Chopsticks: More Than Just Tableware
Chopsticks, or kuaizi, are not just eating tools but a window into Chinese culture.
History and Origin
Chopsticks first appeared in China over 5,000 years ago. The earliest evidence — a bronze pair unearthed at the Ruins of Yin in Henan — dates back to about 1,200 BC. Their design carries symbolic meaning: the round eating end stands for heaven, while the square end represents earth, reflecting the deep concern for food supply between the two.
How to Use Chopsticks
Hold one chopstick between your thumb and middle finger, like a pen, with its narrow tip resting on your ring finger. Grip the second with your index finger and thumb, keeping the tips even. Keep the lower one steady; move the top one by bending your index finger, using your thumb as a pivot point. Open and close the chopsticks to pick up food at roughly a 45degree angle. Practice will make the movement smooth.
Etiquette
Etiquette (礼仪) may vary, but some rules are widely followed. Never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice — it resembles incense offerings to the dead. Avoid tapping bowls, playing with chopsticks, or using them to gesture. When sharing food, use serving chopsticks for hygiene (卫生). Do not chew on chopsticks or use them to move bowls. Piercing food is generally discouraged, except for large pieces.
Chopsticks Today
Today, chopsticks are more than tableware. Finely decorated chopsticks are popular gifts, especially for weddings, because kuaizi sounds like “quick” and “son,” expressing good wishes. Some people collect them as artworks. It is even believed that using chopsticks improves finger flexibility and memory. In a modern world, they remain a treasured symbol of Chinese culture.
21. What does the round end of chopsticks represent
A.Earth.
B.Heaven.
C.Food supply.
D.Good wishes.
22. What is the key to using chopsticks properly
A.Speed and strength.
B.Flexibility and control.
C.Patience and caution.
D.Stability and coordination.
23. Where is this text most probably taken from
A.An instruction handbook.
B.A food and dining magazine.
C.A cultural introduction website.
D.An advertisement for tableware.

In a quiet hillside village on the outskirts of Qingdao, Shandong province, an unlikely group of actors has turned everyday rural life into a hot topic online.
Last September, more than 20 villagers from Beiliangjia village in the Qingdao West Coast New Area, none with any previous acting experience, gathered to film a micro-drama series — using nothing more than a smartphone.
Within two weeks of its launch on Chinese social media platforms, the series received more than 250 million views. The figure eventually climbed to 370 million and made it into the top three of trending dramas on the short-video platform Douyin.
Titled Hua Kai Shi Shang — literally Blooming on the Rocks — the series centers on a young woman who marries into a struggling household that includes three unmarried brothers. Through resilience and ingenuity, she gradually helps the family overcome hardship to build a happier life.
The micro-drama series was initially aimed at helping the village sell local produce, such as chestnuts and sweet potatoes. Ding Zhaoting, a local who has experience developing social media accounts and livestream sales for farmers, realized that a typical promotional account might struggle to gain traction (关注) in a village with mostly older residents. Instead, he proposed telling rural stories with the villagers playing themselves.
The sudden popularity also put Beiliangjia on the map. Viewers flooded online comment sections, asking where they could buy the chestnuts, wild mushrooms and other produce featured in the series.
According to Zhang, the village Party chief, from September to December last year, the village’s collective income rose by about 500,000 yuan ($72,000). A new vermicelli processing workshop has since opened and secured orders worth 50,000 yuan.
So far, the unexpected success of Beiliangjia village’s micro-dramas has made it home to some 1,200 film and television companies. The model of using the productions to promote rural products is also spreading to more villages across the district.
24. What do we know about Hua Kai Shi Shang
A.It was professionally filmed.
B.It features mainly elderly villagers.
C.It tells a story of rising from poverty.
D.It originated from an online hot topic.
25. Why was the micro-drama series originally filmed
A.To promote the village.
B.To entertain viewers across the country.
C.To enrich the villagers’ daily life.
D.To help sell the village’s local products.
26. What impact did the micro-drama series bring to the village
A.It attracted tourists to the village.
B.It boosted the village’s economy and fame.
C.It encouraged young people to return.
D.It provided jobs for some elderly residents.
27. What does the success of Beiliangjia village imply
A.Smartphones reshape rural life.
B.Short dramas drive rural vitalization.
C.Local creativity sells village products.
D.Technology creates rural opportunities.

