From a young age, I had needed to write as one needs to breathe, but social values convinced me that writing wasn’t worthy. “Writing won’t pay the bills,” people said. Yet chaining myself to other professions frightened me even more. So I set foot on Iceland as an exchange student, giving myself one more year to decide what to do with my life. However, after a month of living in Iceland, I was still unaccustomed. The cold wind, the unfamiliar language, and the long nights only deepened my uncertainty.
One day, in class, I started writing a poem on my notebook. Outside, Mount Tindastóll’s snowy heights were lit in pink from the late sunrise. It was as if the mountain was on fire with soft, warm light. I became so absorbed in pressing its beauty onto paper that I did not notice my teacher, Geirlaugur, until he cleared his throat and asked, “Poetry ” My face turned red. “Sorry,” I said, expecting to be told to focus on the lesson.
Geirlaugur called me to his desk the next day. I was expecting criticism, but instead he handed me a collection of Icelandic nature poems. He told me, “Keep going, and your work will be published one day. Onwards.” I was speechless. For the first time, someone had taken my writing seriously. That thin book of poems became my treasure.
From that day on, my relationship with Iceland shifted. I threw myself into reading Icelandic novels, found friendship and belonging, and realized that Icelanders respect writers. One friend told me proudly that Iceland is a nation of writers: one in ten would publish a book.
Then, far, far in the future, once there are first bases, then colonies, on Mars, comes the challenge of terraforming — making Mars like Earth. The stuff of science fiction Yes, but as we’ve seen, so much of fiction becomes fact.
I would not have become a writer were it not for Iceland. She renewed my confidence in the worthiness of writing. Her mountains remain my inspiration. And if I ever feel the old doubt creeping back, I close my eyes and hear Geirlaugur’s voice, “Onwards.”

Tiny pieces of plastic are an increasingly serious issue. Known as microplastics, they may be from clothing, kitchen tools, personal care products, and countless other everyday objects. Their durability (耐久性) makes them remain in the environment longer, even inside human bodies.
According to a new study, a large part of our microplastics may come from drinking water, as wastewater treatment plants are still not effectively removing microplastics.
Roughly 9 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced globally since plastic production began, much of which has gradually become ever-smaller pieces without truly breaking down. These small pieces are now widespread in the soil and water around the world. Wastewater treatment plants actually do remove a lot of microplastics, the new study shows, but not enough.
“What our systematic study found is that while most wastewater treatment plants greatly reduce microplastic loads, complete removal remains impossible with current technologies,” says senior author Un-Jung Kim, an environmental engineer at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). “As a result, many microplastics are released back into the environment and these microplastics and other pollutants would exist in very small quantities, but we can be influenced through simple actions like drinking water, doing laundry, or watering plants, leading to potential long-term serious human health impacts.”
Without stronger regulation of microplastics, consumers are largely left to face the effects of microplastics on ecology and human health by themselves. Armed with the right information, however, it is possible to greatly cut back on effects.
One important point to remember, for example, is that microfibers represent a large part of microplastic pollution, many of which come from clothing made of synthetic (合成的) materials. “While communities must take steps to better find and check for microplastics when testing wastewater and water quality, consumers can already help by choosing to buy clothing and fabrics with less plastic whenever possible, knowing that tiny plastic threads are the most common type of microplastics continually sent out through wastewater,” Kim says.
28. What worries the author most about microplastics
A. Their wide use in kitchen tools.
B. Their long-lasting nature and risk.
C. Their hard-to-remove characteristic.
D. Their completely unknown sources.
29. How do people take in microplastics according to Kim
A. By breathing polluted air.
B. By working at water plants.
C. By doing simple daily activities.
D. By taking them in through skin.
30. What does Kim advise consumers to do
A. To improve wastewater treatment.
B. To stop using personal care products.
C. To test water quality at home regularly.
D. To buy clothing with less plastic material.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Microplastics in drinking water.
B. Health risks from microplastics.
C. Microplastic pollution and actions.
D. Methods to avoid all microplastics.

