researchers discovered that this particular arrangement of holes significantly enhanced the stretchability of the battery. The battery design was capable of withstanding stretches of up to 10% of its original length. Furthermore, the battery maintained its ability to hold a charge even when folded 180 degrees, an achievement that was previously difficult to achieve without damaging the device.
Additionally, the researchers found that the battery design was not only more breathable than traditional batteries but also twice as breathable as cotton. This is a critical factor for wearables, particularly in clothing, as it ensures that the device remains comfortable to wear, even for extended periods.
With this new battery design, the possibilities for wearable electronics are significantly expanded. The new flexible battery could also be a game-changer for other applications beyond clothing.
