In a crisis, every second is important. Official alerts can save lives by warning people of danger and telling them whether to leave the area, stay indoors, or take other safety measures. To better protect yourself and your family, it is important to understand the main emergency alert systems and how to use them. Here are four important systems you should keep in mind.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)
* How It Works:
WEA sends short emergency messages from government officials to all enabled mobile phones in a certain area. These alerts are used for serious threats, AMBER Alerts, and Presidential messages.
* How to Access:
You do not need to download an app or subscribe to any service. It is available on most modern smartphones. Check your phone’s notification settings to ensure they are on.
* Key Benefit:
WEA can reach you wherever you are, as long as your phone is in the warning area. It is fast, direct, and easy to receive.
Emergency Alert System (EAS)
* How It Works:
EAS is a national warning system that interrupts TV and radio programs to broadcast emergency information. It is often used during severe weather, natural disasters, and other urgent events.
* How to Access:
Tune in to your local television or radio station.
* Key Benefit:
EAS often keeps working even when the Internet or mobile phone service is unavailable, making it an important backup.
NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards
* How It Works:
This nationwide radio network provides weather and hazard information 24 hours a day from the National Weather Service (NWS).
* How to Access:
You need a special NOAA weather radio, which can be bought online or in electronics stores.
* Key Benefit:
It offers continuous and reliable updates, especially helpful in areas where storms, floods, or other disasters happen often.
FEMA App
* How It Works:
The FEMA App is a free mobile app that offers real-time weather alerts, shelter information, and safety tips. It also allows users to receive alerts for multiple locations.
* How to Access:
Download it for free from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
* Key Benefit:
The app helps you keep track of your own area and your family’s locations, find shelters quickly, and get help after a disaster.
Using more than one alert system is a smart way to stay informed and prepared when danger strikes.

I was 16 when Dad first took me rock climbing on high cliffs. After getting through shorter walls that felt like kid stuff, I was eager for a real challenge.
One sunny day, we hiked to the base of Mount Edith. Dad led the way, fixing metal spikes (尖状物) into cracks while I held the rope from below to keep him safe. Connected to him by a red rope, I followed his path up. Reaching the peak, I truly felt on top of the world — strong and fearless.
However, sliding down the rope toward the opposite side was a different story. Looking down the steep drop, my stomach tightened with fear. Lacking enough rope, Dad had to tie our line to an old gray rope left by previous climbers. As I went over the edge, my heart beat so wildly that I wished I were safely back at the campsite (野营地) roasting marshmallows with my sisters.
Halfway down, I paused on a piece of rock sticking out. My leg cramped, and my fingers grew cold. Just then, Dad yelled, “Rock!” A stone struck my hand, sending a sharp pain up my arm. Gasping for air, I was terrified that one wrong step would send me falling. Too scared to look down, I focused solely on the thin red rope connecting me to Dad above.
When Dad reached me, I was freezing, exhausted, and shaking. Noticing my bruised (瘀伤) hand, he calmly instructed, “Just lean back and let the safety belt take your weight.” To show me it was safe, he pushed himself off the rock face, sitting back with his legs hanging in midair. Seeing the rope hold firm, I cautiously followed his lead. My legs finally stopped trembling, and together, we moved down the rest of the way.
When my feet touched the ground, my legs collapsed. I was deeply grateful for the earth’s solidness. In that moment, I realized it wasn’t just the climbing itself I loved, but the exhilarating (兴奋的) feeling of being a climber — adventurous and capable.
We went on many more adventures after that. Despite moments of fear, I always trusted Dad. Every minor injury or sudden storm simply added another legendary page to our family stories.

