DracaenaThe green and yellow pattern on its leaves looks great. It can grow to be around 10 feet tall. Just make sure you keep the soil surface dry between your watering periods because it gets influenced by too much water. Also, having this plant around a dog can be dangerous. It can be poisonous to dogs if they eat it. Australian PineA perfect “living decoration” to add in your house, it is good to look at and has a comforting feel. It can also serve as the perfect Christmas tree. It grows around 10 feet tall indoors. Remember that it requires plenty of light and fresh air. Otherwise, it becomes weak and an easy target for mites (螨虫).
Peperomia It is little in size, with long leaves. It adds energy to your living room and creates a comforting environment. As it’s not a very tall plant, you needn’t worry about how much space it will take up. The plant likes a dry surface of the soil. Grape IvyIf you want something off the ceiling (天花板), this houseplant is the one for you. It’s a climbing plant, and it will make for a beautiful hanging basket decoration. The plant is full of life wherever it is hung. It needs to be kept wet in all its parts for good growth.
A houseplant is pretty to look at and brings fresh air to your home. Besides, looking after a plant will give you something more to do and care about. Let’s look at the four best houseplants you can grow.

Dr. Marie-Luce Chevalier, a Belgian/French geologist (地质学家), has been working as a research professor at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Beijing since 2010.
For the past 14 years, she has been studying active faults (活断层) in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and how they move. In 2021, Chevalier was presented with the Chinese Government Friendship Award in appreciation of her contributions to the development of China’s disaster assessment system of earthquake and the promotion of cooperation and exchanges between China and other countries.
Chevalier’s choice of China as a research destination was not made by chance. Her research has primarily focused on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. She had also collaborated (合作) with Chinese scientists from the beginning of her master’s program. “When they asked if I wanted to join their team after my post-doctorate, I gladly accepted and have no regrets. My fourteen years in China have provided me with a constant source of fresh personal and professional experiences,” she said, adding that her mother’s interest in Chinese culture contributed to her decision to work in the country.
Chevalier will continue to research active faults in and around Xizang actively and contribute to our understanding of how past climate developed to work towards predicting future climate change, another topic near and dear to her heart. She will accomplish this by conducting field research, sharing her findings with scientific community, teaching students who will become tomorrow’s scientists, and raising awareness among local populations about the risks they may face in their lifetime.
Chevalier’s mother went to Xizang once, realizing her lifelong dreams. Chevalier keeps raising her daughter in this safe and highly international environment, Beijing. When people ask her daughter where she is from at four years old, she proudly answers, “China!” Chevalier wants to learn more about the Chinese language and culture, continue to enjoy the happiness of the Chinese people, and look forward to seeing what China achieves next!

