The Rise of “Texting Pleasing Syndrome”
In recent years, a subtle but significant change has taken place in online communication, where people increasingly avoid 9. ______(use) plain words like “okay” and instead prefer softer alternatives such as “okay~”, “sure ha”, or reduplicated words accompanied by emojis. This phenomenon, known as “texting pleasing syndrome”, reflects a growing tendency to decorate messages 10. ______ friendly tone markers in order to reduce the risk of being perceived as cold or aggressive.
The reasons behind this trend are closely related to the limitations of text-based communication. Unlike face-to-face conversations, typed words cannot convey tone of voice or facial expressions, 11. ______ often leads to misunderstandings. By adding extra “ha”, “ja”, or a tilde at the end of a sentence, people try to bridge the emotional gap and make their intentions 12. ______(clear). For many, this habit is not about pleasing others out of insecurity but about easing the anxiety that comes with worrying about miscommunication.
However, opinions on this behavior remain divided. Some argue that these softeners create a friendlier and more harmonious online environment, where messages are less likely to be misinterpreted.13. ______, however, believe that overusing such expressions adds unnecessary emotional labor, forces people into an unnatural performance, and conceals genuine feelings. 14. ______ was once considered a thoughtful gesture may gradually turn into a social expectation, making people feel obliged to adopt a “pleasing” style even when they do not truly wish to.
In conclusion, while polite and warm expressions can facilitate smooth communication, excessive formulaic flattery 15. ______ never replace sincerity and true respect. Developing good communication habits means balancing kindness with authenticity. After all, a heartfelt “thank you” always speaks louder than a dozen hollow “ha”s.

Why We Should Record Travel Moments
On a rainy summer day, I trekked through the mud to a medieval fortress (堡垒) perched high atop a cliff. After descending into a dark cavern (洞穴) and twisting through its dim corridors, I finally arrived at the main (21)______ of the Cave of the Fairies: a plunging waterfall. As the splatter echoed through the cavern, I closed my eyes and took out my phone to record the rush of dreamy reality before me.
I had come in search of a sound, not a(n) (22)______. Throughout my travels, I’ve found myself collecting sound recordings the way other people collect (23)______. On my phone, there’s a recording of the soft, muffled footsteps and whispers inside The Art Institute of Chicago; the chirping birdsongs and rush of wind whistling through the redwoods in California; and much more.
Just as some travellers take photos of landscapes or their food, I started doing this as a strange and artistic way to help me remember some of the most interesting (24)______ of my trips. I’ve found that when I listen back to these recordings, I’m able to recall each place and moment in a different way than I can by scrolling through images. It turns out this may be because our brains remember sound differently than other types of senses.
According to Dr. James Giordano, our brains process information and turn it into memories by receiving it through our senses, encoding it and storing it. The information we receive and process with our ears is called echoic memory (声像记忆). Giordano explained that our brains (25)______ sound into memory in a nearly identical way as we do with other senses, yet it appears we are far better at remembering what we see and touch than what we hear.
A study suggests that if we take a picture of something and record the sound of the same thing, the image will appear more (26)______ to us when we look back at it on our phones, while the sound will seem fresher and, in a way, newer or more distinct.
Since our sound memories are bad, it’s perhaps more important to record sounds than to take photos, so that we can (27)______ recall the experience. Amy Poremba, who conducted the study, seems to agree. “I went to Hawaii to the Big Island, and there are black volcanic beaches there. They make this kind of tinkling-glass sound when the waves hit them.” Poremba was so (28)______ by the sound that she recorded it. After flying back home, she said she “listened to it over and over again”.
It seems Poremba and I are not alone in believing soundscapes (声景) tell a story. In recent decades, there has been a heightened (29)______ of how learning to listen to the world around us can reveal an entirely different form of cultural immersion, such as a soundscape campaign launched in Lapland.
Months after climbing out of the dark cavern, in my Los Angeles home, I find myself popping on my headphones and listening back to the rush of falling water. When I close my eyes, I can feel the spray of water against my skin, the sense of letting my ears (30)______ me on a faraway adventure. Mentally, I’m right back there – if only for a moment.
III. Reading Comprehension
Section A (15%)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
How to Know If You Talk Too Much
Talking can cloud your perception like smoke in your eyes. Once you’re on a roll, it’s very easy to not notice that you’ve (31)______ your welcome. You may not even realize that the other person is (32)______ trying to get a word in, or subtly signaling that they need to be elsewhere.
Why does this happen First, the very simple reason is that all human beings have a (n) (33)______ to be listened to. But second, the process of talking about ourselves releases dopamine, the pleasure hormone. One of the reasons gabby(喋喋不休的) people keep gabbing is because they become (34)______ that pleasure.
Not long after my book, Just Listen, came out, I too succumbed (屈服) to ignoring signs that I had started to (35)______ my friend and fellow coach, Marty Nemko, host of a radio show. He and I have been coaching each other for some time. He (36)______ when he told me, “Mark, for an expert on listening, you need to talk less and listen more.”
After I recovered from the (37)______, he pointed out a useful strategy that I have been using. It’s helping me and it might help you. Nemko calls it the Traffic Light Rule.
In the first 20 seconds of talking, your light is green; your listener is liking you, as long as your statement is (38)______ to the conversation and hopefully in service of the other person. But unless you are an extremely-gifted raconteur (讲故事高手), people who talk for more than roughly half a minute are often perceived as too chatty. So the light turns yellow for the next 20 seconds — now the (39)______ is increasing that the other person is beginning to lose interest or think you’re long-winded (啰嗦的). At the 40-second mark, your light is red. Yes, there’s an occasional time you want to run that red light and keep talking, but the vast majority of the time, you’d better stop or you’re in (40)______.
Whatever the cause, filibustering (长篇大论) is usually a conversational turn-off (扫兴的事), and may result in both of you deteriorating (恶化) into alternating monologues (独角戏). And that certainly will do little to move the conversation or your (41)______ forward.
One reason some people are long-winded is because they’re trying to impress their conversational counterpart with how smart they are, often because they don’t actually feel that way underneath. If this is the case for you, realize that (42)______ to talk will only cause the other person to be less impressed.
Of course, some people who talk too much simply “may not have a sense of the (43)______ of time,” Nemko says. If this is the case, the cure is not to look inside yourself for psychological insight. It’s just to develop a better (44)______ sense of how long 20 and 40 seconds are.
Finally, remember that even 20 seconds of talking can be a turn-off if you don’t include the other person in the conversation. To avoid that, ask questions, try to (45)______ what they say, and look for ways to include them in the conversation so it is a genuine dialogue instead of a diatribe (长篇大论).
Well, I think my 40 seconds is up, so I’ll stop here.

