背景：1925年深秋，毛泽东途经长沙，重游橘子洲。彼时国内革命浪潮蓬勃兴起，军阀割据战乱不断。
当时革命前路充满未知，他目睹山河秋景，心怀家国前途。面对动荡时局与沉沉现状，追忆少年一同求索救国理想的岁月，心中满怀壮志与革新天下的抱负，就此写下这首气势磅礴的词作。
