On March 15, a serious wildfire suddenly swept across a large wild forest in Yajiang County, Sichuan Province. Luckily, no people lost their lives in this terrible accident. Wildfires are really dangerous natural disasters. They can spread very quickly and burn large areas of green trees and dry grass in a short time, bringing great harm to the natural environment.
① Wildfires happen very often in spring in China
In 2023, there were 328 wildfires across our country.147 of them broke out in March and April, making up almost half of the whole year’s wildfires. These fires not only damaged (损害) forests but also brought trouble to the lives of local people
② ▲
There is little rainfall in many places, especially in Southwest China, so the air and plants become very dry. Dry plants turn easy to catch fire when they start to grow and come back to life after winter. Besides, strong winds are quite usual in spring. They make wildfires spread much faster and more widely in the open air, making it harder to put out the fire.
③ Useful ways to protect yourself from wildfires
When you meet wildfires, stay calm first. It helps you make right and wise decisions and avoid making mistakes. Always stay upwind (上风向) of the fire to keep away from the smoke and flames (火焰). Move to safe places at once if the wind turns dangerous. If you are surrounded (包围) by fire, cover your body with wet clothes or a wet quilt and find places with water, like rivers or pools. Wide empty roads can also keep you away from the fire safely until help arrives.
16. What percent of wildfires in China happened in March and April in 2023
A.Almost 20%. B.Almost 50%. C.Almost 80%. D.Almost 90%.
17. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”.

18. Which of the following may cause spring wildfires

③dry air after winter ④cutting down trees
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④

Saturday was Millie’s favourite day of the week. That was the day she got to visit her grandparents’ farm. Millie loved to play there and help choose vegetables for lunch.
But there was one thing that Millie didn’t like—the henhouse. Millie always ran past it as fast as she could. The hens pecked at the ground with their sharp beaks. Their small, yellow eyes were always looking for food. Millie was afraid they would bite her.
After lunch one Saturday, Grandpa said, “Will you please help me feed the hens, Millie I’m busy today.”
Millie wanted to say no, but Grandpa had already handed her a bag of cracked corn. “This is their favourite snack,” he said with a smile.
Millie walked slowly to the henhouse. The hens rushed to the door as they saw her. They were excited about the food. Millie stood outside the henhouse and began to cry. She was too scared to open the door.
Grandpa heard Millie crying and came over. “What’s wrong ” he asked.
“I don’t want the hens to bite me!” Millie cried.
“Oh, Millie,” Grandpa laughed kindly. “Didn’t you hear the saying that something is as rare as hen’s teeth That means it almost never happens—because hens have no teeth at all! They can’t bite you even if they want to.”
Millie looked at the hens. Now they just seemed funny, not scary at all. She smiled and opened the door to feed them.

Do you wonder how smart your pet cat is, especially when it comes to remembering things A study gives us some surprising answers. Cats are not just clean and good at climbing—they are smart little animals with great memories!
Scientists wanted to know how well cats can remember things, so they did an experiment with 50 friendly house cats. These cats were of different ages, from cute baby cats to calm old cats, and they all loved tasty food.
In the experiment, the scientists put four bowls of the same type in a quiet room. Two bowls were full of the cats’ favourite snacks, and the other two were empty. Then the scientists let the cats into the room to eat. After they finished eating, the scientists took them out. Fifteen minutes later, the scientists changed all the bowls to clean, empty ones. Then the cats went back to the room to look for food. What happened next The cats spent much more time around the bowls that had food before! They smelt the bowls with their little noses and touched them with their paws.
This tells us cats can remember “what” and “where”. They seem to have good short-term memories. Another study in 2006, however, showed something quite different. Scientists tested cats’ ability to find hidden things. Most of the cats couldn’t find them after 30 seconds.
The study opens the door to new studies on how long cats’ memories can be. Professor Lauri from Yale University said, “We will keep studying how long cats’ memories last and if they remember many small things in life like humans do.”

A.By telling a story. B.By asking a question.

③They were house cats. ④They loved delicious food.

A.The reason why scientists studied cats’ memories.
B.The cats’ excellent senses of smell and touch.
C.The process of the cats’ memory experiment.
D.The results of the cats’ memory experiment.
29. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The scientists’ plan. B.The cats’ favourite food.
C.The experiment’s finding. D.The bowl with the most food.
30. What may Professor Lauri think about cats’ memories
A.Scientists already know a lot about them.
B.Scientists need to study more about them.

In early 2026, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management shared some information about natural disasters that happened in 2025. The main natural disasters included floods, earthquakes, typhoons, and hailstorms. Other natural disasters like snowstorms, wildfires, and sandstorms also happened in some areas.
The natural disasters caused great harm. They damaged houses, farmland, roads, power lines and more. They affected tens of millions of people across the country and even caused deaths. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes for safer places.
The natural disasters were terrible, but the government worked hard to protect people’s lives and property. After the disasters, it quickly got into reconstruction work. And it promised to improve warning systems, make river banks stronger, and call for greener development to reduce the risk of disasters.
According to some scientists, global warming is a possible cause of some natural disasters. As the global climate warms, extreme weather is becoming more and more common and powerful. Warmer oceans can create stronger typhoons, and changing weather patterns can bring heavy rain to inland areas that are not well-prepared for such conditions. This means more areas are facing unexpected dangers from bad weather.
Although we can’t stop natural disasters, we can reduce their damage through science, planning, and working together. Let’s act now!
