Louisa May Alcott’s father was a philosopher and teacher. She grew up in a family with strong intellectual and idealistic values. Alcott faced financial instability due to her father’s impractical ideas. Despite financial hardships, she had a vivid imagination and a passion for writing. Her first well-known work, Little Women, was an immediate hit and brought her into the spotlight of American literature.
The 19th-century America witnessed significant social and economic changes. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing, bringing about urbanization and a shift in the social structure. The gap between the rich and the poor widened, issues like women’s rights, labor conditions, and family values became noticeable. Little Women, well-received on its publication, covered these themes, exploring the lives of four sisters as they navigated love, friendship, career aspirations, and personal growth in a changing society.
The most common literary form in 19th-century America was the novel, and Little Women illustrated many of its key characteristics. It had a strong focus on domestic life and the emotional journeys of its characters. The narrative was simple yet profound, capturing the essence of human relationships and the struggles of ordinary people. It also carried elements of realism, describing the everyday challenges faced by women and families during that era.
The Alcott family became a notable presence in the literary world as Louisa May Alcott, along with some of her sisters, contributed to the literary scene. Louisa published under her own name, a bold choice given the societal limits on women’s careers at the time. Her sisters, too, were involved in artistic pursuits, though not as prominently as Louisa.

A. She grew up in a wealthy and carefree family.

B. It was supported by renowned publishers.
C. It reflected important social issues of its time.
D. It was a fictional story with no basis in reality.
26. Which characteristic of Little Women fits with the 19th-century US novels
A. An emphasis on grand, unrealistic adventures.
B. A rejection of showing family and domestic scenes.
C. A focus on the internal lives and relationships of characters.
D. A preference for using difficult-to-understand language.
27. What can be the suitable title for the passage
A. Group Identity: Its Hidden Benefits.
B. Age Groups: Key Comparisons.
C. Social Labels: Their Hidden Harm.

Nowadays, online reviews are everywhere. We’re often asked to leave a review after making a purchase, dining out, or receiving a service. Many of us not only leave reviews but also value those from others. In fact, 98% of consumers consider reviews an essential part of the decision-making process, and 45% of users won’t buy a product without any reviews.
However, what impact does this culture of online reviews have on our brains and lives Take Helen Plicony as an example. Her low rating makes her feel anxious every time she takes a ride, even though she believes she has done nothing wrong. Businesses are also significantly affected by online reviews. Sam Morgan, who runs several restaurants, was once blackmailed (敲诈) by cheaters who threatened to post negative reviews if he didn’t pay up. Such malicious reviews can be a real headache for businesses. Moreover, review platforms often don’t get immediately or conduct strict reviews when dealing with such issues.
Of course, online reviews aren’t all bad. Before buying clothes or other products, we often refer to reviews to learn about the product’s style, fabric, and size. Reviews can reduce our anxiety about unknown experiences to some extent. Also, constructive feedback can help businesses to make improvements. For example, if a buyer points out that the packaging is not strong enough, the seller may rethink their packaging method.
Nevertheless, the truth of online reviews has always been a concern. False reviews are widespread, and AI-generated reviews are common. They usually lack emotion and clear opinions. To solve this, the UK has introduced relevant laws to ban the submission of fake reviews.
Online reviews have both advantages and disadvantages. While we enjoy the convenience they bring, we also need to learn to distinguish between true and false reviews and view these evaluations rationally.
28. What is the purpose of listing the statistics in paragraph 1
A. To explain consumers’ choices before shopping.
B. To show buyers’ preference for getting a service.
C. To clarify these good and bad effects of reviews.
D. To highlight the importance of online comments.
29. What does the underlined word “malicious” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Casual. B. Harmful. C. Honest. D. Positive.
30. What does the UK do to fight against false online reviews
A. Make related laws to forbid fake reviews.
B. Stop users making AI-generated reviews.
C. Ask the platforms to check false reviews.
D. Warn the public not to post false reviews.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards online reviews
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
D
Parents who find themselves annoyed by their children’s fussy eating (挑食) cheer up: the refusal to eat a broader range of foods largely results from genes rather than parenting, according to scientists.
Researchers investigated eating habits in toddlers (幼儿) to teenagers and found that on average fussiness over food changed little from 16 months to 13 years old. When they looked into the factors of fussy eating, DNA arose as the major factor. Genetic variation in the population explained 60% of the differences in pickiness at 16 months, rising to 74% and more from 3 to 13 years old, the study found, suggesting that eating only a narrow range of foods and frowning at the prospect of trying something new result from nature rather than parenting.
Other factors that influence fussy eaters come from the environment, such as sitting down to eat as a family and the kinds of foods consumed by the people around them. Nas, a behavioral geneticist, and her colleagues analyzed data from the UK Gemini study, which registered 2,400 sets of twins to explore how genetics and the environment affect childhood growth. As part of the study, parents completed questionnaires on their children’s eating habits at 16 months and again at three, five, seven and 13 years old.
To work out how much genetics contributes to fussy eating and how much is down to environmental factors, the researchers compared the eating habits of identical twins (同卵双胞胎) and non-identical twins. While identical twins share 100% of their genes, non-identical twins share only half. They describe how fussy eating habits were more similar among identical twins than non-identical twins, proving that genetics largely strengthened differences in pickiness.
Dr Alison Fildes, a co-author of the study, said: “Although fussy eating has a strong genetic factor and can continue beyond early childhood, this doesn’t mean it is fixed. Parents can support their children to eat a wide variety of foods throughout childhood and into teens.”
32. What’s the main factor for children’s fussing eating according to the scientists
A. Genes. B. Friends. C. Parenting. D. Environment.
33. How did Nas and her colleagues conduct the study
A. By observing children’s eating behavior.
B. By completing questionnaires for parents.
C. By comparing different twins’ eating habits.
D. By analyzing data from the UK Gemini study.
34. What is the advice for parents of fussy eaters
A. Focus only on genetic factors.
B. Encourage trying different foods.
C. Force children to eat various foods.
D. Accept that picky eating cannot change.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. Friends’ Effect on Eating Patterns.
B. The Main Reason behind Fussy Eating.
C. Parenting and Children’s Eating Habits.
D. Ways to Change Children’s Eating Habits.

