Maine, a northernmost state in New England with 3,500 miles of rocky coastline and dozens of historic lighthouses, draws around 15 million visitors a year. Here are the top ways to experience it.
Hike at Moosehead (驼鹿头) Lake
Moosehead is Maine’s largest lake, stretching 40 miles in its remote highlands. Surrounded by trees, it looks like a moose’s head from above. Visitors can take a float plane or hike to enjoy views. Most visitors staying overnight at Moosehead Lake will see one or two real moose walking slowly around the shallow waters.
Stay or play on a farm
Maine is the United States’ top producer of cranberries (蔓越莓), which you can find at family-run farm stands across the state. Many farms offer hands-on experiences that range from apple picking and cranberry picking in wetlands. “It’s a way for people to connect with the realities of farming that leads to a deeper understanding and appreciation.” says Ellen Sabina of the nonprofit Maine Farmland Trust. To find a farm stay, check Real Maine or the Maine Organic Gardens and Farmers Association.
Find fine art in Rockland
Rockland is a small fishing port with a big reputation for art. In the historic downtown, the Farnsworth Art Museum is where to find typically Maine works by members of the Wyeth family and abstract, single-colored sculptures by Louise Nevelson. Nearby, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art shows modern exhibits in a shiny gallery.

A boy couldn’t wear shoes until the age of 13 due to a childhood accident that left his foot seriously injured. He has recently undergone a life-changing surgery. Thanks to the floating medical charity Mercy Ships, Tera is now able to wear shoes for the first time and play football with his friends.
From a fishing village in Madagascar, Tera’s family was unable to afford proper medical treatment after he accidentally tipped over a pot of boiling water onto his left leg at the age of one. He suffered third-degree burns, which caused his leg to grow attached to his ankle, making it difficult to walk and impossible to wear shoes.
His family had previously sought help from three local traditional healers, each offering their own methods, but none of them proved effective. Later, his mother learned that the international hospital charity Mercy Ships had docked (停靠) its floating hospital, Africa Mercy, in Madagascar.
After applying and strict pre-surgical screening, Tera was confirmed fit for surgery. So when volunteers from Mercy Ships informed Tera’s mother about the free surgery available on board, she wrapped Tera’s baby brother on her back and began a two-day journey with her children to reach the ship.
Tera was given an appointment on the Africa Mercy and underwent surgery on June 27th,2024, to release the burn contracture (挛缩). He is now able to wear shoes for the first time since he was a baby. “He should have a normally functioning ankle now, which means he will be able to wear regular shoes and play like any other child,” said Dr. Venter, the physician who performed the operation.
Before the surgery, Tera was often teased for going barefoot and couldn’t join his friends in football — his favorite sport. “Now I am happy,” he said. “My friends don’t make fun of me anymore. We all play together now.” Since the surgery, not only has Tera been making up for lost games on the pitch, he’s also been able to go fishing with his dad.
4. What made it difficult for Tera to walk or wear shoes
A.He injured his foot while fishing. B.He was born with a foot problem.
C.He was badly burned by boiling water. D.His family didn’t treat his burns in time.
5. What did Tera’s family do before they found proper medical care
A.They thought home care might help.
B.They waited for Mercy Ships to come.
C.They visited different surgeons for treatment.
D.They tried traditional methods that didn’t work.
6. What can be inferred about Mercy Ships from the text
A.It needs an appointment beforehand.
B.It offers free treatment on board the ship.
C.It sails around Africa offering medical care.
D.It treats people only when docked at big cities.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Tera’s mother
A.Brave. B.Proud. C.Cautious. D.Persistent.
C
Many people believe that dogs resemble (相像) their owners in both looks and behavior — and research now supports this idea. Interestingly, the resemblance between the two often increases over time. However, not every dog-human match works well. For example, about one third of guide dogs are returned because they don’t get along with their assigned owners.
To reduce such mismatches, researchers in Germany are studying what makes a successful dog-owner relationship. Their findings confirm that dogs often share physical and personality characteristics with their owners. “We want to understand what makes a good match between a person and a dog,” says researcher Yana Bender. “First, we need to explore whether they are generally more similar or different.”
Writing in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, Bender and her team reviewed existing studies. They found that some similarities are visible: women with short hair tend to prefer dogs with short ears, while those with long hair often choose long-eared breeds.
Beyond appearance, personalities often match too. Introverted (内向的) owners are more likely to have shy or nervous dogs, while careful, organized people tend to have dogs that are easier to train and more active. Psychologists have long known that people feel more comfortable with those who look or act like them—and this seems to apply to pets as well. For example, women may see dogs that match their own features as more intelligent or friendly.
However, personality matching goes deeper than physical appearance or initial choice. A dog’s behavior may change over time under the influence of its owner’s mood — and the opposite is also true. A nervous owner might cause their dog to become more anxious, while an anxious dog could increase its owner’s stress.
In conclusion, dogs and their owners often grow to resemble each other not just by choice, but through ongoing interaction. Understanding this could lead to better dog-owner pairings in the future.
8. Why are guide dogs mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To suggest that guide dogs require special training.
B.To show that not all dogs and humans are best friends.
C.To prove that dogs can resemble their owners in behavior.
D.To illustrate that not all dog-human matches are successful.
9. Which example shows similarity between owners and dogs
A.Nervous owners have active dogs.
B.Organized owners have quiet dogs.
C.Intelligent women choose lazy dogs.
D.Short-haired women like short-eared dogs.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 5
A.Nervous owners make dogs anxious quickly.
B.Dog behavior changes without owners’ influence.
C.Owners and dogs influence each other’s emotions.
D.Physical appearance matters more than personality.
11. What can we infer from the passage
A.Dogs’ behavior has little influence on owners’ moods.
B.Resemblance between dogs and owners decreases over time.
C.Initial choices determine long-term dog-owner relationships.
D.Understanding how resemblance forms helps create better pairings.

