II. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically
correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other
blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
The Generation that grew up online now wants out
It’s the love-hate relationship that defined a generation. We think we know all about teenagers and the phones
they’re so closely tied to. They sleep with phones under the pillow and even panic at the prospect of
(21)________(deny) Wifi. Yet the first generation to have never really known a life without social media is now
grown up enough to reflect on (22)________ it may have done to them, and the answers are heartbreaking.
Two-thirds of 16-to-24-year-olds think social media does more harm than good, according to a survey for the
New Britain Project. Half thought they spent too much time on it when they were younger, with regret
(23)________(high) among those who started using social media youngest. And most tellingly of all, four in five
said they (24)________(keep) their own children away from screens if they became parents. This isn’t how anyone
talks about happy scenes, (25)________ how you look back on a miserable relationship.
2 / 10
Though the focus groups confirmed that parents’ desperation (26)________ assistance in preventing children
from screens, what’s refreshing about the research is that it indicates less generational conflicts than commonly
perceived. (27)________ it turns out, Generation Z don’t need more lectures from their often equally addicted
elders about getting off that bloody phone. If anything, they (28)________ be quietly writing the rulebook we failed
to provide.
This Friday, parliament will vote on a mobile phone safety bill, (29)________(expect) to be approved by the
government, but only after substantial amendments (修订 ) to its controversial clauses. Meanwhile, in a striking
contrast, Generation Z are taking matters into their own hands. For example, some of them now seem
(30)________(try) to rediscover pre-digital socialization patterns, organizing offline meetups where mobile phones
are deliberately left at the door to cultivate deeper human connections.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that
there is one word more than you need.
A. coat B. combination C. costly D. expenses E. infections F. interfere
G. minimizing H. harsh I. stemming J. warm-toned K. worn-out
The costlier, the better
“When it comes to health and wellness, people tend to prioritize diet and exercise above all else. Many
underestimate the role that skin health plays, (31)________ its significance.” says a dermatologist (皮肤科医生) at
the University of California. In fact, this largest organ of the body is vital to health, keeping moisture (水分) in and
bacteria out. There are many things that can (32)________ with these functions. Dry weather draws moisture from
the skin. Bathing or showering too often or using (33)________ cleansers that wash away naturally occurring oils,
can also cause problems. When the skin becomes too dry, it can cause cracks (裂纹) in the skin which can lead to
(34)________.
Interestingly, some people are more subject to skin dryness than others. According to the American Academy
of Dermatology, those with (35)________ skin are less likely to have dry skin than people with black, brown
or fair skin. Age is also a factor. The skin naturally produces chemicals called sebums that (36)________, protect
and moisturize the skin. Oil production tends to peak during adolescence and then slowly decreases over time.
To relieve skin dryness, experts say that cheaper products work just as well as the (37)________ ones, so
people don’t need to break the bank. Where the extra (38)________ may pay off is on products that reduce the
signs of ageing. As people age, skin cell production slows and the skin becomes thinner. Older people also produce
less collagen, which keeps the skin smooth and firm. This (39)________ leads to wrinkles.
Retinol and other retinoids, a class of products chemically (40)________ from vitamin A, reduce the
appearance of wrinkles. A study on 36 elderly participants found fewer wrinkles on arms treated with retinol.
Nearly 20 years later, experts still recommend it to reduce signs of aging.

each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Nowadays, people live online and generate far more data than they did just a decade ago. Everyone leaves
digital traces behind when they die, either deliberately, in the form of social-media profiles and posts, or
(41)________, with web searches, phone-location data and so on.
Unlike bodies, data do not (42)________. This condition makes the modern world “post-mortal (数字身后时
代)”. The dead remain there for us in a way that has not been (43)________ in pre-digital society. The digital era
has reshaped humans’ relationship with the dead. For instance, a Facebook notification to send birthday wishes to a
late family member may pop up. That sort of (44)________ would probably never have happened before social
media, because everyone who knew that person’s birthday also would have known that he was dead. Such
notifications are set to grow more common and research suggests that, on Facebook, the dead may well
(45)________ the living within 40 years.

