When you walk through a forest, you might think the trees are silent. But scientists have discovered that trees actually “talk” to each other. They communicate through an underground network of fungi (真菌网) that connects their roots. This network is sometimes called the “Wood Wide Web.”
How does it work When a tree is attacked by insects, it sends chemical signals through the network to warn its neighbors. The nearby trees then produce chemicals that make their leaves taste bad, so insects won’t eat them. Some trees even send nutrients (养分) to sick or young trees through the network.
A scientist named Dr. Suzanne Simard discovered this amazing system. She found that mother trees—the oldest and largest in the forest—help their small young trees by sending them sugar and other nutrients. This shows that trees are not competitors—they are a group that supports each other.
This discovery changes how we think about forests. A forest is not just a number of separate single trees. It is a living whole group where every member matters. When one tree is in trouble, others come to help.
So next time you walk in a forest, remember that many trees around you are passing news secretly. The trees are talking to each other, sharing information, and helping each other survive. It’s a wonderful example showing how smart nature is.

The Temple of Heaven, a symbol of Beijing’s culture, appears everywhere—on subway cards, hotel logos, and even the Tiantan Award at the Beijing Film Festival. In 1998, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site (联合国教科文组织世界遗产), praised as a treasure of ancient Chinese building and wisdom.
It was built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty. Emperors here wished for good crops and peace for the country for almost 500 years. It is located along Beijing’s Central Axis and follows the “round heaven, square earth” idea—round roofs for the sky, square bottoms for the earth. Blue glazed tiles (琉璃瓦) cover its buildings, symbolizing the heavens.
Its most famous building is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. It has 28 huge wooden pillars (柱子) in three circles. The 4 inner pillars mean the four seasons. The 12 middle pillars stand for the 12 months of a year. The 12 outer pillars stand for the 12 parts of a day in old Chinese time. All of them also fit the 24 solar terms and 28 star groups in old Chinese science.
Today, the Temple of Heaven is more than history—it’s a bridge between cultures. Visitors from around the world come to enjoy its beauty and learn about China’s ancient values. It shows how clever and thoughtful ancient Chinese people were. It also tells us to save and protect this valuable old heritage.
