The first thing I can tell you about Thabo, my South Africa guide, was that he is the world’s worst driver. From the airport to the heart of the city, he did 100 km per hour, bypassing lorries, motorbikes and taxi-vans crowed with people. The second thing was that he knew everybody and everything about Cape Town. This was good for me.
On the first day, Thabo took me to the suburbs with unpronounceable names — ORanjezicht — from where you can watch the sun go down on Africa. The next day we went to Cape Flats, the run-down township where the buildings were made of cardboard and rusty (生锈的)iron. It was truly vast — nearly a million people live here, side by side. Skinny dogs slid out of the way as Thabo zoomed along roads of mud and rotting rubbish. Some people waved, others stared. Children ran barefoot by the car.
Later that night we walked around the busy Victoria, Cape Town’s most fashionable area. The contrast from the township could not be greater: the smells of cooking rose from the kitchens — Asian, French, Italian. The bars and restaurants were packed, and I soon found out why. Cape Town is a paradise for gourmets (美食家), seafood-lovers and people like me, who just like eating. We went into a charming little pubs, and Thabo told me I couln’t leave Cape Town without trying some Cape seafood, so I did. It’s delicious.
On my final morning, we spent an hour sitting outside a cafe. Then we were driving again, experiencing the diverse landscape — green valleys. It was a great way to say goodbye to a place I knew only too briefly. I promised myself, and Thabo, that I would be back.

Tracey’s husband told her, “If you build it, they will come.” So Tracey built a dance studio four years ago, and he was right.
Tracey built Revere Dance Studio in an old large church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It may seem like an odd place to run a dance studio, but this church was disability accessible and that’s just what Tracey was looking for. Tracey needed a new home for her wheelchair dance students after the studio that was hosting the classes closed.
Now Tracey has been teaching free dance classes to students in wheelchairs for over four years. This season, her class is made up of six boys and girls ranging in age from 6 to 11 who attend dance rehearsals (排练) twice a month. Tracey says these classes are about more than the dancing. “For any child to get out on stage is an accomplishment,” Tracey said. Tracey has always considered the students in her “Wonders on Wheels” class to be talented, but this week she got to share their talents with the world. On Sunday, the WOW class debuted (初次登台) a dance routine they’ve been working on since October.
Last October, one week before the dance class reunited for a new season, one of the WOW children, Katie, passed away unexpectedly. Her teammates were heartbroken. They decided to honor their friend by giving this season’s dance to her. Everyone knew how much Katie loved Celine Dion, so the group chose the song My Heart Will Go On for the dance routine.
The six WOW dancers, dressed in white, were surrounded by fourteen dancers dressed in black. These “shadows” are high school girls who volunteer to dance alongside the children in wheelchairs, helping them move across the dance floor. As the song came to an end, a huge round of applause erupted from the audience.
5. Why did Tracey build the dance studio in the church
A.It is free of charge.
B.It is near her home.
C.It’s easy for the disabled to use.
D.It is big enough to hold dancers.
6. What can best describe Tracey
A.Brave and determined.
B.Talented and strict.
C.Devoted and hopeful.
D.Generous and kind.
7. What could be the best title for the passage
A.Tracey and her Dancing Career
B.A Wonderful Dance Performance
C.Children in Wheelchairs Struggle in the Dance Studio
D.Children in Wheelchairs Realize Dancing Dreams

Psychologist Julian Rotter published an article in 1966, introducing one of the most significant concepts in psychology, LOC (locus of control) (控制点). It reflects how much we expect our own behavior to affect what happens to us—rather than luck, fate, chance, or powerful others. In Rotter’s LOC test, people were asked to choose between internal and external alternatives. For example, “Many of the unhappy things in people’s lives are partly due to bad luck.” or “People’s misfortunes result from the mistakes they make.”
But are we as internally controlled as we were in 1966 In February 2024, the college students of Stephen Nowicki, PhD took a test. The students’ average LOC score of 12. 86 was more external than the average of 8. 10 found by Rotter in 1966. In fact, his students scored more externally than the prisoners Rotter tested in 1966, who scored an average of 10.33.
How can we explain the trend toward greater externality found in the general population and especially in Generation Z One possibility is that greater externality may be a reflection of the way things are in the more complicated tech-driven world than they were in earlier times. Another more disconcerting possibility is that people in general could be underestimating the control available to them. We know that externality increases in response to disasters but the danger is that victims might remain external even though they are no longer helpless. This is especially noteworthy because individuals who do return to their original internality cope better than those who remain inappropriately external.
Plentiful evidence has shown that internality is associated with more positive outcomes in areas of our lives including academic achievement and satisfaction in social activities. We need our internality. Being internal means taking responsibility for one’s actions, persisting longer, delaying rewards, gathering relevant information, and resisting pressure. Just as Rotter said,“Active steps should be taken to turn around this troubling trend because if feelings of externality continued, we may be heading for a society where each person sits back, watching the world go by.”
8. Which statement reflects an internal locus of control in Rotter’s LOC test
A.Success is the result of hard work.
B.Sometimes I feel dizzy after a shower.
C.Being famous is what everyone goes after.
D.I will feel relieved when my problems are solved.
9. What did the test performed by Stephen Nowicki discover
A.His students are more internally controlled.
B.His students are more externally controlled.
C.His students rely heavily on personal responsibility.
D.His students have similar LOC scores as those tested in 1966.
10. What does the underlined word “disconcerting” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Encouraging.
B.Reassuring.
C.Confusing.
D.Upsetting.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Externality leads to social progress.
B.Personal responsibility is becoming overlooked.
C.Efforts must be made to increase internality.
D.Internality is the basic requirement for people.