Climate change is causing the oceans to get warmer and more acidic, making it harder for corals to build and maintain their mineral skeletons (骨骼). Eventually, coral reefs will literally start to dissolve (溶解). It’s a sad story, but one with a surprising silver lining.
Research presented this week shows dissolving coral will slow climate change, by boosting the oceans’ ability to take in carbon dioxide (CO ) out of the atmosphere. By the end of the century, the oceans could be absorbing up to 400 megatons (兆吨) of additional carbon per year. That’s more than the annual emissions of Australia or the United Kingdom.
Corals build their skeletons from calcium carbonate by pulling carbonate ions (碳酸根离子) from seawater. But more CO in the air drives more of the gas into the ocean, making it more acidic and reducing carbonate ions. This makes it harder for coral reefs to grow and may eventually lead to coral dissolution. Dissolving calcium carbonate reduces acidity more than it releases carbon, restoring ocean pH and increasing its carbon absorption.
Alban Planchat, a climate scientist, and his colleagues used a computer model to see what would happen to coral reefs and the effects of coral dissolution on ocean carbon cycling as the world warms. They tested multiple climate cases, ranging from more optimistic cases in which carbon emissions eventually decline to pessimistic cases in which humanity doesn’t reduce emissions at all. Results showed that even in moderate cases, coral reefs are expected to decline, but this process could help trap carbon in the ocean. By 2300, an extra 110,000 megatons of carbon could be stored.
For Planchat, the result is a clear reminder that the climate and biodiversity crises are connected, but are not identical. Even if dead reefs would help a bit with climate change, losing them would destroy vital ecosystems that host about 25% of marine species. If he had to choose, Planchat thinks the biodiversity crisis needs more attention. “We always talk about the carbon footprint for everything,” he says. “It’s necessary, but we also have to take into account the biodiversity.”
12. What does the underlined phrase “a surprising silver lining” probably mean in paragraph 1
A.An obvious drawback. B.A hidden danger.
C.An unexpected bright side. D.A temporary solution.
13. What directly prevents corals from building mineral skeletons
A.More CO2 escapes into the air.
B.Acidic water decreases carbonate ions.
C.Coral skeletons stop producing calcium.
D.Warmer water destroys coral skeletons.
14. What do Planchat’s models suggest about coral dissolution
A.It is unlikely to happen this century.
B.It might help oceans trap more carbon.
C.It can slow down ocean carbon cycling.
D.It will cause an increase of marine species.
15. What is the main purpose of the text
A.To suggest ways to slow down global warming.
B.To call for more research about coral dissolution.
C.To explain the reason why ocean becomes acidic.
D.To show how coral reefs may help absorb carbon.