After the Apollo Moon missions in the 1970s, sending astronauts to Mars seemed the next step, but it would be a “giant leap”. Space is big: while it took the Apollo astronauts only four days to reach the Moon, with present technology it would take about nine months to reach Mars. Clearly some more work is needed before we can send humans to Mars.
Before deciding to do such a risky journey, scientists have turned to various kinds of Earth-based simulation (模拟) where astronauts would deal with extreme environments. The latest took place in the Mars-like landscape of Hawaii, 2,500m up the side of the Mauna Loa volcano. On 28 August 2016, a group of six people came out after spending a full year there. They had been allowed out on simulated Mars walks, but only wearing a full space suit.
Mars Society president Robert Zubrin has a better mission plan in his mind. It involves first launching an unmanned Earth Return Vehicle (ERV) that would land on Mars and use solar or nuclear power to produce methane and oxygen from Martian CO . This means that humans would set out only once they knew there would be a fuelled return vehicle waiting for them on Mars. A second ERV would be launched at the same time to provide back-up and, if all goes well, would be ready to bring the next team home two years later. In this way, a series of return trips would build up a number of living spaces on Mars for longer stays in the future. And because most of the fuel for the return trip would be made on Mars, Zubrin believes huge energy and cost savings could be made.
Then, far, far in the future, once there are first bases, then colonies, on Mars, comes the challenge of terraforming — making Mars like Earth. The stuff of science fiction Yes, but as we’ve seen, so much of fiction becomes fact.
32. Why does the author mention the Apollo Moon missions
A. To argue that Mars is easy to reach.
B. To show the Moon trip was successful.
C. To compare Earth with other planets.
D. To highlight the challenge of a Mars trip.
33. What do we know about the team of six in Hawaii
A. They practiced living in a closed environment.
B. They designed new spacesuits for future trips.
C. They discovered a new kind of energy source.
D. They completed a true space flight successfully.
34. What is Zubrin’s suggestion about Mars exploration
A. Sending humans to Mars at any cost.
B. Producing fuel for the return on Mars.
C. Asking astronauts to walk freely on Mars.
D. Building more homes before sending humans.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward sending humans to Mars
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Supportive.

When I was sixteen, I worked in fast food. And I hated it.
Buses always arrived right before closing time. Kids hurried off, messing up the once spotless lobby (大厅), so I had to clean it all over again. The work took up my entire day, yet I was paid very little in return.
Then I was assigned to work at the drive-through (汽车外卖窗口). The non-stop dinging in my ear would drive me crazy. Noisy vehicles hurt my ears, drowning out the voice of the person who was ordering. Some people spoke so softly that I assumed they were talking to each other. Yet later, they yelled at me because I failed to respond. There were also people who were talking among themselves when ordering and got mad at me when I asked them to check their orders. Some people left their radios on, which also drowned out their voices. Others, with an unpleasant smell of smoke, came to the window, talking rudely, and shouting at their family members. They changed their orders many times but still blamed me for getting their orders wrong.
I gradually became afraid of going to work, feeling unhappy the moment I got to work, and even lost my temper easily after work. Soon I realized this situation couldn’t last. Nothing would change unless I changed myself.
I had two choices: either feel terrible all day and hate my life, or find a way to stay positive at work. So I decided that for just one day, I would say something nice to everyone who came to my drive-through window.

第一节 书信范文
Dear Peter,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 2 student.
I strongly recommend paper-cutting for your students. It is a vivid folk art full of lucky cultural meanings. Simple paper patterns carry wishes for health and happiness, easy for foreigners to understand and create. Besides, the tools are light and safe, unlike heavy writing brushes for calligraphy. They can take their own cuttings home as special souvenirs.
Hope you will like my suggestion.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写范文
Honestly, it was easier said than done. When the first customer rolled up, my throat tightened and I hesitated for seconds before forcing a warm compliment. Several customers stared at me in surprise, confused by my sudden kindness. I kept reminding myself to keep going, greeting every visitor with sincere praise no matter how tired I felt.
The most amazing thing of all, though, wasn’t my own reaction, but theirs. Most people smiled widely and replied with warm words in return. Some even thanked me sincerely and became gentle while ordering. That day ended without any quarrels. I realized kindness is mutual; a little warmth can totally turn a tough job into a pleasant experience.
