As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to warm their hands: hand warmers.
There is one folk story about its invention. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold, a local official asked craftsmen (工匠) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So, the hand warmer was created.
By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become popular among the common people. Skills for producing the tool were widely used in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poets from this period kept a record of people using hand warmers.
In the early days, copper (铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable than silver, iron and porcelain because it could transfer (传导) heat better, while reducing the risk of breakage or corrosion (腐蚀). Inside a hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned.
Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagonal shapes were typical, and there were also some fashioned shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters for long life.

“It can’t be done.” Boyan Slat heard this over and over when he first suggested a way to clean up millions of tons of plastic polluting our oceans.
Slat was on a diving (潜水) trip in Greece three years ago when he was troubled by plastic. “There were more plastic bags than fish,” he says. “That moment I realized it was a huge problem and that environmental problems are really the biggest problems we will face.”
That fall, Slat, then 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Slat learned that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic using ships with nets—which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the rubbish.
Slat decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered system (太阳能系统) using a moving plastic tube (管) which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to land.
Slat organized a team of volunteers for the Ocean Clean-up, which has about 100 members.
Over the next three to four years, Slat will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.

八、阅读理解
根据短文内容,从每小题所给的A、B、C三个选项中,选出一个最佳答案
Poems from Tang and Song Dynasties, operas from Yuan Dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing Dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid-Tang Dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than a spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still does not read as beautifully as it does in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay A Eulogium on a Humble Cell (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues” (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
61.Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in
A.Song. B.Tang. C.Ming.
62.How was autumn in Liu’s eyes at that time
A.He thought it was a sad time.
B.He thought autumn was a hopeful season.
C.He thought spring was better.
63.Which of the following is a feature of Liu Yuxi’s works according to the passage
A.Expressing personal feelings.
B.Describing daily life of young people.
C.Picturing blue sky and a crane.
64.How did Liu feel about living in a humble cell in the writer’s opinion
A.Strange. B.Unhappy. C.Satisfied.
65.Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important
A.To be a respectable man. B.To live in a big house. C.To wear beautiful clothes.

Before the discovery of DNA (基因) information in the 1980s, fingerprints science was the easiest way to solve serious crimes. It’s believed that each of us has our own fingerprints. But do you know that our fingerprints could show a lot about us
According to the expert, fingerprints can show lifestyle and environment, eating habits, possible medical problems and even the job of a person. So how can we work all these out from just a simple fingerprint Well, a fingerprint is formed when a finger touches a surface. Most fingerprints can’t be seen to the eye and require a chemical development process in order to make them shown.
Besides, its use could be much wider. For example, it may be helpful in the future to doctors treating their patients. A fingerprint exam may also tell a doctor whether a patient is properly taking medicine. In the treatment of some of the most serious illnesses, taking proper medicine is important.

Like many other foreigners, Rosalind Oliver’s first touch of Chinese Tai Chi came from popular kung fu movies. However, she has become a Tai Chi master herself, teaching it to both Chinese and foreigners.
Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi began in her early 20s, when her backache was always troubling her and she was turning to an exercise. Then she discovered advertisement classes about Tai Chi by accident and decided to try the “mysterious” eastern sport. Right away Oliver fell in love with the beautiful movement of Tai Chi. To her joy, she found that her back pains disappeared after years of practice.
Oliver later met her late husband, who was also her Tai Chi teacher. In the early 1990s, the couple opened their own Tai Chi school in the UK. To further understand Tai Chi, they decided to start a journey to China. However, three years after moving to Shanghai in 2000, her husband died, leaving her alone to work on Tai Chi.
The 58-year-old British woman recalled that it was a hard time for her. However, she was thankful to Chinese friends in Shanghai who supported her through the painful process. “They didn't treat me like a foreigner, but rather like a friend.” Oliver said.
In 2005, Oliver set up the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Center, which acts as a bridge for foreign people to get a better understanding of Chinese culture such as traditional Chinese medicine and Peking Opera.
Besides her Tai Chi classes, Oliver now teaches English at Shanghai University. Oliver expressed her deep love for cultural exchange and hoped to spread her work in this area.
