Is it possible to travel through time Well, it doesn't just happen in the movies. The Diomede Islands, two small islands in the Bering Strait, are famous as one of the fewest places where you can do it.
The international date line is an imaginary(虚构的) line that runs through the middle of the Pacific Ocean(太平洋), marking the difference between calendar dates. Crossing the line from east to west, you would need to set your clock forward by a day, while crossing from west to east, you would set it back by a day. The international date line runs from the North to the South Pole, but it isn't straight(笔直的). It just passes right between the Diomede Islands, making it possible to travel through time just by crossing only 3.8 km.
Not only are these two islands in two different countries, but also they are 21 hours apart in time. When it's noon on a Thursday in the Little Diomede Island, it's 9 a. m. on Friday in the Big Diomede Island.
Because they' re only a few kilometers away from each other, you can actually see one of the Diomede Islands from the other one, which means you can look into the future or the past, too. Usually, you'd have to sail or swim between the two Diomede Islands, but during the winter an ice bridge appears between them. You can even walk from one to the other. Unluckily, that's easier said than done.
The international date line between them is also the border between Russia and the United States. The Big Diomede Island, or“Tomorrow Island”, is a part of Russia, while the Little Diomede Island, or“Yesterday Island”, is a US territory(领土). Traveling between the two islands is not allowed, and foreign fishing boats getting too close to either side sometimes get some warning shots(鸣枪警告) from the soldiers.
( )39. Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the text
A. To discuss the possibility of travelling through time.
B. To raise the readers' interest in the Diomede Islands.
C. To test the readers' knowledge about the Diomede Islands.
D. To make the reader think about how to travel through time.
( )40. Which of the following is TRUE about the international date line
A. It is an imaginary straight line.
B. It runs from the North to the South Pole.
C. It runs through the middle of the Bering Strait.
D. When crossing it, you always set the clock back.
( )41.When it's 4:00 a. m. on Monday in the Big Diomede Island, what time is it in the Little Diomede Island
A. 1:00 a. m. on Tuesday. B.7:00 a. m. on Tuesday.
C.1:00 a. m. on Sunday. D.7:00 a. m. on Sunday.
( )42. Why is the Big Diomede Island called“Tomorrow Island”
A. It is a part of Russia.
B. The sun rises earlier there.
C. The international date line runs through it.
D. It is always 21 hours ahead of the Little Diomede Island.
( )43.What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To encourage tourists to go to the Diomede Islands.
B. To explain how the international date line works.
C. To tell people some facts about two special islands.
D. To tell people about cultures of Russia and America.
A new study has suggested that the key to reducing feelings of anger is not venting (letting the angry emotions out) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation.
The study was published emotion, which is then felt by the person. For example, imagine you are in March by Sophie Kjaervik walking through a forest and you see a and Brad Bushman from the bear. Seeing it would probably start a physical response, such as your heart Ohio State University in the beating very fast and sweat breaking US. They wanted to explore out. Your mind then decides that this is the popular theory that fear, which you feel as an emotion.venting(expressing) anger is a good way of reducing it.Examples of venting anger include shouting or hitting something like a cushion, so that you let go of the emotion and therefore don't feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These involved10,189 people, and included a variety of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kjaervik and Bushman define anger as“an emotional response(反应) to a real or imagined threat(威胁)”. They used a theory of emotion(情绪假说) that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind.
The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities influenced anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing— which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger— weren't very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they made people's hearts beat faster. However, activities that decreased physical responses in the body did help to reduce feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are“definitely not the best way to reduce anger”.
The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities— like ball games and team sports— could reduce anger.

Are people less happy or happier when they get older If your answer is“happier”, then you are right. A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.
The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred and forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008.Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped greatly after people arrived at their fifties. Levels of happiness were the highest among the kids and those in their early seventies.
The study also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns(情感模式) as they grow older. However, women at all ages were reported to have more sadness, stress and worry than men.

54 Maybe you regret giving up those music lessons when you were ten. Now here's your chance to try again. Perhaps you wish you could spend time exploring(探索) on your bicycle again, or wonder why you stopped drawing cartoons. Think about going back to the similar activities.
Another way is to think about the hobbies your friends have taken up. 55 Training together will keep both you and your friends more active.
Remember that an activity may not interest you after you' ve tried it. 56 So don't ask your parents to pay for a whole year's lessons right away. Begin slowly, borrow what you need, and see if the activity is really right for you. If you still enjoy an activity after a few weeks, it might be the right hobby for you. 57
