At Green Star Middle School, teachers make a set of small rules to teach students to save food, paper and water. These rules are not strict, but they change students’ daily habits a lot.
Ms. Li is the dining hall teacher. She tells every student to take only the food they can finish. In the past, many students filled their plates full, and threw half of the rice and vegetables into the rubbish bin after meals. Now, the school puts small posters on each dining table: “Take little, take twice; finish all you take.” Students can get a small green sticker if they finish all food on their plates every day. At the end of each month, students with more than 20 stickers can get a new notebook.
In classrooms, teachers ask students to write on both sides of paper. Many students used to throw notebooks away when only one side was used. Now the school sets a waste paper box in each classroom. Students collect used paper and send it to the recycling station every Friday. The money from recycled paper buys new books for the class library.
For water saving, every tap in washrooms has a short notice: “Turn off taps tightly after using”. The school also teaches students to collect water after washing fruits to water the flowers on the balcony.
Most students think these small rules are useful. 13-year-old Wang Kai says, “I never thought wasting small things matters. Now I know every drop of water and every piece of paper is precious. These rules help me form good living habits.”

My name is Zoe, and I live in a small town far from my middle school. I tried three ways to get to school before I found my best way.
First, I took the bus every morning last term. The bus station is ten minutes’ walk from my home. The bus ride takes 40 minutes, but the bus is always full at 7 a.m. I had to stand all the way, and sometimes I missed the bus because I got up late. Also, the bus stopped at many small stations, so I often arrived at school five minutes late.
Then my dad bought a new electric bike, and he sent me to school for two weeks. The bike ride only took 20 minutes, and we didn’t need to wait for anyone. But there are strict traffic rules for electric bikes in our town: two people can’t ride on one bike on rainy days. Last month, it rained heavily for a week, and we could not ride the bike. I had to go back to take the crowded bus again.
Now I take the shared electric bike to school by myself. The shared bike stop is just in front of my building. It takes me 22 minutes to ride to school, and I can leave home a little later than before. The traffic rules for single riders are easy to follow: wear the safety helmet, don’t ride faster than 15 kilometers per hour, and park bikes at the special stops near the school gate. I love this way most, because I can control my time and enjoy the quiet road in the morning.
I learn a lot about traffic rules from different ways of going to school. Every transport way has its own rules, and we must follow them to keep safe on the road.
26. How many transport ways did Zoe try to go to school
A.Two B.Three C.Four D.Five
27. Why was Zoe often late for school by bus
A.She walked slowly to the bus station
B.The bus stopped too many times on the way
C.She always got up very late every morning
D.The bus left the station ahead of time
28. What rule stops Zoe’s dad sending her by bike on rainy days
A.No two people on one electric bike
B.People can’t ride bikes on rainy roads
C.Safety helmets must be worn in rainy weather
D.Electric bikes can’t run fast when it rains
29. Which is NOT the rule for shared bike riders in the town
A.Wear safety helmets B.Park bikes at special stops
C.Don’t ride over 15 km/h D.Don’t ride alone on the main road
30. What can we infer from the passage
A.Taking buses is the most comfortable way to school
B.Following traffic rules keeps people safe while travelling
C.Shared bikes are free for all middle school students
D.Electric bikes are not allowed in the town in rainy seasons

Green Volunteer Club Rules for Teenagers
Welcome to our town’s Green Volunteer Club! All members must follow these clear rules during every volunteer activity, to keep our work tidy, safe and useful.

My cousin Leo used to be a boy who hated all kinds of rules at school and home. He thought all rules stopped him from having fun, so he often broke rules and got into trouble.
At home, his mom set simple rules: finish homework before playing games, turn off lights when leaving rooms, and take only enough food at dinner. Leo never followed them. He played computer games for hours after school without finishing homework, left all room lights on every night, and always filled his bowl with more food than he could eat. His mom talked with him many times, but he didn’t listen.
At school, Leo often broke classroom rules. He talked loudly when teachers gave lessons, threw waste paper on the classroom floor, and ran fast in the hallway during breaks. His head teacher asked him to the office three times in one month, and warned him that he would lose the chance to join the school volunteer club if he kept breaking rules.
Last spring, Leo wanted to join the Green Volunteer Club very much. He loved working in the park and planting small trees. To get into the club, he had to write a self-improvement plan and follow all home and school rules for one month.
Leo started to change little by little. Every afternoon, he finished homework first before playing games. At dinner, he took just a little food and took more if he needed. At school, he listened carefully in class and kept the classroom clean. One month later, he passed the rule test and joined the volunteer club successfully.
Now Leo says, “Rules are not to stop fun. They make our life tidy and fair for everyone. If everyone breaks rules, nobody can live comfortably.”
36. What did Leo think of rules at first
A.Rules help people live comfortably.
B.All rules stop him from having fun.
C.School rules are useful but home rules are useless.
D.Only volunteer club rules are worth following.
37. Which home rule did Leo break all the time before changing
A.Go to bed before 9 p.m. every day. B.Help mom clean rooms after dinner.
C.Take enough food and finish it at meals. D.Read storybooks for 30 minutes daily.
38. Why did Leo decide to follow all rules one month ago
A.His teacher gave him much homework as punishment.
B.He wanted to get the chance to join the volunteer club.
C.His mom stopped buying his favorite computer games.
D.All his classmates told him to change his bad habits.
39. What’s the correct order of Leo’s change
① He joined the Green Volunteer Club.
② He often broke school and home rules.
③ He made a self-improvement plan.
④ He changed his bad habits for one month.
A.②③④① B.②④③① C.③②④① D.③④②①
40. What’s the main lesson Leo learns at last
A.Volunteer work can change teenagers’ bad habits.
B.Teachers and parents should make strict rules for kids.
C.Following rules makes life tidy and fair for all people.
D.It’s easy for teenagers to give up their bad living habits.

Follow Small Rules, Form Good Habits
Our school has two useful saving rules. We must take only enough food in the dining hall and write on both sides of paper.
I used to waste a lot. I often took more food and threw the rest away. I also threw notebooks if only one side was used. These rules changed me a lot. Now I take small portions and reuse paper fully.
These small rules teach me to treasure resources. I learn to save food, paper and water every day. Good habits from rules make me a more responsible student.
