The World’s Most Beautiful Buildings
Architecture has always been a form of art perfected by few, yet appreciated by many. Unlike playing an instrument or writing a novel, designing and building a livable structure requires not merely imagination, but also innovative ideas and craftsmanship.
We decide to take a look at some of the most amazing buildings around the world and show just how beautiful they are. Have you ever visited any of these places
Forbidden City, China
Built from 1406 to 1420, it is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture. It was originally the palace for the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. It housed 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties and now numerous cultural treasures are displayed in it.
Vienna Opera House, Austria
In 1920, the Vienna Opera House was renamed the Vienna State Opera. At first, the structure was constructed in 1869 as part of the city’s expansion plans earlier that decade. The Neo-Renaissance structure was designed by a well-known Czech architect named Josef Hlávka.
Louvre Palace, France
This famous Parisian museum was first built in 1204 for defence, and then under Charles V it became a royal palace where most French rulers stayed when in the city. It remained an accommodation for the royal family until 1793, when most of the building was opened to the public as a museum.
Catherine Palace, Russia
This unimaginably splendid palace, constructed in 1717, was once the summer getaway of Russia’s Catherine I. Since then additions have been attached, and the shining statues on the structure’s roof were crafted using 100 kilograms of solid gold.
21. What does the author think of architecture
A. It improves the living standard of people.

Due to a rare disease, 17-year-old Noah Cervantes has difficulty using conventional toys. His mother Danielle Jackson found adapted toys online, but they cost over $100 each. She then searched for a local organization and connected with Michael Dicpinigaitis, a Cornell student who founded the Big Red Adaptive Play and Design Initiative (APDI).
The group trained students to adapt toys for children with disabilities. At first, only a few students worked on adapting toys. But since 2021, more than 100 volunteers have joined, building a large lending library available to nine local schools and recovery centers.
“It’s amazing to have people so invested in your kid gaining independence and enjoying life,” Jackson said, “You don’t realize what disabled kids miss when they can’t even dress themselves or open their own lunchboxes.”
Dicpinigaitis began this work in high school after seeing a video of a child with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) playing independently with an adapted toy. He taught himself to adapt toys and wanted to continue the service at Cornell. Recently, the group has shifted from general toy adaptation to tailoring solutions for individual needs. On March 24, they worked with Ithaca College to adapt battery-powered toy cars for four children with mobility difficulties. Jackson said the toys allowed Noah and his brothers and sisters to play together for the first time. “Before, someone had to sit with him and assist him through. Now they all do the same thing,” she said. Kelly Clark, a psychologist guiding the group, said, “We want to make sure kids with disabilities have access to everything the rest do.”
The group now designs 3D-printed aids for communication devices and daily duties. They plan to become an official Cornell Engineering team to ensure their mission continues.
24. What made Jackson turn to APDI
A. Her son’s dislike of traditional toys.
B. The prices of specially designed toys.
C. Her son’s difficulty in adapting toys.
D. The fame of Dicpinigaitis in medicine.
25. Which word can best describe Dicpinigaitis
A. Reputation-driven.
B. Profit-seeking.
C. Community-caring.
D. Detail-focused.
26. What can we learn about APDI
A. It helps children feel included.
B. It benefits the disability recovery.
C. It contributes to kids’ dependence.
D. It specializes in general adaptation.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A mother’s effort to find a tailored cure.
B. A Cornell student’s path to starting a business.
C. An approach to promoting unconventional toys.
D. An organization adapting toys for disabled kids.

