Once, a king’s palace had a beautiful garden filled with colorful creatures. Everyone loved it.
The only thing the king didn’t like in the garden was a dead tree that was hundreds of years old. It was in the center of the garden. The king thought it made the garden less beautiful. Therefore, he cut it down and built a beautiful fountain (喷泉) there.
Sometime later, a wise noble (贵族成员) found something strange when he was visiting the palace. “During the time I’ve spent here, I’ve seen nothing except the fountain and a few small birds…” The king was shocked and tried to find out why, but no one could give a good answer.
Years later, however, a young man came to the king and said he could explain the situation. “The old tree was the home of moths (飞蛾). Their feces (粪便) were very important for the growth of plants. These plants fed colorful insects, and these insects were food for birds. So, the answer is the tree – it supported many creatures (生物),” the man said.
“I’ll give you a lot of money. Could you fix the garden ” the king asked.
“I can do it, but you won’t live to see it. It will take many years for the natural balance to return,” the man answered.

Hail (冰雹) is a form of precipitation (降水形式)—like rain or snow—that is made up of ice. A storm that produces hail is called a hailstorm. Hailstorms may happen all year long. Hail can even form in summer as long as the storms are strong.
Hailstorms often visit the United States. The areas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming, are known as “Hail Alley,” and they suffer seven to nine hail days every year. It’s hard to tell exactly when a hailstorm might come.
Hailstorms are very dangerous. They can cause lots of damage to people, buildings, cars, plants and animals. In fact, hailstorms can even cause deaths. For example, a hailstorm caused the deaths of over 1,000 people in 1360. So we should know how to stay safe during a hailstorm.
First, one way to protect yourself from a hailstorm is to have your tools prepared throughout the year, and one of them must be helmets (头盔). They can help you protect your head from both the hail itself and other things brought by a heavy hailstorm. Second, you should also make a plan for your family so that you all know where to go for safety. Third, make sure you stay inside and stay away from windows until the hail stops. If possible, find a room at least one level down from the top of the house. Finally, if you get caught outside in a hailstorm and can’t find a house to stay in, find something to protect your head. Remember: Stay out of lowland (低洼地区) areas, because they could be full of water. And don’t forget to avoid trees.
11. What can we learn about hailstorms from Paragraph 1
A.They only happen in winter.
B.They are the same as snow.
C.They are storms that produce rain.
D.They are a kind of precipitation made of ice.
12. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 3
A.To tell where hailstorms happen.
B.To describe what hail looks like.
C.To give an example of a hailstorm.
D.To show why we need to learn to be safe.
13. What should you do if you are caught outside during a hailstorm
A.Stay under a big tree.
B.Run to a lowland area.
C.Protect your head and avoid trees.
D.Open your umbrella and keep walking.
14. Why should people wear helmets during a hailstorm
A.Because helmets can keep them warm.
B.Because helmets can stop the hailstorm.
C.Because helmets can help us see better.
D.Because helmets can protect our heads.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The harms of hailstorms.