Beauty that can’t be seen
In the serene town of Willowbrook resided the young maiden Lily. Her skin bore the intricate tapestry of a rare condition, a mosaic of scars and blemishes that danced across her face like a testament to the trials she had endured. Yet, within this canvas of imperfections, Lily’s heart radiated a warmth that enveloped all who crossed her path in a tender embrace.
One fateful afternoon, as the sun descended in a cascade of golden hues, Lily’s path intertwined with that of Lucas, a young man whose world was veiled in eternal darkness. Drawn by the angelic voice of Lily and the kindness that exuded from her very being, Lucas found comfort in her presence. Their friendship blossomed like a delicate flower, each moment spent together a symphony of shared laughter and unspoken understanding.
As the days bring more shared experiences, Lucas found himself fascinated by the world as perceived through Lily’s eyes. In her, he discovered a kaleidoscope (万花筒) of beauty that transcended the confines of sight, a beauty woven from threads of kindness, compassion, and an unwavering attitude. In the quest for radiant and youthful skin, many people turn to cosmetic products and treatments. However, nature provides us with a bounty of ingredients that can work wonders for our skin without the need for harsh chemicals or invasive procedures. Incorporating food-based ingredients into your skincare routine can be a delicious and effective way to nourish and pamper your skin.
Milk is not just a staple in our diets; it also has skincare benefits. Rich in proteins and lipids (油脂), milk helps the skin retain water, keeping it moist and supple, if drunk regularly. However, you can’t add milk into homemade face masks for a hydrating boost, because it might cause skin allergy (过敏) due to the rich nutrition which can’t be absorbed by skin.
Olive oil, a Mediterranean staple, is not only great for cooking but also for moisturizing the skin, making it silky and smooth. While olive oil is an excellent moisturizer, it’s best to use products containing olive oil on the arms and legs rather than the face to avoid clogging pores.
Grapes are not only a delicious snack but also a mild source of antioxidants, providing anti-aging protection by combating free radicals (自由基) which can cause damage to the skin. Adding grapes to your diet or skincare routine can help promote a more youthful complexion.
Papaya, thanks to its enzyme papain, can help to dissolve pore-blocking debris and slough off dead skin cells, revealing a smoother and brighter complexion. However, individuals with sensitive skin or a papaya allergy should proceed with caution.
Strawberries are not just sweet and juicy; they can also help calm redness. The antioxidants in strawberries work to even out skin tone and improve the overall texture of the skin, making it appear more uniform and clear. However, individuals with berry allergies should steer clear of strawberry-based products.
Honey helps to lock in moisture and alleviate dry patches, leaving the skin soft and hydrated. However, those with acne-prone skin should use honey-based products sparingly, as they may be too rich and potentially pore-clogging. Therefore, use honey in moderation and choose products with lighter formulas.
Tangerines are packed with fruit acids that help exfoliate (去屑) the skin, promoting a smoother and more radiant complexion. Skincare products containing citrus ingredients can help slough off dead skin cells and reveal a fresh layer of skin underneath.
Incorporating these food-based ingredients into your skincare routine can provide numerous benefits for your skin, from hydration and exfoliation to antioxidant protection and anti-aging benefits. By harnessing the power of nature’s bounty, you can achieve healthy, glowing skin without the need for harsh chemicals or invasive treatments. So next time you’re in the kitchen, consider reaching for these natural ingredients to nourish and pamper your skin from the inside out. Your skin will thank you for it!
50. To keep skin moist, we can resort to some natural products except ______.
A. milk B. olive oil C. honey D. tangerine
51. For an berry-allergic old lady with sensitive skin condition, you’d better recommend ______ to be involved in her diet and daily skincare to help her preserve youth.
A. milk B. papaya C. grapes D. strawberries
52. The passage can probably be targeted at ______.
A. owners of fruit shops who wants to promote sales
B. customers in supermarket who are searching for fruits
C. women who wants to become beautiful and healthy
D. chefs who are particular about food ingredients

