A 13-year-old boy in the West Midlands, England, has raised 18,000 for charity by recycling (回收) about 1.5 million soft drink cans over the last three years.
Ryan Hulance was 10 when he started noticing many cans were thrown away in his community, harming the environment while wasting valuable natural materials. He wanted to help local food banks and look after the planet at the same time, so he set up “We Can CIC”, an organization that collected cans and sold them for charity.
At first, he only collected cans from family, friends and local parks, but soon he could do more. In 2023, he began asking restaurants, shops and nursing homes to put away their empty cans for him. Many businesses were inspired by his dedication and joined in his action. Some places specially kept large bins just to store empty cans waiting for Ryan’s weekly pickup.
Last year alone, he collected eight tons of cans—the weight of four large cars—worth about 6,000. He spent around 20 hours a week collecting, crushing (压碎) and sending cans to the recycling factories, often with help from his parents and neighbors. The crusher he used was a donation from a local businessman who respected his charity work. So far, all the money he raised has gone to buy food and basic daily goods for people in need.
“I really love what I do because I get to help people and families who are in difficulties,” Ryan said. “Every can matters, and I hope to keep growing this project to help even more people in the future.”

①Life can be quite busy so taking a break and enjoying your own self-time can be really good for you. Being with friends and family is important for emotional health, building relationships and developing social skills. However, spending time on your own can help you to grow in different ways.
②The British expert Pinchin, who helps people with emotional health, says that spending time on your own has lots of benefits. “It is a fantastic chance for children’s minds to explore,” she explains. “Some children become slower in thinking when they follow orders from others all the pared with them, kids who stay alone can let their imagination run wild. Also, they can grow more independent, focus better and get the ability to make choices.”
③Spending time alone also helps you to learn other practical skills. “With no direction from others, a child can spend time working out how to complete a task, so they can get better at dealing with different problems,” says Pinchin. Trying to work through difficult problems by yourself can also make you more confident and stronger.
④Understanding how to manage your emotions is another benefit of having time alone. In fact, a study has shown that children who spend some time playing on their own are better at controlling their emotions when they’re older. They can always find proper ways to deal with them and become happier again.
⑤“Sometimes, enjoying self-time is good,” says Margarita who made the study. She added, “Learning to be alone is a skill, and it can make you feel fresh and energetic.”

In January, the Ice Memory Sanctuary (库) opened in Antarctica (南极洲). It is the world’s first place for keeping mountain ice cores (冰芯).
Ice cores are very important for studying the Earth’s climate. They are made up of many layers (层) of ice. As snow slowly built up over thousands of years, more and more ice layers formed. By studying these layers, scientists can learn what the environment was like in the past. They can also guess how the climate might change in the future.
Ice cores can also tell us about human activities in ancient times. In 2025, Danish scientists studied 3,000-year-old ice cores from Greenland. They found lead (铅) pollution in the ice. Scientists believe this pollution might have affected people’s health and their lives in ancient Rome, NBC reported.
In a word, ice cores “allow scientists — now and in the future — to understand what has changed, how fast, and why”, said Celeste Saulo, from WMO, at the opening ceremony of the Ice Memory Sanctuary.
However, the Earth is losing 27 billion tons of ice every year, the same as 27 years of human water use. Building the sanctuary is an important way to protect ice cores. It works like a natural fridge and can keep ice cores at about -50℃. Best of all, it does not need any electricity. The WMO says this design can save energy and reduce costs.
27.What can scientists learn from ice cores
A. Past environmental conditions. B. The size of mountains.
C. Modern human activities. D. Daily life in Antarctica.
28.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 mainly shows the ________ of protecting ice cores.
A. result B. cost C. value D. plan
29.What’s the biggest advantage of the Ice Memory Sanctuary
A. It has a long history. B. It makes water clean.
C. It covers a wide area. D. It works without electricity.
30.What is the best title of the text

B. A Smart Way to Save Energy

D. A Special Home for Ice Cores