that it was developing a feature allowing its virtual assistant, Alexa to (46)________the voice of a deceased relative.
(47)________, startups have used data to make chatbots of the departed. There is no doubt that more (48)________
versions will follow.
However, despite its good implications, this technology also raises a series of (49)________ questions. To
whom do the dead’s data belong Are data something people create, or something that, (50)________, they are a
digital analogue (类 似 物 ) to a physical body If data are a digital equivalent, what obligations does that
(51)________ on the living After all, most cultures dislike just leaving a dead body in the open to break down.
These are not merely questions for individuals wondering what to do with their loved ones’ (52)________.
They are questions for society at large. After all, historians often study the diaries of the dead. Their writers may
have preferred to keep the contents private, but the (53)________ such documents can shine on humanity’s past
outweighs the late owner’s wishes. A political scientist notes that data (54)________ “the biggest archive (档案) of
human behaviour in the history of our species”; data are therefore an irreplaceable, invaluable record for future
generations. As this record is collective, (55)________ for it should be, too. Therefore, establishing clear

to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I’ve been in Paris for 12 hours and although it’s overwhelming (不知所措的 ), I’m excited. This is such a
different experience than Tokyo, aka the COVID Olympics, where we were separated from each other with little
social interaction. I’m approaching Paris with fresh eyes because it feels like the whole city is at my fingertips to
explore. I’m taking a lot of pictures and putting my heart and soul into it because while one Olympics is cool,
getting to my second is very special. I’m trying to make sure I enjoy every moment.
At the Olympic trials in June, races were late in the day and just sitting around watching YouTube made me
anxious. But instead of tensing up, I started jumping on the bed to loosen up my legs and doing things that relaxed
me and got me back into my body. When the anxiety shows up physically, I know I need to regain control. Things
like jumping on the bed put me back in the driver’s seat.
But as it gets closer to race day, it’s a different story. I can be short-tempered. The smallest things can crash
my gears like if I’m getting too many texts or someone’s playing loud music. That’s how I know I’m anxious
because those things would not bother me otherwise.
I remember before I stepped onto the field, I took a deep breath, looked in the mirror and said, “Kendall, you
can’t get too worked up because if you get emotional, it’s going to affect your body and your race.” I had to stay
level-headed and calm, and I was proud that I handled the incident with such self-control. In the past, I’ve let my
anxiety take over and ruin races, so it made me proud to have the maturity to self-regulate and decide that I wasn’t
going to let my emotions rob me of a personal record.
I tell the young women I coach at Voice In Sport that the moment isn’t bigger than you even in the case of the
Olympics, the world’s biggest stage. It’s a huge deal and an accomplishment in and of itself, but I tell them, “You’
re here for a reason, because you’re supposed to be here. You’ve earned your spot and are just as talented as anyone
else in the field.”
56. What sets Tokyo Olympics and Paris Olympics apart according to the writer
A. Long flight. B. Cultural engagement.
C. Means of transport. D. Performance improvement.
57. What change did the writer go through with the race day approaching
A. She was sensitive to and easily bothered by minor disturbances.
B. She turned to driving to feel grounded and ready for competition.
C. She favored sending texts over playing loud music to relieve anxiety.
D. She studied performances and analyzed strategies while watching YouTube.
58. What can be implied from the fourth paragraph
A. With self-control, the author succeeded in breaking her personal record.
B. Physical training rather than mental preparations work in handling anxiety.
C. The author learned from the past experiences and performed better this time.
D. Her coach provided her with guidance, reminding her of hard work and potential.
59. Which quote might the author agree with most
A. Feelings are just visitors; let it be.
B. Don’t stop when you are tired; stop when you are done.
C. Hard days are best because that’s where champions are made.
D. It’s not the load that breaks you down; it’s the way you carry it.

At a hospital in a local farm, Lauren Kasper tended to patients resting in beds, some too sick to be transferred
to a chair. Many arrived in wheelchairs or walked with canes, their bodies weakened from kidney disease. Kasper,
a nurse practitioner, was struck by how young many of her patients were. “The majority of the patients that you
would see in a typical outpatient center are 60-plus,” she said. “With these patients, some of them were in their 20s
and their 30s, 40s. The fact that they were a really significant portion of the population was really astonishing.”
This summer much of the US baked under deadly, record-breaking heat. While extreme heat exposure is
commonly associated with acute emergencies like heatstroke (中暑), researchers are finding it can also contribute to
longer-term health problems, like heart disease, cognitive decline and kidney failure.
When the body is exposed to extreme heat, the cardiovascular (心血管) system goes into overdrive to keep the
body at a safe temperature. Over time, experts say, these functions take a toll on organs like the heart and kidneys
– especially for people who push themselves physically outdoors.
It’s still unclear whether heat is the primary cause of the illness in otherwise healthy young people, or if other
factors like pesticides, polluted drinking water or the use of painkillers are also contributing, researchers say. “This
is probably multifactorial, multiple things coming together, making the wave of farm workers suffering kidney
dysfunction,” said Roxana Chicas, a registered nurse and professor at Emory University. “But I do think that losing
water inside the body is one of the biggest players.”
Chicas said some workers with kidney disease ultimately return to their home countries because they can’t
access healthcare in the US, and they have family to care for them at home. Heat protections for workers in the US
are currently a patchwork. Only a handful of states have heat exposure standards. This July, the federal (联邦 )
government proposed a national heat standard that could go into effect next year, affecting some 36 million workers.
Experts said such a standard could help prevent heat-related illnesses.
But Chicas said what’s happening to farmworkers is a warning to people who might not currently feel they’re
in danger. “Farmworkers, being at the frontline of climate change, are already giving us a glimpse into this kidney
dysfunction associated with rising temperatures,” she said. “In a warming climate, we could all be at risk for this.”
63. Kasper was astonished to find that __________.
A. many outdoor workers suffer from heatstroke
B. kidney diseases were common in farmworkers
C. the majority of the patients are over 60 years old
D. quite a few young men are victims of kidney diseases
64. The underlined phrase “take a toll on” in para. 3 means __________.
A. add stress to B. put up with
C. make use of D. break down into
65. What can be inferred from the last 3 paragraphs
A. The US national heat standard has been put into use this July.
B. Global warming may bring potential kidney disease risks to everyone.
C. Polluted drinking water may be the primary causes for the kidney diseases.
D. Farm workers return to their own countries because they lack money for treatment.
66. What might be the best title for the passage
A. A Growing Concern in the US about Kidney Failure
B. A Nurse’s Experience with Outdoor Farm Workers
C. Long-Term Health Impacts of Extreme Heat Revealed
D. Benefits of National Heat Standards for Outdoor Workers

Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence
can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Persistence culture, in contrast, prioritizes the process itself.
B. Persistence culture shifts the focus of measuring success inward.
C. No matter how hard you hustle, success isn’t always within your control.
D. The truth is that success doesn’t come from mindless hustle, but something deeper: persistence.
E. Maybe your podcast isn’t winning millions of downloads—but are you becoming a better interviewer
F. But if you follow the hustle mentality, your focus shifts to audience growth and social media engagement.
Why Hustle(忙碌) Culture Is Failing You
If you listen to today’s experts talking about success, you’ll hear a near-identical philosophy: Hustle harder.
Work harder. Kill it. It sounds like success is just a matter of willpower—push yourself hard enough, and the life of
your dreams is within reach.
Many young people are buying into this mindset, spending every waking hour working toward ambitious
goals, only to find themselves exhausted, frustrated, and unfulfilled. Hustle culture promises success, but it often
leads to burnout and disappointment. (67) ________ Here’s why hustle culture is likely to make you feel worse,
and why persistence is the real key to long-term happiness.
Hustle culture glorifies big, ambitious goals. But what it won’t tell you is that most of these goals require a
mix of timing, luck, and sometimes even genetics. (68) ________ If you’re constantly striving for massive
achievements without acknowledging the role of external factors, you’re likely to face disappointment. When that
comes, it’s easy to internalize it as a personal failure. Persistence culture, on the other hand, emphasizes consistent
effort over time. It encourages growth, learning, and steady improvement—factors that are within your control.
Another major flaw of hustle culture is its obsession with outcomes rather than the process. It tells you to
chase success at all costs, even if that means doing things you hate along the way. For example, let’s say you love
podcasting. You enjoy the conversations, the storytelling, the connection with your audience. (69) ________ To
“succeed,” you have to start making TikTok videos and learning marketing strategies— neither of which you
actually enjoy.
(70) ________ It asks: Do you enjoy what you’re doing Does it energize you Can you see yourself doing it
for years, regardless of ultimate success When you love the process, you don’t need external recognition to keep
going.

than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
76. Keeping the Kids Eating Healthy
Fruits and vegetables are super important for kids to be able to grow up healthy and strong. Science
recommends that children aged 2 to 18 get at least two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables each day.
But getting kids to eat their fruits and vegetables is often easier said than done. If you need additional reasons to
help your kids boost their intake, new research has found that students who eat more fruits and vegetables might
have better mental well-being than those who eat less.
A recent study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health looked at 9,000 students from across the
U.K. About 7,500 were in secondary school, and 1,500 were in primary school. Students self-reported their diet and
were given age-appropriate tests for mental well-being that looked at happiness, relaxation and healthy
interpersonal relationships. The study found a strong association between eating more fruits and vegetables and
higher mental well-being scores. However, only about 25 percent of the students met the recommendation of at
least five servings of produce a day.
Another interesting finding concerned breakfast, an especially important meal for school-age kids, as it
provides the fuel they need to learn and function in general. However, the research found that more than one in five
secondary schoolchildren and one in 10 primary schoolchildren didn’t eat a standard breakfast at all, and many just
had a snack or drink in place of a meal. Those who had a full breakfast had significantly better mental well-being
scores than those who skipped the morning meal.
In short, the findings suggest that eating a healthy diet that includes a full breakfast and at least five servings
of fruits and vegetables a day leads to the best mental-health outcomes for children. Unfortunately, many students
surveyed were missing the mark with either fruits and vegetables, breakfast, or both.
