Four online platforms for reselling used clothes
Poshmark
Poshmark is a favorite platform for selling used clothes. Sellers take their own photos and list their items. They can also deal with the buyer directly. Another advantage of Poshmark is that it offers free shipping to sellers. It takes a 20% commission (佣金) on each sale over $15. If the sale is under $15, it takes a fixed commission of $ 2.95.
eBay
eBay is by far the biggest platform to sell used clothing and other items. It will get your items in front of millions of buyers and allow you to sell worldwide. eBay charges a 13% commission on everything you sell. You get 50 free listings a month. If you want to list more than that, you will need to open an eBay Store.
ThredUp
ThredUp works a little differently. Sellers needn’t take pictures, make lists, and ship items by themselves because ThredUp does the work for them! All sellers have to do is box up their things and send them in. All clothing must be in good condition. Shipping is free for both sellers and buyers. But buyers can’t negotiate (协商) with sellers for prices. Besides, it takes a 50% commission on each sale.
Mercari
Mercari has tools like “Smart Pricing”, which automatically (自动地) adjusts an item’s price to the average or the slightly above-average market price. It also allows buyers to search for an item via just a photo in addition to the text search. Usually, it shows both available and sold items. The platform earns a fixed 10% commission, plus 2.9%+$0.30 payment processing fees.
1. What is the similarity between Poshmark and ThredUp
A.Both require used clothes of high quality.
B.Both offer free delivery services to sellers.
C.Both permit direct negotiations on discounts.
D.Both ask sellers to present the product details.
2. Which platform offers the highest profit to users selling a T-shirt priced at $10
A.Poshmark. B.eBay. C.ThredUp. D.Mercari.
3. What can we know about Mercari
A.It aids in the process of pricing items.
B.It organizes sales promotions frequently.
C.It removes sold items from the search list. D.It offers a wide variety of search methods.

For one woman, a quiet walk in the neighborhood turned into a life-saving task.
All was calm until a weak sound cut through the quiet. At first, she thought she imagined it — a soft cry, almost too quiet to notice. But then it came again, clearer this time: a small, frightened cry. Her heart jumped a beat. She stopped. Something was wrong. A dog was in trouble.
She looked at nearby yards, fences, and sidewalks — and then realized the cries were coming from below. Leaning over a storm drain (泄水沟), she saw at the bottom sat a dog, wide-eyed, shaking, and badly hoping someone would hear her.
Without hesitation, she called Animal Law Enforcement for help. Corporal Rollins arrived quickly, looking over the situation. The drain was too narrow for a simple rescue (营救), and the space below was small, making it impossible to climb in safely. Then Rollins noticed a nearby well cover. After the cover was lifted, a dark tunnel (通道) appeared, and almost immediately, the dog carefully walked toward the light, as if sensing that help had arrived.
Officer Moore soon joined Rollins, and together they formed a careful plan. With patience, calm voices, and treats in hand, Rollins climbed down and slowly earned the dog’s trust. Dirty, frightened, but unharmed, she finally allowed herself to be fixed and lifted safely out of the tunnel.
The frightened dog, named Kita, was brought to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Her photo was quickly posted, and almost immediately her family recognized her. They rushed to the place, overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved dog. Before leaving, they made the right choice to microchip (植入芯片) her, making sure she could always find her way home in the future.
Another life has been saved. Another happy tail has returned to the home where it rightfully belongs.
4. What was the dog doing when the woman found it
A.It was calling for help. B.It was lying quietly there.
C.It was running in the street. D.It was searching for food.
5. Which can best describe the method of the rescue
A.Proper. B.Costly. C.Stressful. D.Strange.
6. What did the dog do when being rescued
A.It refused to move. B.It cried loudly.
C.It fought against the rescuers. D.It believed in the rescuers.
7. Which saying best fits what the dog’s owners did at last
A.Every dog has its day. B.Love me, love my dog.
C.Better late than never. D.Every coin has two sides.

