Shells, coins and paper money are money in different forms. Some types of money are still being used for trading today.
Seashells People think the first form of money was seashells. Shells were used about 3,000 years ago in some East Asian countries, like China and some countries in Africa. Shells were considered a good choice because they were easy to carry, similar in size and lasted a long time.
Coins Then, people developed skills for making metal things, and metal coins appeared. Metal coins were made of bronze (青铜), iron, gold or silver. The earliest metal coins were gold coins from Lydia. They were used about 600BC. Coins had different shapes. For example, in ancient China, people had daobi (knife coins), fangkongqian (round coins with a square hole in the center), etc.
Paper money The first known paper money appeared in China during the Song Dynasty, which was called jiaozi. The paper was a promise to pay a certain amount of money. Six centuries later (in the 1600s), banks in Europe started to give out paper money. Paper money became common in almost all currencies, and it is still widely used.
Digital money These days, people are used to paying for things electronically (用电子方法). Now, many countries are developing digital currencies. Money is used in a new form.

Do you know the Torch Festival (火把节) It is celebrated by the Yi people every year. It is usually from the 24th day to the 26th day of the sixth lunar month. Yi people light torches to show their respect for the fire.
The early Yi people lived in high and cold places in the mountains. They used fire for light, to stay warm, and to cook food. As one of the Yi people’s old sayings goes, “Everything you eat must ‘see’ fire.” In the old days, people lit a small fire outside the door before they took animal meat into their homes. They put the meat over the fire. It’s said that it could drive bad luck away. People also used fire to light leaves on the land to make them rich.
The celebration of the Torch Festival lasts for 3 days. The first day is called Duzai, which means “welcome the fire” in the Yi language. On this day, young people get together for different types of activities, such as horseback riding, bullfighting, wrestling and girls’ singing and dancing. The second day, called Duge which means “celebrate the fire”, is the climax (高潮) of the festival. The last day is called Dusha, which means “seeing off (送别) the fire”. When night falls, everyone holds a small torch and stands around a big torch, waiting for the fire to be lit.

My Favorite Book
My favorite book is Pippi Longstocking. It was written by Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren.
The story tells about a special girl Pippi. She is an orphan who lives alone. She is strong, independent and never follows boring rules. She lives happily with a horse and a monkey. She can cook, clean and even lift her horse easily.
I want to share it because Pippi teaches me to be brave and be myself. We don’t need to change to fit others. True friendship is built on respect. The interesting stories always bring me joy and courage. I hope more students can read this wonderful book.
