When I was a child, I drew a face. A grown-up corrected me quickly with a circle, round eyes, a seven-shaped nose and a curved mouth. I stood confused, for this cold, mechanical pattern felt nothing like the lively faces I knew in real life.
As I grew up, I kept wondering how to draw a real face. Once, I got a chance to ask people to draw each other following two rules: never lift the pencil, and never look down at the paper. They could only look at their partner. After a minute, the drawings were terrible but wonderful. Why Because they had drawn what they truly saw, not what they thought a face should look like. They also did something rare: they made eye-to-eye, face-to-face contact for almost a full minute without looking away. They slowed down, focused fully, and truly noticed another person. That was the secret to drawing “a real face”.
Later, as an illustrated journalist, I once planned a drawn story about how public libraries served the people. I explored every corner of the library and genuinely connected with the staff. I found with their intentional, public-spirited help, those seemingly ordinary facilities served people in far more meaningful puters that I assumed were for checking out books or emails were actually lifelines for people searching for jobs and housing. The sinks in the public restroom served as a laundromat (洗衣房) and showers for the homeless. The entirely new and rich truth contributed to my series of breathing drawings.
I do not hope everyone becomes an artist, but everyone can learn to see deeply. Slow down, pay attention, and truly observe; you will rediscover love for the world and all people around you. We urgently need this courage-to see each other and ourselves clearly, and to honor the real truth hidden in plain sight.
24. What confused the author in the first paragraph
A.A fixed concept.
B.The adult’s criticism.
C.A sharp contrast.
D.The unclear drawing rules.
25. Why were the drawings terrible but wonderful in paragraph 2
A.They were messy but detailed.
B.They were rough but lively.
C.They appeared ugly but organized.
D.They seemed simple but friendly.

A.More library service roles.
B.Better maintenance of facilities.
C.Greater professional pride.
D.Deeper exploration for good stories.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Drawing a Magic.
B.Discovering the Art.

A system of canals (运河) used to direct and catch fish was found in Belize, establishing “continuity” between the Mayans and a predecessor (前一代) as they continued to use them. First believed to have been a Mayan construction, after running numerous radiocarbon dates, researchers from the University of New Hampshire(UNH) made a discovery that these fish-trapping canals were constructed before the powerful Mayan civilization.
The network directed the annual flood waters into a source pool where they could trap thousands of fish, which were able to feed a growing population. It has been estimated that the Mayan population numbered eight million. “It seems likely that the canals allowed for annual fish harvests and social meetings, which would have encouraged people to return to this area year after year and stay for longer periods of time,” said Marieka Brouwer Burg, professor at the University of Vermont.
In the largest inland wetland in Belize, Central America, New Hampshire researchers conducted tests on a large-scale pre-Columbian fish-trapping facility. At first, they never expected that anyone but the Mayans could have constructed such a complex means of catching fish. Yet, the presence of the canals extended over a thousand years in the past, before the Mayans began to appear, which “surprised” researchers due to its massive size.
“In general, we tend to regard agricultural production as the engine of civilization, but this study tells us that it wasn't just agriculture,” according to Eleanor Harrison-Buck, director of the Belize River East Archaeology project. Collecting samples along the walls, the researchers investigated carbon levels to determine “environmental changes over time”. With no evidence of crop production in sight, they concluded that these channels served as large-scale fish-trapping facilities.
“Such intensive investments in fishery show ancient fishers knew how to protect their resources and use them in a way that could sustain these habitats,” Samantha, professor of geography at Texas State University, explained. “Knowing how to use canal resources responsibly is essential for the continued availability of these resources both in the past and today.”
28. What did the researchers from the UNH find
A.A fish-trapping skill is kept till today.
B.Mayan civilization holds great mysteries.
C.A canal system predates Mayan civilization.
D.Canal systems are crucial to ancient people.
29. What do we know about the canal network
A.It linked Maya to the outside.
B.It assisted in Mayan development.
C.It caused frequent floods in Belize.
D.It promoted the Mayans’ fishing trade.
30. Which of the following may Samantha agree with
A.Sustainable development is a shared topic.
B.Fishery used to be the main economic source.
C.Ancient fishers faced special survival pressure.
D.Ancient Mayans relied heavily on the environment.
31. What can be a suitable title of the text
A.The Rise and Fall of the Mayan Civilization
B.Eco-Friendly Fishing Defined Ancient Belize
C.Ancient Fishing Activities Boost Maya Populations
D.Fish-Trapping Facility Redefines Its Maya Origin

While it may sound like something crawling out of your horrible dreams, cyborg cockroaches (蟑螂机器人) have arrived as friends rather than enemies.
Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery “backpack” powered by solar panels. The cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or take on search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.
Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a number of technologies in recent years. Different teams of scientists have designed remote-controlled robo-bugs that can climb walls, carry objects and find humans during search-and-rescue missions.
The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two “cerci” (尾蚴) send electrical impulses that cause the insect to move right or left. A battery is necessary for the sending and receiving these electrical signals, which needs to be charged up. While it’s possible to build docking (对接) stations for recharging the battery, the need to return and recharge could disrupt time-tight missions.
The team wanted to create a more practical version that did not need to return to a docking station when it ran out of power. Therefore, they designed a solar cell that could constantly ensure that the cockroach stays charged while it works. However, cockroaches have a limited surface area available for all the components necessary to move its legs and keep it powered. The solution was to design a special “backpack” that could carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable lithium polymer battery. This was attached to the top of the insect on its thorax (胸腹), and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the curved surface of the Madagascar cockroach. It allowed for this electronic device to be stably installed on the insect for over a month.
32. What are the functions of cyborg cockroaches
①Climbing walls. ②Entering unsafe areas. ③Foretelling risks.
④Rescuing humans. ⑤Generating Power. ⑥Monitoring the environment.
A.①②③
B.②③⑤
C.③④⑥
D.②④⑥
33. What is the meaning of the underlined word “disrupt” in Paragraph 4
A.Interrupt.
B.Extend.
C.Execute.
D.Shorten.
34. What is the key factor in controlling a cyborg cockroach remotely
A.The size of a cockroach.
B.The leg-control module.
C.The lifespan of a cockroach.
D.The energy harvesting device.
35. What’s the main idea of this text
A.Cockroaches are the inspiration of inventions.
B.The technology of solar panels is widely used.
C.Search-and-rescue can’t be emphasized too much.
D.Scientists have created a remote-controlled cyborg cockroach.