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts.
Seeing the results, Robert Ferl of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences said, “Plants actually grow in lunar stuff. Are you kidding me ” He and other researchers planted thale cress, a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions.
The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week, the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants were stunted. The longer the soil was exposed to radiation (辐射) and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth.
Simon Gilroy of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said,“ This is a big step forward to know that you can grow plants.” Gilroy added, “The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”
Moon dirt is full of glass particles (颗粒), which got in the Apollo lunar landers and wore down the moonwalkers’ spacesuits. One solution might be to use younger geologic (地质的) spots on the moon, like lava flows (熔岩流), for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient mixtures or artificial lighting.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth. In 2021, NASA finally gave out 12grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was right, with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon soon.
8. What can we know about Ferl’s experiment
A.The plants planted grew quickly. B.It ended after the Apollo missions.
C.It was conducted on the moon surface. D.The results made him feel unbelievable.
9. What does the underlined word “stunted” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Appealing. B.Super. C.Unsafe. D.Undeveloped.
10. Which of the following can be inferred about soils from younger geologic spots
A.They mainly include lava flows. B.They can serve as artificial lighting.
C.They might have fewer glass particles. D.They have nothing to do with moon dirt.
11. Why did NASA believe the suitable timing arrived
A.More astronauts would be sent to collect moon soil again.
B.Some moon soil had been shared with other researchers.
C.Apollo crews returned with enough moon dirt and rocks.
D.Researchers were unwilling to experiment with earth stuff.
D
If you take a walk through a Pittsburgh city park, you might come across a group of goats (山羊) eating poison ivy, one type of plants harmful to the ecosystem (生态系统). It is part of an experiment (实验).
By eating a lot of plants, goats greatly cut down the plants that need to be treated with herbicides (除草剂). Herbicides are traditionally used to clear out unwanted plants. There is glyphosate in many herbicides, which is reported to lead to cancer — a serious illness. Herbicides can remain in the soil and on plants, and during rain, they are washed into streams and rivers, further polluting the ecosystem.
There’s a need for goats all across the U.S., including California and New Mexico, where they help in wildfire prevention. Goats are sure-footed, and they enjoy climbing up and getting to the plants that are difficult for humans to clear away. They prefer woody plants, soft shoots and bushes (灌木丛) compared with other plant-eaters, such as cows, who are happy with grasses and low-lying plants. This makes goats perfect for clearing areas of high-growing woody plants that strengthen wildfires.
However, there are challenges in using goats. Their hairs are thin, which means they couldn’t work outside in cold winter. Goats can break seeds (种子) of harmful plants down in their stomachs, so they don’t spread the plants they’re eating, but this also makes them easy to suffer from stomach illnesses.
But when you think about the bigger picture, these problems are just small. One good thing that came from Pittsburgh’s goat experiment was the public interest it received. After the experiment finished, many other cities wanted to know how they could start a similar project. People, it turns out, also like goats. Park visitors love seeing the goats at work. Their presence brings a lot of joy and adds to the park experience!
12. Why are goats used in some city parks in the U.S.
A.To study their eating habits. B.To cut down the costs on herbicides.
C.To attract more tourists to the parks. D.To deal with harmful plants in a natural way.
13. What can we infer about goats from paragraph 3
A.They are no better at climbing than cows.
B.They prefer low-lying plants to woody bushes.
C.They help prevent wildfires by eating specific plants.
D.They are mainly raised in California and New Mexico.
14. What is the public’s attitude towards the goat project
A.Positive. B.Worried. C.Uncaring. D.Unclear.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.The Disadvantages of Using Herbicides in Parks
B.How Goats Help Protect the Ecosystem in the U.S.
C.Different Ways to Prevent Wildfires Across the U.S.
D.How Pittsburgh’s Park Experiment Was Carried Out

It was supposed to be the best day of our school trip. Our class had set off early to hike up Green Hill, laughing and chatting as we climbed through the bright morning sunshine. By noon we had almost reached the top, proud of how far we had come. The view from the slope was lovely, and nothing seemed to worry us.
Then, without warning, the weather changed. A thick grey fog rolled in from the valley, and within minutes we could barely see the classmate walking just ahead. The cheerful voices died away, and a worried silence fell over the group. Some of us had no idea which way led back down the hill. What had felt like an easy, happy walk now seemed strange and a little frightening. Some students quietly reached out to hold the hands of those beside them.
Our teacher, Mr. Wang, told everyone to stop and stay exactly where they were. “Nobody moves alone,” he said firmly. A few students looked frightened, and one girl began to cry softly. The path we had walked up so happily had completely disappeared into the white mist around us. For a few long moments, nobody knew quite what to do, and the cold air pressed in around us. We all turned to look at one another, each hoping someone would be brave enough to speak first. Mr. Wang’s calm voice was the only steady thing in the swirling fog.
Taking a deep breath, we calmed down and tried to think of a way out.

At last, the fog began to thin, and we walked safely out of the hill.

Taking a deep breath, we calmed down and tried to think of a way out.
Mr. Wang gathered us into a tight group to keep us warm and avoid getting lost. He told us to keep talking softly to cheer each other up and stay close to the big rocks beside us. He took out his mobile phone and sent a message to the school for help. We waited patiently, holding each other’s hands tightly. No one cried any longer, and we encouraged one another constantly.
At last, the fog began to thin, and we walked safely out of the hill.
We saw the rescue workers walking towards us. We followed them slowly down the mountain path. When we got back to the school bus, all of us felt so relieved. This unforgettable trip taught me that staying calm and united can help us get through any difficulty. I will always remember Mr. Wang’s calmness and the warmth between classmates.