The hot housing market has more companies buying up single-family homes. They’re known as institutional (机构的) buyers and they accounted for a little more than 13.2% of house buying last year, according to new research from the National Association of Realtors. That was up from about 11.8% in 2020. These investors (投资者) are making it more difficult for people to find affordable housing, but a new action from the government could help prevent some of this in the future.
Claire Murphy is someone who has struggled to find affordable housing. She has been living in a camper for two years in Frisco, Colorado. “It’s more than just not having a shower,” Murphy said. “It’s feeling unsafe, feeling unsettled. ” Her boss lets her live in the office because she can’t afford to buy or rent a home. “The rents are more than 50% of my wage (工资),” Murphy said.
While there are not many new buildings being built across the country, Murphy says that’s not the truth in her area. “On every corner, about 20 apartments ( 公 寓) are being built, but we’ll never get to see them,” Murphy said. The problem is that she says investors are buying them up. “So what chance do we have ” Murphy said.
The government recently worked out some plans to deal with the housing problem. Among the list is “making sure that more government-owned housing and other housing goes to owners who will live in them, or nonprofits (非营利组织) who will improve them instead of large institutional investors”.
Matt Emery with the National Association of Realtors researches the influence of institutional investors. He says institutional investors buying up buildings is only a small part of the housing problem. For change to happen, Emery says the recommendations from the White House have to move through Congress. “We’re going to need some of these big changes to fix the problems because I don't think the market’s going to correct these on their own,” Emery said. At the same time, Murphy says she isn’t giving up finding an affordable place to call home.
8.What is the problem with the housing market
A.Investors are causing a rise in house prices. B.Buyers are less confident about it than before.
C.Housing prices are rising beyond anyone’s control. D.The government fails to attract large investment.
9.What does the underlined word “unsettled” mean in paragraph 2
A.Worthless. B.Homeless. C.Unfit. D.Unusual.
10.What does the government plan to do to deal with the housing problem
A.Offer some free houses to the needy. B.Pass laws to stop investors buying houses.
C.Provide more chances for those buying for living. D.Ask nonprofits to find second-hand houses for buyers.
11.What does Emery think of the government’s plan
A.It is effective. B.It is detailed. C.It is realistic. D.It is necessary.
Despite the growing popularity of bio-based plastics, plastic pollution remains one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. According to the OECD’s Global Plastics Outlook (2022), about 353 million metric tons of plastic waste were produced globally in 2019, with nearly 1.7 million metric tons flowing directly into aquatic (水生的) ecosystems. Much of this waste becomes trapped in large ocean currents, known as gyres (环流), forming the infamous “garbage masses” found in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
To solve this problem, researchers have been searching for plastics that can be degraded (降解) more reliably in deep-sea environments. One promising candidate is LAHB, a new eco-friendly plastic. So far, LAHB has shown strong potential as a biodegradable polymer that breaks down in river water and shallow seawater.
In a study made available online, researchers from Japan have shown for the first time that LAHB can also get biodegraded under deep-sea conditions, where low temperatures, high pressure and extremely limited nutrients make breakdown of plastic extremely difficult. The study demonstrates for the first time that LAHB undergoes active biodegradation and complete mineralization even on the deep-sea floor, where conventional PLA remains completely non-degradable.
The research team submerged (使淹没水中) two types of LAHB films — P6LAHB and P13LAHB (containing different levels of lactic acid) — alongside a conventional PLA film for comparison. After 7 and 13 months, the LAHB films revealed clear signs of biodegradation under deep-sea conditions. The P13LAHB film lost 30.9% of its weight after 7 months and over 82% after 13 months. The P6LAHB film showed similar trends. By contrast, the measurable weight loss of PLA film is 0%. There was no visible degradation during the same period, highlighting its resistance to microbial degradation.
This research fills a knowledge gap about how bio-based plastic degrade in remote marine (海洋的) areas. “By showing that LAHB can decompose and mineralize even in deep-sea conditions, the study provides a pathway for safer alternatives to conventional plastics and supports the transition to a circular bioeconomy,” says Prof. Taguchi.
12.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By telling a story. B.By revealing a concept.
C.By sharing data and facts. D.By making a comparison.
13.What do the figures in paragraph 4 imply
A.LAHB is more friendly to the environment than PLA.
B.PLA degrades easily in the deep-sea water.
C.LAHB is hard to break down in the ocean.
D.PLA should be more widely used.
14.What is Prof. Taguchi’s attitude towards the result of the research
A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent. C.Objective. D.Worried.
15.Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A.Sea — an important part of our lives
B.LAHB — good news for oceans
C.A new kind of plastic
D.A new way of protecting the ocean
As we become increasingly aware of the impact our actions have on the environment, more and more of us are looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Throughout a given trip, both big and small decisions you make can affect a lot the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) produced by your holiday. 16 Here are some tips on enjoying a “green” holiday.
·Keep it light on luggage (行李). Every single extra kilo you carry around drives up emissions. 17 Packing (收拾行李) with purpose can actively cut your carbon footprint. So you can travel with a more thoughtful, lighter bag. It’s a small change that can make a big difference.
·Explore with care. 18 . Instead of fighting traffic, you might find hidden treasures by chance, and you’re more likely to meet new people. This habit can connect you with the city you’re visiting and help you know the city better.
· 19 . Be a big believer in asking questions, especially when it comes to a hotel’s impact on people and the planet. Ask your hotel to share how it sources renewable energy, saves water, and manages waste. If the hotel can’t show proof of similar action, keep digging. The more we, as tourists, ask similar questions, the more the industry will move toward responsible practices.
·Do your part to protect the local community. Volunteer for a beach clean-up, join a reforestation project, or just pick up rubbish as you travel. Even such small efforts can help protect natural beauty for future generations. 20 .
A.Your actions make your trip meaningful long after you’ve gone home
B.Changing from taxis to bikes means you’re kind to the environment
C.What’s more, it slows you down when you explore a new city
D.So how can we make a difference when heading on holiday
E.Do something big to make others aware of the problem
F.What do you think of the benefits of them
G.Ask about your hotel’s carbon footprint