Several years ago, standing outside a cabin in Michigan, I looked up at the night sky. Thousands of stars filled the sky, and the Milky Way unfurled (展开) across it. The sight almost made me, a nonbeliever, offer a word of gratitude — perhaps to Johan Ekl f, author of The Darkness Manifesto.
Ekl f, a bat scientist in Sweden, requires absolute darkness for his work. But this darkness is threatened. In the 1980s, two-thirds of churches in southwest Sweden housed bat colonies. Today, that number has declined by a third due to light pollution. “We are blasting ourselves with light,” he writes.
We have all noticed empty places floodlit at night. Inhabitants of Hong Kong live beneath a night sky 1,200 times brighter than an unlit sky. Citizens of some large cities have never allowed their eyes to adapt to true night vision, which takes half an hour of complete darkness.
The effects on wildlife are equally alarming. A third of vertebrates (脊椎动物) and two-thirds of invertebrates are active at night. Excess light scares away bats, stuns light-sensitive moths, and makes them easy targets for predators. Newly hatched turtles crawl away from shorelines toward distant city lights. Corals no longer mate on schedule, reef fish eggs go unhatched, and birds forget to sing or migrate on time.
Ekl f’s excellent book shaped my thinking. I found myself sharing its insights with my children at the dinner table, repeatedly asking, “Yes, but did you know ” I can think of no better praise than that. However, the author acknowledges that darkness is not safe for everyone. We must address the social issues that make lighted places appealing in the first place.
Some solutions to light pollution are within our grasp: motion-detecting lights, shielded lights that do not reflect upward, and artificial light that mimics natural wavelengths. “We could just turn it all off, but I guess we don’t want to,” Ekl f said. “So it’s vital we find a middle way.”
In 50 years, every city might be lit by environmentally low-impact LED lights — or we might have completely forgotten what darkness is, the sky filled with little moons.
28. Why does the author mention Johan Ekl f in the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To stress his profession.
C.To thank him for the book.
D.To show the book’s influence.
29. The word “blasting” in paragraph 2 most probably means __________.
A.exploding violently.
B.blocking naturally.
C.heating gradually.
D.harming seriously.
30. How does the author show the effects of light pollution on humans and wildlife
A.By quoting sayings and studies.
B.By using data and examples.
C.By sharing experiences and feelings.
D.By raising problems and doubts.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of light pollution
A.Hopeless.
B.Objective.
C.Concerned.
D.Optimistic.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has brought wide-ranging opportunities across industries and transformed the way we live, work and interact. Yet, like earlier technological revolutions, AI is accompanied by ethical challenges, including algorithmic (算法) discrimination, deepfake content and highly autonomous decision-making. These risks make it necessary to carry out ethical supervision immediately so that AI can be developed and used responsibly.
In response, the Chinese government has introduced a trial guideline on the ethics review and service of AI technology, which offers clear guidance and marks a critical step forward in AI governance. Ethical governance of AI is a moral imperative (要紧的事), as AI may deeply affect human well-being, fairness, transparency and privacy. The guideline prioritizes three key areas for ethical review: hybrid (混合) systems influencing human behavior, emotions and health; algorithmic models shaping public opinion; and high-autonomy automated decision-making systems involving safety and health risks.
It is designed to encourage innovation while reducing risks, supporting the participation of universities, research institutions and enterprises in establishing ethical standards and building an ethics service system featuring risk monitoring, testing and certification. This helps improve ethical integrity and lower rule-following costs, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The guideline is part of China’s broader effort to strengthen technology ethics governance, following earlier initiatives and agreeing with the commitment to responsible innovation. It works with the Cybersecurity Law, the Data Security Law and the Personal Information Protection Law to form a comprehensive governance framework.
The guideline also defines six core ethical review areas: human well-being, fairness and justice, controllability and trustworthiness, transparency and explainability, accountability and traceability, and privacy protection, with clear implementation procedures.
Ethical oversight of AI is not a barrier to innovation but a necessary safeguard for responsible progress. This guideline demonstrates China’s leading role in AI governance, showing that development and governance can complement each other to build a sustainable, ethical digital future.
32. What is the main idea of the first paragraph
A.AI has transformed work and interaction.
B.Revolutions always cause ethical problems.
C.Algorithmic discrimination challenges AI.
D.AI development calls for ethical supervision.
33. What is the purpose of the AI ethics review guideline
A.To respond to market demands.
B.To prioritize high-risk areas first.
C.To guide the healthy development of AI.
D.To fill legal gaps in AI governance.
34. Which of the following best describes the guideline
A.It is systematic and well-organized.
B.It is a temporary measure with little effect.
C.It adds new requirements to existing laws.
D.It is currently being tested on a small scale.
35. What is implied in the last paragraph
A.Oversight removes AI barriers.
B.Development and governance go together.
C.Oversight means innovation leadership.
D.Progress and oversight should be balanced.

Frade and Jerry were close friends in the same class. They went to school together, played together, and walked home side by side every single day, sharing all the small joys of their school life.
One day on their way home after school, they spotted a group of older boys throwing stones at the roadside public garden, breaking the small plants and littering the ground carelessly. Frade immediately lit up with excitement and pulled Jerry’s arm, saying, “Come on! Let’s go over and join them. It’s such fun to throw stones around!” But Jerry stepped back and refused firmly, “This is wrong. We shouldn’t damage public things or follow their silly tricks. Our parents are waiting for us at home for dinner, and I don’t want to make them worry about us.”
“You are nothing but a coward, too scared to join us,” Frade shouted at him. Then he ran off quickly to the garden with the other boys, leaving Jerry alone. Jerry said nothing more, turned around and walked home quietly, putting the whole thing behind him.
Soon enough, Frade told every boy in their class that Jerry was a coward. All the classmates laughed at Jerry rudely, looked down on him, and refused to play with him from that day on.
Jerry felt sad and lonely, but he never got angry with Frade for his unfair words. He knew deep down that real courage is not rushing into foolish tricks to win praise, but standing by what is right, even when you are misunderstood and laughed at for no reason. The only thing a person should truly fear is doing something wrong. So he ignored the cold laughter, kept his own pace, went to school and studied hard as usual, never giving up his right beliefs.
Frade never walked home with Jerry again. He stuck with his new friends, all of whom called Jerry a coward. Every day after school, they skipped going straight home, wandering by the river or hanging around elsewhere, fooling around and wasting their time without a care.

A few days later, Frade was in trouble when bathing in the river with his new friends. The water flow suddenly became stronger and swept Frade away. He struggled wildly in the cold water, shouting for help at the top of his voice. His friends panicked and dared not jump into the river to save him. They just stood on the bank, too frightened to do anything. Frade’s strength faded little by little and he was on the point of sinking.
At that moment, Jerry happened to pass by. Hearing the cry for help, he rushed to the river without hesitation. He swam fast toward Frade and pulled him safely back to the bank. Frade felt ashamed and apologized sincerely for speaking ill of Jerry before. Jerry told him that true bravery meant doing the right thing instead of following bad behaviors. From then on, they became close friends again.
