Thirty-two-year-old Ethan had spent a decade building his career as a software
engineer in the city, but burnout and loneliness had left him feeling lost. When his
favorite childhood watch — gifted by his father who passed away when he was 12
— stopped working, he didn’t just see a broken timepiece; he saw the last real link to
the man who’d taught him to fix things with patience.
Desperate to repair it, Ethan searched online and found “Maggie’s Repair Shop,”
a tiny store in a quiet neighborhood on the city’s outskirts. Unlike the modern tech
shops he was used to, Maggie’s was filled with tools, old-fashioned clocks, and
第 1 页 /共 7 页
photos of strangers’ cherished items. Maggie, a silver-haired woman in her 60s,
smiled as she took the watch. “This one has stories,” she said, turning it over in her
hands. “Give me a week.”
Ethan visited every evening after work, not just to check on the watch, but to
escape his stressful job. He watched Maggie repair a faded quilt, a chipped ceramic
mug, and a rusted bicycle, listening as customers shared stories of their items —
gifts from loved ones, mementos of important moments. “Fixing things isn’t just
about parts,” Maggie told him one night. “It’s about honoring what they mean to
people.”
On the seventh day, Maggie handed him the watch. It ticked steadily, its leather
strap polished. “I added a tiny engraving on the back,” she said. Ethan flipped it over
— there was his father’s favorite quote: “Patience mends more than metal.” As he
thanked her, a couple came in with a broken music box, and Ethan found himself
offering to help Maggie sand its wooden case.
Weeks later, Ethan quit his high-pressure job and became Maggie’s part-time
assistant. He learned to repair small items, listened to customers’ stories, and slowly
rediscovered joy in the quiet, meaningful work. The watch hadn’t just been fixed-it
had led him to a life that felt rooted, not rushed. Sometimes, he realized, the things we
try to repair end up repairing us.
24. Why was the watch so important to him
A. It was an expensive antique timepiece.
B. It was a precious gift from his late father.
C. It had helped him get through hard workdays.
D. It was the only thing left from his childhood home.
25. What can we infer about Maggie from the passage
A. She began to fix the watch a week later.
B. She used to run a modern technology store.
C. She understands the emotional value of objects.
D. She repairs items only for close friends and family.
26. Why did Ethan start visiting Maggie’s Repair Shop every evening
A. He hoped to learn repair skills from Maggie.
B. He needed to finish his work in a quiet place.
C. He was asked to help Maggie with daily operations.
D. He wanted to ask about the watch and relax himself.
27. What is the best title for the passage
A. A Broken Watch and a Mended Heart
B. An Experience of Repairing Valuable Items
C. A Father’s Quote That Changed Everything
D. Leaving a High-Pressure Job for Friendship
C
Have you ever worried that your life is a little ... ordinary You can’t stand the
thought of being average but, somehow, no matter how much you achieve, it never
seems like enough. If this sounds familiar, you may have a touch of “koinophobia”:
the fear of being ordinary.
“The fear of being ordinary is often rooted in the belief that we need to be
‘extraordinary’ to be loved and accepted by others,” says psychologist Rachel Vora.
Social media has undeniably worsened the problem. With high-flying careers and
picture-perfect holidays constantly presented as the norm, we can put pressure on
ourselves to achieve more of the same.
第 2 页 /共 7 页
So, if the fear of being ordinary threatens to disturb your peace, how can you get
it under control Rachel believes it starts with internal recognition. “When we place
more value on the internal, we are less likely to attach our self-worth to external
achievements,” Rachel points out. Focusing on internal recognition means
appreciating your born value, and realizing how you make the world a better place,
simply by being you.
It’s at this point that getting to know yourself and understanding what you
actually want from life is key. “Being a businessman or travelling the world would
not make everyone happy,” Rachel notes. “So, it’s important to separate expectations
on social media from your sense of self and know what would truly make you happy.”
Ultimately, Rachel says, it’s important to remember that being extraordinary will
not increase your feelings of self-worth. You might assume that once you have
reached a certain level of success you’ll finally feel like you have value. But that’s not
the case and, Rachel says, once we truly accept this, we are more likely to look for the
value in an ordinary life. Remember this: on a clear, cloudless night, you don’t have
to climb the highest peak to be able to see the stars.
28. What is the underlying cause for koinophobia
A. The need for social media popularity. B. The pursuit of being recognized.
C. The pressure from family and friends. D. The lack of a colorful lifestyle.
29. What does Rachel suggest as the first step to overcome koinophobia
A. Pursuing ordinary lifestyles. B. Focusing on your achievements.
C. Appreciating your own value. D. Seeking help from others.
30. What does Rachel emphasize in paragraph 4
A. The value of having business sense.
B. The impact of chasing social media trends.
C. The role of achieving extraordinary success.
D. The significance of knowing your true desires.
31. What does the underlined part “to see the stars” symbolize
A. To achieve ambitious goals. B. To meet social expectations.
C. To stand out from the crowd. D. To find the meaning of life.