At various stages of life, different emotions influence us. 16 However, as we grow older, the burdens we carry tend to become heavier. Consequently, negative emotions such as anxiety and sadness may take center stage in our lives. 17 Certainly not. The most effective way to manage them is through calm acceptance. I would like to share two useful tips with you on how to do this.
18 What should we do in those moments, such as the fear of public speaking It is crucial not to fight against these feelings, as doing so will only worsen the situation. Instead, try taking deep breaths. This practice allows more oxygen into your body and helps relieve nervousness.
Next, let’s address how to cope with anxiety, a challenge many of us face at some point in our lives. For instance, I once experienced deep anxiety before examinations: “What if I receive a low grade ” 19 However, after attending a lecture at school, I came to realize that what truly matters is not only achieving high grades but also acquiring knowledge. Then, I redirected my efforts toward studying without merely fixing on the outcome of my grades. After putting in my best effort, I learned to accept whatever results came my way with a sense of calm. 20
It’s said that true courage does not lie in conquering everything but rather in refusing to be overwhelmed by anything at all. When negative emotions arise, face them and seek constructive solutions to managing them effectively.
A.Is it easy for us to resist our negative emotions
B.We all encounter situations that may cause nervousness.
C.Is it necessary for us to remove these feelings from our minds
D.This thought restricted my ability to concentrate on my studies.
E.The best way to handle anxiety is to ignore it and focus on work.
F.In our youth, happiness often dominates our emotional landscape.
G.Surprisingly, this shift helped me overcome anxiety and focus better on studies.

The moonlight came through the window covered in frost, and made the frost look shiny and silver. As 12-year-old Lily huddled(蜷缩)under her thin and worn-out blanket, she could feel the cold seeping (渗透)through the fabric, making her tremble (发抖). The old blanket had been a comfort since she was a baby, but tonight it offered little warmth against the icy cold.
Downstairs, the faint tapping of the keyboard echoed (回响) through the silent house, a non-stop rhythm that seemed to match the ticking of the clock on the wall. Dad was working again, his fingers flying over the keys with a speed that spoke of long hours of practice. Each tap was like a nail driven into the silence of the house.
Lily glanced at the handmade invitation card on her bedside table, its shiny letters spelling “Happy Birthday, Dad!” now seeming childish and out of place. Three weeks ago, Lily had excitedly planned a surprise for Dad’s 40th birthday. She’d saved lunch money to buy his favorite walnut cake, memorized a piano piece he once taught her, and even convinced Mom to keep it secret. But tonight, like the past twenty nights, Dad remained working on his laptop, buried in reports from his new job promotion.
A sudden cough made Lily’s small body shake. The room felt colder than usual. Her trembling fingers reached for the thermometer (温度计)—39.8℃. She opened her mouth to call for Dad, but stopped. She could still hear his voice from last Tuesday, “Can’t you see I’m in the middle of a meeting ” The memory made her hide deeper in the pillows, her determination fading away.
Trembling, Lily pulled the blanket over her head, hoping to find comfort in the dark. Maybe if she slept, the headache would disappear, and things would be better when she woke up. When she was hot and confused, she heard fast footsteps, felt strong arms lift her, and smelled Dad’s familiar smell with panic...
Lily found herself in a hospital room as she slowly opened her eyes.

读后续写范文
Lily found herself in a hospital room as she slowly opened her eyes. Soft white light filled the ward. She saw her father sitting beside the bed with red tired eyes, holding her hand tightly and saying sorry repeatedly. He blamed himself for ignoring her feelings and burying himself in work all day. Lily smiled weakly and told him she understood his hard work to support the whole family.
When morning light came into the hospital room, Dad was holding something familiar. It was the handmade birthday card she prepared for him. He read the warm words on the card with tears rolling down his face and said it was the best gift he had ever received. He promised to spare more time staying with the family from then on. Lily felt warm and peaceful, all the cold loneliness gone.