A.show how he eased her panic
B.prove the equipment often failed

As more people around the world choose seafood as part of their diet, the pressure on the seafood industry continues to grow. To meet this rising demand, sea farming — the practice of raising seafood in the ocean — is expanding at a fast pace. A new study suggests that this growth, if carefully planned, could help provide more food for humans while doing less damage to marine (海洋的) life.
The study was led by Deqiang Ma, a researcher at the University of Michigan. According to Ma, sea farming does not have to come at the cost of the ocean’s health. With thoughtful planning, it can develop in a safer and more long-term way.
To explore this possibility, Ma and an international team of researchers built a model to examine how the expansion of sea farming might affect more than 20,000 marine species. Their model first showed the current effects of sea farming and then predicted how those effects might change by 2050 under different conditions. The team also considered two climate change models, each based on different levels of global warming and greenhouse gas emissions.
The results showed that the future of sea farming could vary greatly depending on how and where it develops. In the best-case situation, seafood production could increase to 2.36 times the current level, while the overall impact on marine life could drop by as much as 30.5%. In the worst-case situation, however, the picture was far less hopeful. If new sea farms were built in the most environmentally sensitive areas, the harm to marine life could be more than four times greater than if farms were placed randomly.
Neil Carter, a senior author of the study, stressed that making reliable predictions requires knowledge from many fields, including climate science, economics, and marine production. Only by combining these areas can researchers understand the full picture.
The study also makes one point especially clear: there is no single answer for every region. A plan that works well in the South Pacific may not suit coastal Europe. Moreover, in every situation studied, some sea mammals — such as whales, seals, and sea lions — could still be affected. For decision-makers, the challenge is clear: they must find a balance between feeding people and protecting the ocean.
56. What is the purpose of Deqiang Ma’s study
A.To figure out the real costs of sea farms.
B.To speed up the global expansion of sea farming.
C.To predict the future trends of the seafood industry.
D.To balance human food needs and marine life protection.
57. How did the research team forecast the impacts of sea farming
A.By measuring current greenhouse gas emissions.
B.By building new farms in highly sensitive areas.
C.By modeling changes under different conditions.
D.By tracking the exact patterns of marine species.
58. What can we infer about sea farming from Paragraph 4
A.Seafood production will likely double in most global regions.
B.Careful location choices determine its overall safety for nature.
C.Unplanned farm expansion brings much higher profits to businesses.
D.Marine animals will largely suffer from terrible environmental damage.
59. Why does the author mention Neil Carter’s opinion in Paragraph 5
A.To suggest a new method for huge marine production.
B.To stress the great urgency of handling climate change.
C.To highlight the clear need of combining different fields.
D.To question the overall reliability of the research models.
60. What message does the last paragraph primarily intend to convey
A.Different local plans are needed to solve the challenge.
B.Coastal Europe needs more advanced models than other areas.
C.Policymakers should apply a single standard to protect oceans.
D.Marine animals will always suffer from the farming expansion.

Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake, candles, and family. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history. The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, a challenging 2,200-mile route stretching across 14 states from Georgia to Maine. With climbs and descents equal to scaling (攀爬) Mount Everest 16 times, the trail is one of America’s greatest tests of endurance.
For Kellenberger, however, the journey was about more than distance. It was about seeing the country in a way few people ever do. “You see incredible parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see otherwise,” she said. “So much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.”
Her dream began long ago. Growing up on a farm in Howell, Michigan, she developed an early fascination with the famous footpath. For years, she imagined hiking the entire trail, but work, family, and daily responsibilities left no room for the six-month adventure. Eventually, she realized that nothing was truly holding her back. So in 2024, she set off to turn a lifelong dream into reality.
The hike was far from easy. Along the way, Kellenberger suffered dehydration (脱水), took several falls, and even contracted Lyme disease, a disease spread by ticks (蜱). Then Hurricane Helene tore through the eastern United States, forcing her to stop at the southern Virginia border. Many would have seen that as the end, but not Kellenberger. Determined to finish, she changed her route, headed north, and resumed the journey in the spring of 2025, pushing through the rocky and exhausting terrain (地形) of New England.
When she finally reached the end, her emotions came rushing in. She felt excited, relieved, and deeply moved at the same time. “I was really looking forward to saying, ‘I am done,’” she said. But she also knew she would miss the peace and tranquility (平静) of life on the trail.
Looking back, Kellenberger described Maine and New Hampshire as the toughest stretches, yet also the most rewarding. After months of hiking through rain, heat, pain, and hardship, she now says she is in the best shape of her life. More importantly, her story proves that age is no barrier to adventure, and that it is never too late to chase a dream.