Entering the main office of the Anderson Center, it's not uncommon to hear music, since the property has long served as an artists’ community.
But recently, the sounds ringing through the building began to sound unlike others. The music was from the center's art gallery, where Jarrelle Barton practices his guzheng.
Although the ancient Chinese instrument is popular worldwide, guzheng players are rare in Minnesota, and Barton is the first one to participate in Anderson's residency program, “He was chosen because of his technical capabilities, as well as his potential,” said Stephanie Rogers, the center's director.
Most kids of Barton's age are more likely to take up the piano or guitar. But as his grandmother described him, Baton is a “special person”—a little quiet, but with very deep feelings. When he first saw a picture of a guzheng, he tried to make his own out of a wooden tea tray and guitar strings. But the instrument he made was very different from a guzheng. It was light, and it didn't sound great.
Barton begged his grandmother to buy him a guzheng. She agreed, but added that he had to really practice and become a good guzheng player.
Acquiring the instrument proved less complicated than learning to play it. Barton couldn't find any textbooks in English, and the online courses he found were in Chinese too. So, he started teaching himself Mandarin (普通话). At the same time, he accustomed his body to “feeling” guzheng music.
Barton recently uploaded his videos to the social media platform Sina Weibo. They soon went viral, with viewers making comments such as “Great!” or “This foreigner can play our music.”
Music goes beyond nationality. You can learn an instrument regardless of what language you speak. You can learn any instrument you'd like and create music to share with people.
12. Why was Barton the first one to participate in Anderson's residency program
A.His grandmother insisted.
B.He was the first to play guzheng.
C.His skills and talent were impressive.
D.He was one of the few who could play guzheng.
13. How did Barton feel when he first saw a picture of a guzheng
A.Puzzled.
B.Excited.
C.Disappointed.
D.Anxious.
14. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Music is the best way to communicate.
B.Music can be spread far and wide.
C.Music is a universal language.
D.Music can go further.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A.To promote a music program.
B.To advertise the Anderson Center.
C.To persuade foreigner to play guzheng.
D.To introduce the great power of music.

I am a writer for a health and fitness magazine that focuses on success stories about weight loss. For years I have written about other people and their journey to a healthy body, mind and spirit. But I’ve never written my own story.
I wasn’t always overweight. Until age five, I was a healthy, active kid. It wasn’t until my parents started having problems that resulted in a divorce that I turned to food. I struggled with my weight throughout my school years and I reached 260 pounds at college. Today, more than a decade later, people don’t believe that I ever weighed that much. Even I have to pull out the previous pictures to remember. At that time, I never looked at myself in the mirror. I never looked at others in the eye for fear of what they would say about me. I was shy. I was ashamed. I was depressed. I was scared. I even couldn’t find my self-worth. I had no idea what the future would look like.
Like most people I wrote about, I tried all the fad diets (时下流行的节食方法). And what I didn’t realize was that the worst thing I could do was to use food as a form of punishment. That struggling period lasted for a long time.
One night before graduating from college, I looked at my body and imagined myself at eighty-five years old. If I continued walking the path I was on, who would I be What would I look like I saw overweight and health problems. I saw loneliness and unsolved emotional pain. I didn’t like what I saw. Then, I turned to an old college professor for advice. She merely shrugged (耸肩) and said, “You just have to choose.” I was quite confused at that moment. What kind of advice was that Choose what How could I choose Noticing my puzzled expression, the professor just handed me a health book.

Inspired by the book, I knew what I should choose. I chose to stop relying on food to comfort myself and build a healthy lifestyle. I gave up junk food and balanced my daily diet with fresh fruit and vegetables. Every morning and evening, I stuck to regular exercise like jogging and yoga. Whenever I felt upset, I turned to reading and walking instead of eating. It was tough to break my old habits, but I kept reminding myself of the terrible future I had imagined.
Although the process was challenging, my hard work paid off. Months later, I lost plenty of weight and regained confidence. I dared to look into others’ eyes and made many new friends. I finally found my self-worth. Now I share my own weight-loss story in my magazine, hoping to encourage people trapped in the same trouble as me. I truly understand that the best choice we can make is to love ourselves and keep moving forward.