Ask people for the greatest poets of all time, and William Shakespeare’s name will appear. Regarded as a “creative genius,” he stands as a symbol of literary greatness and poetic grace. Interestingly, this suggests a link between creativity and poetry.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) note, “Participating in mentally challenging activities can encourage people to break away from fixed thinking. When we read poetry, we are exercising our interpretive skills.” In their research, participants were asked to read poems in both the original form and a rewritten version. The more complicated versions created more dramatic responses in the brain. They stress that songs, greeting card messages, and books read to children also work as examples of everyday poetry that can stimulate creative thinking.
Ma gorzata Osowiecka studied how reading poetry affected creativity. The participants were divided into two groups. Individuals in the first group were distributed poems; those in the second group were tasked with non-poetic texts. Before and after the reading, participants were tested their levels of divergent (发散的) thinking. Those in the first group showed increased fluency, imagination and flexibility, while the other participants, a control group, displayed a decrease in fluency and originality.
Novelist Katrina Case notes that the creation of poetry is at the heart of her personal creativity, helping her unlock ideas and posing poetic pieces gives her “the creative boost to return to more significant projects with renewed energy.” Beverly Read, a lifelong poet and author, believes that those who write poems can create a connection between ideas and words. They give themselves the opportunity to select from millions of words to string several of them together, thus creating something vivid to be seen in the mind.
The injection (注入) of poetry into our lives, whether reading it or creating it, serves as a way of enlightening creativity when we are faced with demanding tasks in reality. Or, as our creative genius put it,
“Though this be madness,
Yet there is method in’t.”
—William Shakespeare, *Hamlet*
28. What do the researchers in MGH find
A. Children have insight into rewritten poems.
B. Complicated poems can stimulate creativity.
C. Original versions of poems are easy to digest.
D. Interpretive skills are essential to create poems.
29. Which aspect is affected most by reading poems
A. Imagination.
B. Originality.
C. Flexibility.
D. Fluency.
30. What can we learn from Katrina and Beverly
A. Composing poems benefits authors.
B. Writing fills people with energy.
C. Reading poems unlocks the emotion.
D. Turning ideas into words is hard.
31. Why does the author quote from *Hamlet*
A. To reveal reasons for madness.
B. To show respect to Shakespeare.
C. To invite people to enjoy poetry.
D. To urge readers to face the reality.
D
The Great Barrier Reef, the planet’s largest living structure, is in crisis. Its greatest threat is climate change, which has raised ocean temperatures and caused destructive coral bleaching (珊瑚白化). In 2016 and 2017 alone, roughly half the reef’s coral died, and by 2018 the total coral cover had fallen to just 14 percent.
Corals depend on a coexisting relationship with algae (海藻) that live inside their tissues and supply about 90 percent of their energy. When waters become too warm, the corals expel the algae, forcing algae to leave their tissues. This process, called coral bleaching, makes the coral lose its color and without algae, the coral simply cannot survive. Tourism, pollution, and coral-eating species also worsen the situation. To tackle the problem, scientists are making efforts with the help of robots.
Scientists first tried to control the poisonous crown-of-thorns starfish that feeds on corals. Matthew Dunbabin from Queensland University of Technology built an underwater robot named RangerBot. Using a vision system, it identifies the starfish, and delivers poisonous chemicals that will kill only the targeted species. RangerBot was a good start, but it could not address bleaching.
Dunbabin then partnered with Peter Harrison of Southern Cross University, who had long studied coral spawning (产卵). Harrison’s idea was to collect baby corals from the coral that survived bleaching events — corals likely more heat-resistant — and deliver them to damaged areas. Dunbabin bettered the RangerBot into the LarvalBot, a robot that can spread baby corals over a wide range.
In late 2018, the team gathered hundreds of millions of coral spawns from healthy, unbleached areas, fed them into LarvalBots, and used several LarvalBots to gently release them onto damaged reef zones. The hope is that these heat-tolerant corals will settle, grow to maturity, and eventually produce corals naturally. While the root cause — global warming — still demands a solution, this project aims to buy precious time for the coral to recover.
32. What does the underlined word “expel” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Absorb. B. Remove. C. Transform. D. Conserve.
33. What can we learn about the RangerBot
A. It tells targeted starfish from others.
B. It stood strong heat waves in trials.
C. It identifies other underwater robots.
D. It was invented with joint efforts.
34. How can the LarvalBot help with solving coral bleaching
A. By collecting lab-raised corals.
B. By killing coral-eating species.
C. By spotting heat-resistant spawns.
D. By spreading heat-tolerant baby corals.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Great Barrier Reef: Rise and Fall
B. Global Warming: Unseen Killer of Coral
C. Upgraded Robots: Powerful Coral Guardians
D. Dying Coral: Bleached by Heat, Saved by Algae

Kai, a Grade 11 student, spent the first week of his summer vacation with his eyes glued to his phone. He stayed up late playing games and slept until noon every day, thinking that labor work like farming was tiring and useless. His mom, worried about his lazy lifestyle, decided to send him to his Grandpa’s village to experience farm work.
Arriving at the village, Kai was filled with dissatisfaction. The dusty roads and the absence of internet service made him feel bored and annoyed. On the first morning, Grandpa took him to the vegetable garden to weed and water the plants. He bent over the rows of greens for just an hour, and his back ached badly and his palms were rubbed red. He kept complaining and wanted to go back home immediately.
He wandered around the yard aimlessly during the break, longing for the comfortable life in the city. He missed chatting with friends online and ordering tasty takeout at home. In his eyes, the quiet village had no fun at all, and every farm task seemed endless and exhausting.
Grandpa noticed his bad mood but said nothing. He just quietly finished his work and prepared fresh vegetables for lunch. The foods on the table were grown with Grandpa’s own hands, yet Kai hardly had the appetite to enjoy them.
By noon, he threw down his hoe (锄头) and sat on the ground, sweaty and frustrated. “This is meaningless! I’d rather go home and study,” he said to Grandpa angrily, refusing to continue. Grandpa didn’t scold him, but just smiled and said nothing. That night, Kai lay on the wooden bed, staring at the ceiling. He made up his mind to talk Grandpa into sending him back to the city the next day.

第二节 读后续写(约150词)
The next morning, Kai begged Grandpa to let him leave. Instead of agreeing, Grandpa took him to a small field full of ripe vegetables. He picked a crisp cucumber and handed it to Kai, telling him every fruit and vegetable needed long days of watering and weeding to grow tasty. Kai took a bite; the sweet taste surprised him. He watched Grandpa bend down to remove weeds patiently, sweat rolling down his forehead. A sense of guilt washed over Kai, realizing how hard Grandpa worked to grow food. He picked up his hoe silently and started to help.
Gradually, Kai changed his mind. He got up early every morning to work in the garden alongside Grandpa. He learned to tell different crops apart and took good care of the young plants. When resting, he listened to Grandpa’s stories about farming. He no longer missed city games or takeout. Before leaving the village, Kai thanked Grandpa sincerely. This farm experience taught him that hard work creates beauty, and he gained a new respect for labor.