Many scientists are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流) for the moment. Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Esmeyer does it in a special way — by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.
Esmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn’t. Esmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world’s best areas for beachcombing (海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Esmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1,600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.
As the result of his work, Esmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.
53. The underlined phrase swap meets in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. repair rooms B. trading fairs C. business talks D. group meetings
54. Esmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out ______.
A. what caused the shipping accident
B. when and where the shoes went missing
C. whether it was all right to use their shoes
D. how much they lost in the shipping accident
55. Esmeyer is most famous for ______.
A. travelling widely the coastal cities of the world
B. making records for any lost objects on the sea
C. running a global currents research association
D. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea
56. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage
A. To call people's attention to ocean pollution.
B. To warn people of shipping safety in the ocean.
C. To explain a unique way of studying ocean currents.
D. To give advice on how to search for lost objects on the beach.

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Greatness comes from character.
B. Unfortunately, resilience matters in success.
C. Building character is a key factor in determining success.
D. When it comes to achieving success, Huang knows more than most.
E. That’s why I still worry Nvidia could ultimately fail, despite its massive success.
F. I mean that in a happy way, because you want to refine the character of your company.
Success Requires “Ample Doses of Pain”
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, has a simple message for young people who want to achieve greatness: No pain, no gain. That was essentially his message for students at his alma mater, Stanford University, where he made a speech at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
“Greatness is not intelligence, 57.______ And character isn’t formed out of smart people; it’s formed out of people who suffered,” Huang said in response to a question about how students can maximize their shot at being successful.
58.______ In 1993, he co-founded computer chip company Nvidia, where he’s served as CEO for more than three decades. The company’s success turned Huang into a billionaire. Now, with Nvidia’s chips in high demand for building AI software, it’s become one of the world’s most valuable companies with a valuation worth of $1 trillion.
“One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations,” Huang said, noting that most Stanford graduates have very high expectations as a result of having an elite education. Often people with very high expectations have very low resilience because they are not accustomed to, or prepared for, failure. “59.______ I don’t know how to teach it to you except I hope suffering happens to you,” he said. Psychologists also tend to agree that resilient people are more likely to have the strength and confidence to handle challenges and bounce back from failure. Huang certainly had to struggle in his company’s early days.
“To this day I use the phrase ‘pain and suffering’ inside our company with great joy,” Huang told the audience. “60.______ Every time we go through pain and suffering, our company becomes stronger.”
Huang explained that without tough times, companies don’t build the inner fortitude to handle hard challenges. “61.______ The world will change, and if you haven’t built resilience into your company, you’ll just collapse,” he said.
Even with Nvidia’s unprecedented success, Huang doesn’t rest easy. “62.______ It’s only a matter of time before something new comes along and replaces us,” he warned.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Endangered Species
An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more. Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered but most of them are due to humans.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution. Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of habitats and animals can no longer live there.
Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing. Animals are killed for their fur, bones or skin, or just for sport (消遣). Some seal species are now on the verge of extinction because they are killed for their fur to make coats. Tigers are shot to make medicine and tea from their bones, and crocodiles are caught to make bags and shoes. Overfishing means that large sea creatures like whales, tuna and sharks have all become endangered species, because too many are caught to make things like shark’s fin soup.
So what can individuals and governments do to protect animal and plant species from becoming endangered We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face a financial penalty (处罚). Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. If we all cooperate by taking these steps, we will protect our planet so that our children and their children can enjoy it too.

Writing 范文 (Letter to the magazine editor)
Dear editor,
I’m Li Ming, a senior three student from Mingqi High School. I partly agree with the opinion that high technology undermines people’s ability to think independently.
Admittedly, digital tools bring great convenience. However, search engines let many people rely on ready-made answers instead of thinking on their own. Short videos also make us used to instant fun, lacking patience to think deeply. Yet technology itself is neutral. It can also offer rich materials to broaden our minds if we use it wisely.
In short, technology is a double-edged sword. We should learn to control it rather than let it weaken our independent thinking.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