The train was waiting at a station. The baggage master was busy with his checks. The passengers were rushing for the cars (火车车厢), anxious to get seats before pulling away.
A man, carelessly dressed, was standing on the station platform, seemingly giving little attention to what’s going on. At a quick glance, one might have easily supposed that he’s a hobo (流浪汉) of neither wealth nor influence.
I, as a conductor, gave him a contemptuous (轻蔑的) look, and called out, “Hello, hobo! Better get aboard, or the train will leave you behind.” The man made no reply. As the train started to move, the man climbed on the last car and took a seat.
The train had gone a few miles when I appeared at the door of the car where passengers were sitting. Passing along taking tickets, I soon discovered him.
“Your ticket, quick,” I said.
“I don’t pay,” replied the man quietly.
“Don’t pay ” I said.
“No, sir,” replied the man again.
“We’ll see about that. I shall put you off at the next station,” I said rudely and seized his suitcase.
“Better not be so rough, young man,” returned one stranger.
I released the bag momentarily and, seeing that he could do no more, passed on to check other passengers’ tickets. As I stopped at a seat a few paces off, another stranger who had heard the conversation asked me whether I knew that man to whom I was speaking and told me he was Peter Warburton, the president of the road.
I asked him whether it was real, trying to cover up my worry. And he said yes.
My face became red, but with a strong effort, I controlled myself and continued checking tickets as usual.
Meanwhile, Mr Warburton sat quietly. Nobody could interpret the expression on his face or tell what his next movement would be. He could get me fired simply. Would he do it
续写开头:
My heart raced as I approached Mr Warburton.

Class Farm Plots in Our School
Our school has built small farm plots for each class, where students can grow vegetables and flowers after class.
This project brings two obvious benefits. First, it lets us get close to nature and learn basic farming skills outside textbooks. Besides, taking care of plants as a team improves our cooperation and sense of responsibility.
It’s a great relaxing activity. Come and take part in it!
第二节 读后续写范文
My heart raced as I approached Mr Warburton. I lowered my head and apologized sincerely for my rude words and prejudice just now, fully ready to accept any punishment. Unexpectedly, he smiled gently and told me he wouldn’t report me. He said everyone deserves equal respect no matter how they dress.
Hearing that, I was ashamed and determined to make a change. From that day on, I treated every passenger politely without judging their appearance. I learned never to look down on others by their looks, and always keep respect in my heart.
