As Christopher looked down at the milk in his bowl, his elder sister, Kayla, was reading a book on the sofa. Suddenly, Christopher saw the bowl begin to shake. At the same time, he realized the whole room was shaking. Kayla stood up suddenly and shouted, “Earthquake!”
The bowls and plates began making a loud sound in the kitchen. Several books fell down to the floor. A vase filled with flowers fell from the table in the corner of the dining room and broke.
Christopher and Kayla looked at each other and had the same thought—hide under the table! Together they hid under the table and covered their heads. Christopher’s eyes were closed, and he hoped it would soon be over. He opened his eyes just enough to see what his sister was doing. Kayla was next to him, huddled (蜷缩) in the same position. Then, as quickly as it had begun, the shaking died away. Christopher and Kayla slowly sat up, facing each other under the table.
“Are you all right ” Kayla asked, clearly caring about her brother.
“Yeah,” Christopher answered. “That was pretty scary, huh Are you okay ”
Kayla nodded and stood up. Christopher stood next to her, and they checked the damage around the room. When the phone rang, Christopher picked up the phone. His mother was on the other end. Christopher described the mess the earthquake had left inside their home.

Do you often watch short videos and read funny posts, but find it hard to finish a book It’s not just about your willpower. The way we read is changing.
In the past, reading a paper book was like a deep trip. You could really get into the story. Now, reading is more like information surfing. We quickly look at lots of information on our phones or computers. Our attention jumps between many pop-ups (弹窗). This scattered reading lets us know more things, but we think less deeply about them.
Also, reading is no longer an activity by yourself. On some apps, you can see your friends’ notes. On other apps, you can discuss stories with others. Reading has become a social activity. You can read, watch and share.
What’s more, the book itself has changed. It is no longer just pages of words; it often includes videos, sounds, and pictures. You can “listen to books” or read with others online.
Is this change good or bad It makes knowledge easier to get, but we might lose the ability to think deeply. The real point is not whether you read on a screen, but whether you can read actively.
So, try turning off your phones for half an hour each day. Find the quiet focus of deep reading again. That is the power for real thinking.
31. How does the writer begin the text
A.By showing a fact.
B.By asking a question.
C.By telling a story.
D.By giving an example.

B.Dan, who is taking notes while reading.
C.Mary, who enjoys watching many pop-ups.
D.Bob, who is listening to music while studying.
33. What makes reading become a social activity now
A.Reading paper books alone quietly at home.
B.“Listening to books” with family members at home.
C.Seeing friends’ notes and discussing stories with others on apps.
D.Quickly looking through news and short videos on mobile phones.