The grey English winter had settled not only over the landscape, but deep within Gina’s soul. At the age of sixty-four, she found the shortening days, the cold rain and lasting darkness increasingly difficult to bear. It wasn’t the cold that troubled her — it was the fading (渐暗的) light, the absence of the brilliant sunshine that had always felt like a promise of adventures yet to come. She feared her own adventuring days had ended before she’d even realized they were over.
Her sadness was interrupted one afternoon by the sound of the front door shutting hard, followed by her granddaughter Beth’s anxious entrance into the kitchen. Tearfully, Beth explained that her carefully planned long-distance trip to Asia had collapsed. Her travel partner had withdrawn, and Beth’s parents had firmly refused to let her travel alone. Gina’s heart ached as she watched the young girl’s dreams break — she saw so much of her own youthful spirit reflected in her granddaughter’s disappointed eyes.
In the days that followed, Gina found herself reflecting on her own lost opportunities. She remembered her youthful travels across Europe, adventures that had ended suddenly when marriage and motherhood arrived. Now as a woman whose husband had passed away, she resigned herself to quiet days, believing adventure belonged only to the young.
The turning point came during one of their quiet, treasured evenings together. As they sat by the fire, Beth cleverly turned their conversation toward literature, recalling heroines from classic novels who traveled with older partners. “In those days,” Beth remarked thoughtfully, “young women often traveled with relatives who kept them company.” Her eyes met Gina’s, and in that quiet moment, an unspoken question passed between them.
“Gran,” Beth began hesitantly, “would you consider… coming to Asia with me in January ”
Time seemed to stand still. Gina felt something shift inside her — a long-silent fire starting to burn. Looking at Beth’s hopeful face, she saw not just her granddaughter, but a chance to regain a part of herself she thought was lost forever.

故填to attract。
固定搭配play a very important role意为“扮演重要角色;起到重要作用”,very以辅音音素开头,所以用不定冠词a。
固定搭配whether...or...
46.Dear fellow students,
Nowadays, the Internet has become an essential part of our daily life, which brings us great convenience — whether it’s studying online or staying connected with others.
However, some of us have developed bad online habits. Spending too much time on games or short videos is bad for our health and studies. Worse still, harmful information may mislead us, affecting our growth.
Therefore, we should make good use of the Internet for learning. It is also important for us to control our online time wisely and keep away from harmful information. Let’s take action and use the Internet properly.

47.One possible version (高级版)
Gina took a deep breath, feeling a wave of excitement. Her kitchen table disappeared beneath a sea of guidebooks and maps, their pages heavily marked with highlighted routes and possibilities. Evenings were devoted to mastering basic local and tourist phrases. Their awkward pronunciations soon gave way to fluent greetings, filling the small kitchen again with the sound of their shared laughter. Even Lucy, who had been deeply doubtful, found herself quietly softened by the fresh energy shining in her mother — a change too deep and joyful to deny.
Then, fully prepared, they boarded the plane to Asia. They wandered through local markets, tasted unique street food, and admired ancient temples. In Beijing, they rose early in the morning to witness the sun warming the Badaling Great Wall, their hands held tightly together. For Gina, every new experience felt like rediscovering a part of herself she had long forgotten. The woman once worried that her adventuring days were gone. Now she’s walking through forests and exploring foreign cities with her beloved granddaughter by her side. One possible version (简易版)

Then, fully prepared, they boarded the plane to Asia. They walked around local markets, tasted special street food, and visited old temples. In Beijing, they got up early in the morning to see the sun rise over the Badaling Great Wall. They held each other’s hands tightly. For Gina, every new experience made her find a part of herself that she had forgotten for a long time. She once thought she could no longer travel and have fun.
