Many kids love playing sports, but being a professional athlete can be difficult. What will happen when a boy who loves basketball realizes he may not be tall enough to make it on the court For Amar Shah, that realization did not end his dream—it helped him find a new one.
Shah, a journalist and author of the graphic novel Wish I Was a Baller, turned his love for a famous basketball team into a writing career that began in eighth grade. “I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player, because I didn’t have that needed height,” Shah shared with a laugh. “So, I found my closest way to the court—through journalism.”
That choice led to some incredible opportunities. While still in high school, Shah earned press permission and began interviewing basketball legends. Thinking back on his first interview with a famous basketball player, Shah said, “Here I am, not even five feet tall, and he’s seven feet. He talked to me for 30 minutes, like we were friends.” Kids can use reading and writing to stay close to the sport they love. There are numerous ways to work in sports without competing.
In Wish I Was a Baller, Shah shared his professional journey, and he hoped that it would encourage young people to keep going. “Whatever your dreams are, continue striving for them, because you never know where they’ll take you,” he said.
Many sports fans enjoy reading books about the game they love. From player autobiographies to fictional tournaments, there is something for everyone. Teenage Scholastic Kid Reporter Asher Freije is an athlete and sports fan who enjoys reading. He shared his advice for athletes who want to read more. “Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, then you most likely will love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said. He also explained how reading could inspire new interests, sharing that a book about wrestling once inspired his interest in that sport.

For the first time, we see a species that has been in decline due to extreme weather recover through rapid evolution, so does this mean species that are increasingly being hit by dramatically rising temperatures and other challenging conditions can adapt as the planet gets warmer
But it is clear that evolution has saved countless species from climate change in the past. The key challenge is time. Until now, the fastest climate change occurred around 56 million years ago, when temperatures rose 5 ℃ to 8 ℃ over a period of roughly 20,000 years. Now temperatures could rise by more than 4 ℃ by the end of the century. Can evolution really make a difference over such a short time The answer is definitely yes, at least for organisms (有机体) with short generations. Take monkey flowers, water-loving plants, for example. When hit hard by the drought, three local populations died out. But many survivors appeared to have evolved drought tolerance in just three years.
This is what biologists call evolutionary rescue. It has been demonstrated in several labs, but Daniel Anstett at Cornell University says this is the first time it has been shown to have happened in the wild. “It’s very hard to show because you need three things: A population is declining due to a threat; it has adapted genetically in response; those genetic changes enable it to recover,” he says.
There are lots of possible examples of evolutionary rescue. But biologists haven’t been able to tick all three boxes in these cases. “The third link—to be able to show that the recovery is explained by rapid evolution—has never been done before at the scale of an entire range of the species,” says Anstett.
What’s more, as global warming continues and populations decline, they lose genetic diversity—the fuel for evolution. And long-lived species with long generation times have very little capacity for rapid evolution to begin with. Nevertheless, Anstett sees his findings as good news. “A lot of these current predictions about species decline don’t take evolution into account,” he says. “This is a story of hope.”

Taking care of your teeth is good for your oral health. But did you know that it could be good for your overall health too One procedure—root canal treatment (根管治疗)—could even reduce the inflammation (炎症) linked to heart disease.
In a new study by King’s College London published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, researchers tracked the changes in blood chemistry after participants underwent treatment for root canal infections. It is reported that root canal treatment is one of the most common dental procedures and is used to treat infection or damage to a tooth’s soft inner part. More than a third of adults in England have had it, and the study found a connection between this dental procedure and overall health.
The researchers followed 65 patients from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London for two years after they had the procedure. The participants were checked before the procedure and four times after; each time, the patients’ blood was analyzed to see how they process fat, sugar, and additional substances. Through this analysis, the team found that the patients’ health improved in several ways related to heart health and less inflammation after the treatment.
“Our findings show that root canal treatment doesn’t just improve oral health—it may also help reduce the risk of serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. It is a powerful reminder that oral health is deeply connected to overall health,” Dr Sadia Niazi, a senior clinical lecturer in dentistry at King’s College London commented. The findings matter for global health because many dental infections are left untreated, with 3.7 billion people worldwide suffering from oral disease and insufficient dental care.
Researchers say that oral health should be part of a patient’s general healthcare. People must understand that the mouth is the main gateway to general health, so looking after their oral health, doing regular checkups with their dentists, and getting diseases treated early are the best course of action.
