Describing procedures
first/firstly/to begin with/to start with as soon as...
it is followed by.../the next step is... at the same time
in the end/finally/lastly
A: What image do you plan to create with unusual materials
B: I want to make a quiet seaside sunset picture. I will use empty coconut shells
and smooth broken sea glass I picked up on the beach.
A: That’s creative! What other materials and tools do you prepare
B: I need a thick cardboard, strong glue and a pair of small scissors.
A: Got it. Could you tell me your whole making steps
B: To begin with, I’ll break big coconut shells into small curved pieces. These pieces
will stand for rocks on the shore.

Example
B: The next step is sorting sea glass by colour. Orange and red glass will form the
sunset, while light blue glass stands for seawater. At the same time, I’ll cut thin
brown paper into tiny seaweed.
A: When will you put all parts together
B: As soon as all materials are ready, I’ll arrange them on the cardboard to build the
sunset beach scene. Lastly, I stick every piece firmly with glue.

List the things needed to make the picture. You can use a heading like "What you need",
"Things you need" or "Materials and tools".
Give well-organized directions under the heading of "What to do", "Procedures" or
"Directions". You can use numbers when listing the steps in order. Make sure to include
key points and important warnings.
Learning about the language
Make your sentences short and clear.
Use the imperative mood or passive voice in each step.
Making a seashell sunset painting
When you take a walk along the seaside, you can pick up all kinds of seashells washed up on the beach. These natural little treasures can be turned into amazing artwork. Today we will make a warm sunset seaside painting with colourful seashells of different shapes and sizes.
Materials and tools
Seashells in red, orange, blue and white
A thick piece of cardboard
Strong glue
A pair of small scissors
Directions
Step 1: Collect various seashells from the beach and sort them by colour and shape. Separate
curved orange and red shells, flat light blue shells and small white spiral shells.
Example
Step 2: Use orange and red curved shells to create the glowing sunset in the top part of
the cardboard. Flat blue shells are prepared to stand for the quiet sea surface.
Step 3: Cut a few thin paper seaweeds with scissors. Small white spiral shells will act as
little seagulls flying above the water.
Step 4: Arrange all the shells and paper seaweeds on the cardboard to form a complete
sunset seaside scene.
Step 5: Stick every seashell and paper decoration firmly onto the cardboard with glue.
Leave the work to dry fully. After that, you can show your creative seashell masterpiece to your friends and classmates!
