二、Teaching objectives
1. Language Competence
Master useful expressions and sentence patterns for offering advice, and recognize the fixed layout of a formal letter of advice in the sample passage.
Distinguish various cohesive words to arrange suggestions; use soft, polite language to comfort peers with teenage troubles in written sentences.
Accurately state one’s worries and give targeted advice, and write a complete coherent letter following the standard letter-writing format.
2. Thinking Quality
Classify typical teenage dilemmas in study, friendship and hobbies, and analyze the root causes behind different students' growing confusion logically.
Assess the practicality of each piece of advice in the text, compare different solutions and form objective personal thinking on problem-solving.
Think creatively to design reasonable and feasible advice for peer troubles and cultivate logical expression in persuasive writing.
3. Learning Ability
Independently summarize the writing structure of advice letters by analyzing the sample text and sort out functional sentence patterns for accumulation.
Communicate and brainstorm troubles and solutions with group members, and learn to revise writing drafts by exchanging feedback with partners.
Apply learned writing structures and expressions to finish independent writing tasks, and check errors according to self-assessment checklists.
4. Cultural Awareness
Discover that teenagers in China and Western countries face similar growth troubles and respect shared emotional needs of adolescent groups worldwide.
Experience Western polite communication norms of giving gentle suggestions in private letters and learn sincere caring manners between peers.
Form a positive attitude towards teenage difficulties, and realize mutual encouragement is a valuable virtue in both Eastern and Western youth cultures.
三、Teaching points
(一)Teaching key points
Grasp the complete structure of a letter of advice, including the greeting, background statement, detailed advice and polite closing remarks.
Memorize and flexibly use functional sentence patterns and linking words to politely put forward suggestions and comfort worried teenagers.
Organize clear paragraphs and write complete, logical letters with targeted advice for specific teenage life problems.
(二)Teaching difficult points
Select mild, persuasive language instead of commanding tones to show sincere care when giving advice to troubled classmates.
Arrange several pieces of advice in reasonable logic and use cohesive devices to achieve natural smoothness between paragraphs.

修正:I wonder if you could expand the library and update more reading materials.

Dear friend,
I'm sorry to hear that you are troubled by ________. I totally understand your feelings and I'm writing to give you some practical advice.
It is common for teenagers to have such problems. However, if you ignore them, they will have a bad influence on your study and daily life.
First of all, I recommend that you ________. It can help you ________. Besides, why not ________ In this way, you can ________. What's more, you'd better ________, which is good for you.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful to you. Wish you a better life.
All the best,
Li Hua
②Ask the students to use what they have learnt to write a letter of advice to one of the teenagers below. (Activity 3)
Sample:
10 September 2018
Dear Xu Ting,
You wrote that you always feel lonely after school because your parents work in another city. I understand how you feel. It is common for teenagers to feel lonely when they live away from their parents.
I think you can try joining a volunteer group that helps other people. This will give you a chance to meet and be around others. It will also help you realise that you are not alone in having problems and that many other people have problems, too. Helping other people also makes us feel better. You can also connect with your parents online. Just because your parents are far away, it doesn't mean you can't talk to them. I'm sure that you'll make new friends and get a chance to speak to your parents more often. This will help drive away your loneliness.
Best wishes,
Susan Luo