The number of people living with Parkinson’s disease globally has doubled in
the past 25 years, yet the treatment and monitoring of the disease seem many decades
behind. Clinicians typically judge the severity of the disease using subjective rating
scales (等级), and a shortage of doctors trained to treat Parkinson’s means that people
can go months — or years — between clinic visits. This leaves patients in a
troubling spot, often unsure how quickly their disease is advancing.
To address this issue, Stanford Medicine researchers have developed a simple,
portable device called the KeyDuo to help patients track their symptoms (症状) from
home.
The idea came from treating performing artists with dystonia, a muscle disorder
that musicians can develop. Researchers initially created a computerized keyboard to
measure dystonia symptoms, and a pianist with Parkinson’s disease happened to try it.
He did the test one day while he was on his Parkinson’s medicines and another day
when he was off his medicines. The researchers realized they could tell the difference
based on the keyboard data.
The critical difference between this device and other keyboards is that it has
tension-engineered levers (杠杆), detecting how hard someone is pressing, the speed
第 3 页 /共 7 页
at which the lever moves, and exactly how far down it moves. Patients perform
repetitive finger pressing on the levers for 30 seconds, and the device creates an
assessment in real-time for the physician to view and make treatment-adjusting
decisions.
Patients can stay at home for monitoring and take the device with them wherever
they go. It’s light and fits in the hand. Once it is paired with a mobile app on a
smartphone or tablet, the test can be done anywhere, anytime, with the results sent to
doctors in real time.
Recent research showed that after tracking eight patients for 30 days, the device
effectively monitored how symptoms changed with medication. It is hoped that this
kind of continuous monitoring system will allow people to manage their medicines
more carefully and allow healthcare providers to look after people between these rare
visits.
32. Which is one of the challenges faced by Parkinson’s patients according to
paragraph 1
A. High cost of treatment. B. Unreasonable clinic rules.
C. Unclear disease progression. D. Overuse of medications.
33. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A. Share the origin of the keyboard.
B. Describe the symptoms of Parkinson’s.
C. Highlight the complexity of Parkinson’s.
D. Stress the role of musicians in the research.
34. What makes the KeyDuo special
A. It can direct hand movements. B. It can sense hand press features.
C. It can strengthen finger muscles. D. It can improve hand flexibility.
35. Which aspect of the KeyDuo does the author focus on in paragraph 5
A. Its potential use. B. Its main components.
C. Its major benefits. D. Its testing accuracy.

How to Make the Most of Your Weekends
We cherish our weekends. 36 How many times have you found
yourself eagerly anticipating the weekend, only to be left disappointed because it went
by too fast If you want to enjoy weekends that leave you feeling refreshed and
energized, then here is what you can do.
Change your mindset
Can you change how satisfied you are with your weekends just by changing your
mindset ____37____ In a study, they found that those who had treated their weekend
as a vacation were significantly happier than those who had treated it as a regular
weekend. That is, your mindset is more important than the amount of money you
spend or the activities themselves.
Change your approach
After you’ve changed your mindset, here are a few practical ways that you can
make the most of your weekend.
Start with a plan. According to researchers, you should plan your weekend just
as you plan your weekdays. 38 If not, you will end up doing nothing and
then wonder where the time went once the weekend is over.
第 4 页 /共 7 页
Avoid routine. We live our lives mainly by routine Monday through Friday. If we’
re not careful though, the familiarity of our patterns can easily lead us to become
stuck in a rut of only doing the same things over and over again. The weekend is a
good time to force ourselves to step out of our comfort zone. 39
40 Filling your time with different activities can be fun, but to the
extreme, it can also cause harm both mentally and physically. Therefore, make sure to
set aside some time just for yourself so you can recharge your batteries, such as
reading a favorite book. Avoid filling up your empty time with things that are not
relaxing.
A. Researchers say yes.
B. Develop suitable hobbies.
C. Allow for some downtime.
D. But unexpected things will happen and ruin our holidays.
E. More often than not, however, they don’t live up to our expectations.
F. You should start the weekend knowing what you want to get out of it.
G. You can do this by trying new experiences, joining a new club, or revisiting a
hobby.

Mike Harris was grabbing envelopes from his mailbox when his fingers brushed
against something unexpectedly soft. Inside sat a cute rabbit toy with a sticky note,
“Bunny needs a place to play. Your mailbox looks perfect.”
Mike called his wife Clara, “Our mailbox has a new guest.” Clara came out,
smiling at the little rabbit before noticing their water bill beneath it. “But this is not a
toy house. We might miss important bills.” The couple had built the mailbox three
years ago. Mike, a retired toy maker, designed it like a small white cottage (小屋 )
with a red roof, measuring and cutting each piece of wood with the same precision he
once used for children’s toys. Clara painted dancing flowers on the sunny yellow door
hoping to make passing children smile.
“What if the ‘owner’ decides to move in more things ” Clara wondered. Mike
gently straightened the rabbit’s ear. “Someone treasured this,” he murmured, “Let’s
find out who it belongs to first.”
The next day, Mike showed a photo of the rabbit to his neighbors. No one
recognized it until Mrs. Bennet said, “I saw a little girl with pigtails (辫子) by your
mailbox yesterday. She looked around nervously before placing something inside. I
think she’s from the new apartments on Elm Street. Poor thing — there’s no
playground there, not even any play equipment.”
Mike didn’t ask further. Instead of removing the rabbit, he taped a colorful note
to the mailbox, “Bunny is welcome here.” Soon, more toys joined the rabbit —
always in the afternoon hours when school ended.
Weeks passed. The collection of playthings grew, leaving little room for mail.
One evening, Clara found a new note in pink crayon, “Dear friends, Bunny really
wants a toy swing (秋千) . I tried to make one but failed. Can you help — Emma.”
Clara’s eyes grew soft, a forgotten sense of childhood wonder bubbling up inside her.
“This isn’t just a mailbox anymore; it’s a secret play world.” she said. “I almost feel
like we’re part of it.” Mike nodded, “Tomorrow, let’s join in.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
The next afternoon, Mike and Clara hid nearby with a small surprise.
Learning Emma’s wish, the couple decided to build a toy cottage.
