When the bus started to run off the road and speed up, the students were not afraid. Instead, they worked together fast to stop the danger. Jackson ran to the front at once and held the steering wheel (方向盘) to keep the bus balanced. At the same time, Darrius jumped to push the brake (刹车) hard. He said the bus was moving faster and faster, and stopping it almost made him fall forward, but he did not give up. While some students were controlling the bus, others helped the sick driver. Kay called 911 right away. Destiny and Clark noticed Ms Taylor reaching for her asthma medicine. They quickly helped her get the medicine to breathe better. Do you like bread for breakfast Have you ever dropped a piece of bread and found it lying butter-side down on the floor You might think it’s just bad luck. But scientists tell us there is a real reason behind the phenomenon (现象).
Some people believe the weight of the butter makes the bread fall that way. However, this is not true. If the butter is put evenly (均匀地), it doesn’t change how the bread falls. So what makes the bread land butter-side down so often
Imagine you are eating breakfast. Suddenly, you drop a piece of bread off the table. When more than half of the bread moves past the edge (边缘), it starts to turn over. It keeps turning at a steady speed (匀速) while falling towards the floor. The problem is that most tables are not very high. The distance to the floor is too short for the bread to make a full turn. It usually completes only about half of a rotation before it hits the ground. That is why it lands butter-side down.
Is there any way to make it land butter-side up Sure. If the bread falls from a greater height—for example, from nine or ten feet above the ground — it would have enough time to make a full rotation. Then it would land on its dry side. And if the bread is pushed off the table very quickly, it may not have time to rotate at all. In that case, it would also land butter-side up.
But even if your bread lands on the dry side, it’s still on the floor. Maybe the best way to enjoy bread is to make sure it doesn’t fall at all.
