Let’s take a look at how a great translator learned English.
Original English Translation (by Xu Yuanchong)
生当作人杰， 死亦为鬼雄。 Be man of men while you’re alive;
And soul of souls if you’re dead.
无边落木萧萧下， 不尽长江滚滚来。 The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower;
The endless river rolls its waves hour after hour.
中华儿女多奇志， 不爱红装爱武装。 Most Chinese daughters have a desire strong;
To face the powder, and not to powder the face.
Let’s take a look at how a great translator learned English.
Those classic lines were translated by Xu Yuanchong, a translation master in China. He was best known for his translations of ancient Chinese poems.
Surprisingly, this great translator wasn’t good at English at first. In primary school, he often failed English tests. His interest in English started from stamp collecting in high school. Later, his teacher asked him to read English works, including dramas and speeches. That made him discover the beauty of language.
He went to the National Southwest Association University to study English in 1938. Until his death in 2021, he had published more than 150 translation works, dedicating his life to bridging Chinese and foreign cultures.
Let’s take a look at how a great translator learned English.

Well, I have some good ways! First, I read extra classic novels after school, like Journey to the West. It helps me learn beautiful expressions. I also write reading notes to record my thoughts about the books. Practising actively is the key to learning Chinese well.
