I rarely let it slip that I still pack my teen daughters’ lunches. If other parents find out, their eyebrows (眉毛) usually shoot up. I don’t try to explain my lunch lady routine. I’m in my late 40s — I’m letting go of the need to justify my choices.
My daughters have a lot on their plates: intense academics, part-time jobs, competitive sports, and social lives. Though I am busy too, I am efficient in the kitchen and can prepare a balanced lunch in half the time they can. More importantly, I can’t bear the thought of them rushing out with just a chocolate bar and an apple — that’s a snack, not a meal. I have packed over 4,120 lunches and counting.
But efficiency is not the real reason. What I’m really trying to do is capitalize on the time they’re under my roof. My potential to influence their life choices is already declining sharply and will almost disappear for my eldest next year when she moves out to attend university. Since I still have a chance to model healthy eating and a positive relationship with food, I’m determined to do so.
What I read about eating disorders in North American youth being on the rise is reflected in the messages shared by my daughters. I pay close attention when I hear them complaining about their body parts or commenting on friends who skip meals. Social media and narrow beauty standards are everywhere. It feels like a lot to compete with.
As a mother of athletes, I know that eating intentionally — ensuring they get enough protein, calcium (钙), and carbohydrates (碳水化合物) — is essential for their physical and mental well-being. While I know that a thoughtfully filled lunch bag isn’t going to erase feelings of worry or loneliness that have accompanied some of my girls’ school days, it might remind them that they’re loved and supported at home. Besides, the comfort provided by a small treat shouldn’t be underestimated.
By packing their school lunches, I keep my messaging consistent — we don’t skip meals. We need nutritious foods so we can learn and participate in our sports. We listen when our bodies tell us we’re hungry and also when we’re tired, lightheaded or unfocused. So until my girls throw their graduation caps in the air, I will continue cutting carrots and baking banana bread and preparing snack packs. Before I shut their cooler bags, I’ll also keep adding a dash of hope. Hope that, by doing this, they’ll learn, consciously or subconsciously, how their brains and bodies feel when they feed them regularly, with care.
Going forward, I’ll probably still avoid mentioning my lunch-making routine to other parents-but I know why it matters.
56. The author’s attitude toward other parents’ reaction in Paragraph 1 suggests ______.
A. a slight need to justify her behavior

D. a sudden realization of her daughters’ needs
57. What does the underlined word “capitalize on” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. gain control over

A. focuses mainly on athletes’ physical needs.
B. provides care beyond basic nutrition.
C. helps relieve teenagers’ worries and upset from school.
D. erases tension between mother and daughters.
59. The purpose of the author’s consistent messaging is intended to ______.
A. assist her daughters in competitive sports.
B. strengthen healthy attitudes toward food and the body.

60. What is the main idea of the passage

Think about your habits with dogs. Do you send them to daycare, dress them up, and bring them on vacations Do you talk to them like a baby If so, you’re not alone: research suggests our brains respond in the same way to pet dogs as they do to human children.
Our brains were not always tuned this way. As we domesticated dogs, they evolved human-like social and cognitive abilities. They came to act and even look like babies, and we began to see them as such. Zachary Silver, director of the Animal Cognition Lab at Occidental College, isn’t surprised: over thousands of years, people selected dogs for kindness, affection, and attentiveness to human signals.
Evolutionary time explains present feelings. Alison LaCoss, a mother of three, felt an overwhelming desire to love them and protect her newborns — and later Shio and Babka, the dogs she adopted. A 2014 brain-imaging study of mothers viewing photos of their children and their dogs found significant overlap (重叠): the amygdala (杏仁体) lit up, as did regions for reward, memory, social cognition, and facial processing. The women also reported similar pleasantness and excitement when looking at pictures of kids and dogs.
Important differences remain. Certain midbrain regions responded more strongly to children, indicating the brain still recognizes species boundaries. LaCoss admits she does feel distinctly proud watching her kids reach milestones dogs never will, yet her desire to meet Shio and Babka’s needs is just as intense. Silver argues that because dogs reliably generate these responses, the relationship for many people now equals the importance of a biological relative.
Neurochemistry deepens the connection. Behaviors such as eye contact, play, and physical affection increase oxytocin (催产素) levels, which in turn reinforces the very behaviors that strengthen the bond. As one paper states dogs have “hijacked” the human caregiving pathway: when a dog gazes with “puppy eyes” or runs over when called, oxytocin rises, activating the caregiving system that evolved to protect babies and motivating us to nurture, comfort, and guard our companions.
Domestication also shaped appearances and skills. Humans favored dogs that tracked our gaze, cooperated, and signaled with expressive faces. Modern dogs have rounder heads, larger eyes, and eyebrow muscles that create sadness, curiosity, and joy — features humans find irresistible. They play like kids, think like toddlers, and appear vulnerable, inviting care. You don’t need a scan to feel the bond is parental; for many, dogs are family. As LaCoss says, “My home isn’t home without them.”
61. Why does Zachary Silver consider dogs’ evolution unsurprising
A. Dogs naturally developed speech comprehension.
B. Human selection enhanced dogs’ social abilities.
C. Wolves transformed into companion animals.
D. Biological evolution increased dogs’ intelligence.
62. The author cited the 2014 brain-imaging study in paragraph 3 to ______.
A. contrast neural responses to children and dogs
B. provide evidence for a shared caregiving system
C. explain why dogs are better companions than other pets
D. demonstrate the uniqueness of parental instincts
63. According to the passage, what is a key neurological difference in how humans respond to children and dogs
A. Dogs lead to stronger reward system activity.
B. Dogs produce weaker emotional brain responses.
C. Children cause a stronger midbrain response.
D. Children activate the amygdala more weakly.
64. What does the phrase “have hijacked the human caregiving pathway” suggest about dogs
A. They have taken over human parenting duties.
B. They have evolved to replace human children.
C. They have influenced people through emotional signals.
D. They have aroused humans’ natural nurturing responses.
65. By saying “My home isn’t home without them,” LaCoss aims to ______.
A. highlight dogs’ irreplaceable emotional role
B. describe dogs as bridges to family bonds
C. reveal dogs’ capacity to find real sympathy
D. prove the necessity of keeping pets in families
第II卷 非选择题(满分30分)
第一节:根据句意,完成句子(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I was in a shopping mall recently, so I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an older gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch stretched out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather evident that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life.
There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. Then the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the older gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the girl except her tip. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Subsequently, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the older man in need of some attention. I only wish I had a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was pondering this event later on, I wondered to myself why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I suspect that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this older man as well. Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we encounter someone like this older gentleman, in need of kindness and attention. Perhaps he’s just simply lazy and didn’t work hard enough in his life. Or he should have gone to school and made more of himself. But just maybe he needs a little helping hand. Thank God for this young man who inspired the others to goodness as well. Oh, by the way, the last words this young man told the server was, “There go I, but by the Grace of God.”
66. What did the writer notice about the older gentleman when going to the coffee shop (no more than 20 words)

Students’ Holiday Travel Choices
Recently our school carried out a survey about senior three students’ travel plans after the college entrance exam. The results are as follows.
51% of the students choose natural places as their travel destinations, ranking first. 30% prefer historic spots, while only 19% plan to visit foreign cities.
Many students are eager to get close to nature to relax after long-term study. Besides, historic sites attract people who are fond of traditional culture. However, trips abroad cost more money and time, so fewer students choose them.
As for me, I will choose natural scenery. I want to breathe fresh air and get fully relaxed to recover from busy school life.
