Chinese classics are not only great for taking foreign friends’ Chinese to the next level, but also for giving them a good understanding of Chinese culture. As Chinese teenagers, it’s our duty to read and understand them deeply. Let’s take a look at five Chinese classics that are highly praised by sinologists (中国通) around the world.
The Analects《论语》
Recommended by Maxi (Argentina)
I came to fully understand and respect the wisdom of this book during my master’s studies in China. For me, the ideas of “ren”, “li”, and “xue” are key to understanding the ways of thinking and value systems in modern China. Also, the book has a big influence on my daily life, as I often use ideas from it in my speeches.
Laozi (Tao Te Ching)
Recommended by Misha (US) Three Hundred Tang Poems
Recommended by Saheli (India)
I began to read Laozi when I was 14 and was immediately drawn to it. Because of this, I began to study Laozi’s thoughts for many years after that. His idea of “the soft defeating the firm” has impressed me the most. It means that if you push others around and act rudely to control them, they will only dislike you more and more. True respect comes from understanding: you start to see things from others’ points of view as well. This book brings the finest poems together from the Tang Dynasty. It’s a shining example of the Chinese language: there’s a lot more to the few beautiful words than meets the eye, testing your imagination more than anything else. Of all the poems, Li Bai’s Thoughts on a Quiet Night (《静夜思》) attracts me the most. The simple actions get across a deep feeling of homesickness through a silent conversation with nature.
The Art of War《孙子兵法》
Recommended by Taras (Russia) Gems of Classical Chinese Prose《古文观止》
Recommended by Geoffrey (US)
I had read the original text of The Art of War before I went to China to study for a doctor’s degree. Sun Tzu’s military thought is a lot like that in the Tao Te Ching, as shown by the idea of “defeating the enemy without fighting”. For me, though, the book is also a guide to life that tells me how to deal with my own feelings with thought. This book is a collection of the most important articles from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. Though the pieces are short, they are elegant and rich in meaning. The book gives international readers a window into the Chinese literary tradition and introduces them to the depth of Chinese culture. My favourite essay is The Peach Blossom Spring.
24. According to Paragraph 1, what benefit can foreign friends get from Chinese classics
A.They can learn to write Chinese poems easily. B.They can become famous sinologists all over the world. C.They can improve their Chinese and learn Chinese culture well.
25. Who thinks Chinese classics can help him deal with his feelings better
A.Maxi. B.Taras. C.Saheli.
26. Which opinion can we NOT find in the passage
A.Maxi learns valuable ideas from The Analects.
B.Geoffrey thinks all essays in the book talk about war stories.
C.Taras thinks The Art of War has similar thoughts with Tao Te Ching.
27. We can use the wisdom from Tao Te Ching and The Art of War in our ______.
A.running and ball games B.speeches and writing only
C.daily life and making choices
28. What is the main purpose of the text
A.To compare different cultures around the world.
B.To encourage people to read more Chinese books.
C.To tell stories about five people who love Chinese culture.
D

Greenland, the world’s largest island, lies in the northeastern part of North America. The whole island covers an area of 2.166 million square kilometers. Though its name means “green land”, more than 84% of it is covered with thick ice. Two-thirds of the island is inside the Arctic Circle (北极圈), so it is freezing cold all year round. Summer brings 24-hour sunshine, while winter is almost completely dark.
Greenland’s natural environment is shaped by the freezing Arctic climate. There are some special animals that live in Greenland. Seals and whales can be found around the coasts of Greenland. Over time, some of their traditional lifestyles have changed, but fishing and hunting still remain important parts of their lives. Many local people keep using traditional tools and hunting skills. Dogsleds (狗拉雪橇) are still a common means of transportation here. Today, Greenland has also become a popular attraction for adventurous travelers. Seeing amazing ice sheets, going dog-sledding and visiting small Inuit villages are popular activities for visitors to experience local life.
Greenland is not only famous for its natural beauty and culture but also for its value. It plays an important role in researching the oceans, ice sheets, living things, especially climate change. Besides, it is full of natural resources, such as oil and rare earth minerals (稀土矿), which are very important for our planet.

Love Makes All the Difference
Love is everywhere in the world. But what does true love mean to us In my opinion, true love is not only the warm care from family, but also kindness we give to every person around us.
Last month, I joined a volunteer group to visit the old people’s home. I chatted with the lonely elders and helped them clean their rooms. When they smiled and thanked me, I deeply realized how powerful small love can be.
We can pass love in simple daily ways. We can help parents with housework at home, offer help to classmates in trouble at school, and take part in volunteer activities to serve society.
Little love from every person can warm the whole world. Let’s keep love in our hearts and pass it on every single day.
