Have you ever noticed how many popular expressions borrow from art A job well done is described as a “masterpiece” or “work of art.” Healthy people are described as “the picture” of health. Even moods are associated with colors of the artist’s palette. “Julia, you are still a scientist. You will always be a scientist.”
Those were the words spoken by my mentor, Professor Jenny Martin, as I told her my thoughts and feelings on leaving the bench to follow a career in science writing.
My passion for science dates back to high school. In my final years of high school, I had worked out which subjects I liked best — I chose three science subjects and two maths subjects. I loved that there was always the “right answer” in science. So I applied for an undergraduate science degree. In my third year, I sat down to a lecture given by Professor Jenny Martin. Her research sounded like a cool mix of computational work and working at the lab bench. It was then that I had my aha moment. A research career!
However, about ten years later, things started to change. My research career was going pretty well, but I wasn’t happy. I enjoyed reading and writing about science, but failed experiment after failed experiment was getting me down. I knew clearly I had to do something. Upon voicing my frustrations to a coworker in New Zealand, she suggested medical writing. She knew someone who had felt the same way as me, and who now works from home as a medical writer.
It sounded perfect: I would be able to use my science background, but step out of the lab and have some control. I excitedly started applying for jobs. My heart was saying yes!
Through a chance meeting with the communications manager, volunteering for a while, and having perseverance, I finally got a job in my university’s communications department. Here, I tried my hand at all types of writing: from media releases to annual reports. I am still engaged with science, but finally feel I am doing something I am good at.
And Jenny is right; I will forever be a scientist — just one who has found a slightly different niche (合适的工作).

39. What does the author say about her current career
A.It’s a good fit for her.
B.It’s challenging but interesting.

Eight in 10 homes that are at high risk of flooding in England are now in towns and cities, according to new analysis by the National Housing Federation (NHF) (英国国家房屋协会). Research found that 839,000 homes in urban areas are now classed at high risk of surface water flooding, a threefold increase since 2018.
Alistair Smyth, the director of policy and research at the NHF, said: “With surface water flooding a fast-growing threat in towns and cities, this poses a direct risk to people and families living in social housing…”
“Our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure (基础设施) can handle and social housing residents are more exposed, less protected and least able to absorb the financial shock when floods hit. While housing associations operating in higher-risk areas are investing significant time and resource into protecting residents, this is a national risk that needs a national response.” he added.
According to the Environment Agency (EA), a home is considered to be “high risk” when it has at least a one in 30 chance of being flooded each year. Extreme rainfall, ageing infrastructure and rapid urbanization are all making the problem worse.
Chief executive of National Flood Forum Charity, Tracy Garrett said, “Every week we hear from people whose homes have been inundated with dirty water, often containing sewage (污水), and many have been flooded multiple times,” adding that there was a growing concern that those in rented or social housing and on lower incomes were hit hardest. They had “the least ability to adapt or protect their homes”, she said. “Many are experiencing repeated flooding, with little clarity on who is responsible for fixing the problem or how long-term solutions will be delivered.
Paul Warburton, group director of housing services at Torus housing association, which owns Hoyles’s home, said they spent 500,000 dealing with that one flood, only a few years after one in the same area. “Half a million pounds — that’s a lot of new bathrooms we could have installed, new homes we could’ve built,” he said, adding: “If this keeps happening we’re probably going to end up with about 100 properties (房产) that no one wants to live in, and then what do we do with them ”
41. According to Alistair Smyth, why is surface water flooding a national risk that needs a national response
A.Because infrastructure is changing faster than the climate.
B.Because climate change is slowing down with government intervention.
C.Because housing associations have refused to invest in flood protection.
D.Because social housing residents are the least able to afford the cost of floods.
42. According to the Environment Agency (EA), when is a home considered to be at “high risk” of flooding
A.When it is located in an area with extreme rainfall.
B.When it has been flooded at least once in the past year.
C.When it has at least a 1 in 30 chance of being flooded each year.
D.When it is built on aging infrastructure without proper protection.
43. What does the underlined word “inundated” in paragraph 5 most likely mean
A.flooded B.washed C.covered D.repaired
44. What can be inferred from Paul Warburton’s words in the last paragraph
A.Residents are fully responsible for protecting their homes from floods.
B.Repeated flooding may make some properties unlivable and unsellable.
C.The flood damage cost was relatively small compared to their annual budget.
D.Housing associations prefer to build new homes rather than repair flooded ones.
45. What is the best title for the passage
A.The Climate Change in the United Kingdom.
B.The Rapid Growth of Social Housing in English Cities.
C.The Solution of Housing Associations to Flood Problems.
D.The Increasing Flood Risk to Homes in England and its Impact.

When I was a kid about twelve years old, I was already as tall as I am now, and I had a lot of freckles (雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to look at myself in the mirror, and I felt down. I had a cousin who had a flawless peaches-and-cream skin. I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be different if I had beautiful skin too — skin that was all one color.
And then, I found an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. Finally, my package came. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. I spread the cream all over my body. However, instead of developing a peaches-and-cream skin, I just got more and darker freckles. When I saw myself in the mirror, I burst into tears and hid in the bathroom.
My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. I was still crying when my grandfather came to see what was wrong with me. I tried to explain why I didn’t want to have freckles and why I felt so inadequate when I compared my appearance with my cousin. He looked at me in great surprise, shook his head, and said,” But child, there are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful.” I said, “I’ve never seen a flower with freckles!” and ran back to my room, banging the door.
When my mother came and knocked, I told her to go away. She started to say the kinds of things that parents say at times like that, but my grandfather said,” Nancy, leave the child alone.” She was a grown-up, but he was her father. So mum left me alone.
I don’t know where Grandpa found it. It isn’t at all common in the mountains where we lived then. But I know he put it in my room because my mother told me later. I had cried myself to sleep that night, and when I opened my swollen, sticky eyes the next morning, the first thing I saw, lying on the pillow next to my head, was a tiger lily.

An Amazing Artwork
Among all artworks, I love The Starry Night painted by Vincent van Gogh most. It was created in 1889 during his stay in a mental hospital.
The painting shows a magical night sky filled with rolling, bright blue and yellow clouds and glowing stars. The thick, vivid brushstrokes make the whole sky seem to be moving. The quiet village under the sky forms a sharp contrast with the wild, energetic sky above.
This painting touches me deeply. Van Gogh poured all his feelings into the canvas even when he suffered great pain. It tells me that art is a perfect way to release inner emotions. It also teaches me that beauty can be found even in hard and lonely days. I will always cherish the power this amazing painting brings me.
