Beethoven suffered from the loss of hearing, which could be the most terrible thing to happen to a musician. To overcome this problem, he used a variety of hearing aids. What is the structure of the article
It opens with the grand 1824 Vienna premiere of Symphony No.9 (the highlight of Beethoven’s life).
Then it flashes back to review his whole life: his hard childhood, early fame, and the great trouble of losing his hearing, as well as how he kept composing music.
After the flashback, it returns to analyze the four movements of Symphony No.9.
In the end, it sums up Beethoven’s extraordinary spirits and achievements, mentioning his death shortly after the concert.
In pairs, discuss the following questions.
In some texts, the events are not put exactly in time order; instead, an event that happened earlier is put in the middle of the main story, which is called flashback. You can tell you are reading a flashback when the story goes back to the past with a change of scene. There is usually a transitional sentence indicating the change.
How can you briefly introduce Beethoven's Symphony No.9 using the information in the article
Symphony No.9 was first performed in Vienna on 7 May 1824. Its four movements carry Beethoven’s life emotions: the first part is powerful and full of determination; the second and third show his sufferings and strong will. The fourth movement unites all styles into a joyful chorus. It is Beethoven’s final masterpiece and a symbol of his perseverance against deafness.
In pairs, discuss the following questions.
