Terns (燕鸥) chirping and wolves howling are among a pioneering composition that integrates sounds from nature with traditional instruments. Bird songs and animal calls will interact with orchestral music on an album by Stewart Copeland.
Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a “cooperation between nature and music”. A croaking frog, a black-footed albatross (信天翁), and a red deer will “perform” with Copeland, alongside 30 musicians from the Kingdom Orchestra. Copeland said none of the natural recordings had been manipulated or returned. “All the bird and animal sounds are exactly as they were, but I put them in positions so that they add up to a melody and rhythm,” he said. “Their voices bring an super authenticity to the music. They all have their own individual melodies but when you put an instrument in, everything is more amazing.”
Wild Concerto is inspired by the arctic tern’s migration from pole to pole, and creatures possibly encountered along the way. Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. “Many of these species are endangered and their sounds could vanish in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized.”
For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts — recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150 films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings he has been called “the David Attenborough of sound”. Copeland is a brilliant talent. He’s combined natural sounds and music seamlessly. This is another way for people to listen to nature.
He hopes the album will raise people’s awareness of creatures whose sounds cannot be clearly captured due to noise pollution: “Two-thirds of the species in my library are now basically extinct. Twenty-five or 30 years ago, when I wanted to record one hour of primitive sound, it took about three or four hours to do that with minimal editing, compared to 2,000 recording hours today, because there are so many man-made sounds in the environment...”
4. What is the feature of the album Wild Concerto
A.Integrating natural sounds with music perfectly.
B.Mixing bird songs with animal calls completely.
C.Producing super realistic bird songs and animal calls.
D.Making successful changes to bird songs and animal calls.
5. What does the underlined word “manipulated” in paragraph 2 mean

6. What do we know about Copeland
A.He was optimistic and hopeful about the wildlife situation.
B.He was indifferent and helpless about the noise pollution.
C.He expressed his great concern about the endangered species.
D.He demonstrated enormous passion about the success of the concert.
7. What does the author think of Copeland’s efforts

On the morning of November 13, a graceful violin melody flowed along the Qingdao seashore, blending (融合) perfectly with the rhythm of the ocean waves. The man playing the violin is Petar Kutin, a Bulgarian teaching music at Yew Chung International School of Qingdao.
For Kutin, who has been extensively trained in Western music, Chinese music holds a special charm. He skillfully combines Chinese and Western musical elements and works with Chinese musicians to create original pieces. In one of his latest works, Kutin blends his violin with the erhu, alongside the sounds of frogs and birds, creating a harmonious and moving composition.
“I believe that music is an incredibly powerful language that brings people together.” Kutin said. At Yew Chung International School of Qingdao, this philosophy comes to life. To help his students with diverse backgrounds overcome cultural shock and quickly adapt to the Chinese environment, Kutin arranges music pieces tailored to their abilities. “When students perform together, it promotes teamwork and allows them to express both their cultural identity and individuality. Playing together builds confidence, happiness, and a sense of belonging. Music truly bonds the performers.” Kutin said.
Kutin also uses music to deliver meaningful messages to his students. He wrote the lyrics of a song about frugality together with the students, explaining what frugality means — reusing items instead of throwing them unnecessarily, avoiding waste. They turned this message into a song and then into a music video, which they play almost every week.
In addition to his work at school, Kutin composes music for social causes. He has created several pieces to help people with mental disabilities relax and find comfort.
“Music is constantly developing, and musicians must keep learning to grow.” he said. With a passion for creating and sharing, Kutin aims to promote deeper connections between people and cultures, contributing to a more harmonious and lively future through music.
8. What do we know about Kutin
A.He blends east and west in music.
B.He received music education in China.
C.He thinks nature is vital in Chinese music.
D.He prefers Chinese music to Western music.
9. What is Kutin’s belief about music
A.Music enhances personal abilities.
B.Music removes cultural differences.
C.Music bears the magic to unite people.
D.Music expresses the philosophy of life.
10. What can we learn from the example in paragraph 4
A.Kutin’s music is popular.

Although Toulla Hadjigeorgiou has always wanted to be an artist, she remembers being told that “it was not a proper profession.”Yet, her passion for painting emerged at a young age, and her art journey was shaped by her early experiences and the world around her. “At around five years old in primary school, a few kids in my class would want me to draw for them,” she recalls. The vivid pleasant smell of powdered (粉状的)paint mixed with water and the ‘canvas’ — paper used to wrap fish and chips — are treasured memories of her early creativity. When her parents gifted her a Reeves Oil Painting Set at age 12, she discovered a new medium. She still uses the palette knife that came with it.
Her medium of choice has developed over the years. “For many years, my medium was oil,” she says, “but today, my style suits both oil and watercolour.” She appreciates oil, which she finds “forgiving” and ideal for layering, while her approach to watercolour challenges traditional techniques. “I paint layer over layer to produce strong, vivid colour,” she adds.
Growing up in a family with little interest in art, Toulla faced challenges in pursuing her passion. Nevertheless, she found inspiration in the works of old masters like Canaletto and Vermeer, noting that “some influence came from personally studying the technical skill of traditional art.”
Now, living in the countryside, her surroundings move her art. “I am inspired to paint more landscapes, farm life and animals,” she shares. Her travels also play a significant role in her work, as she seeks out quieter places for reference.
Toulla aims to catch the nature of her subjects, motivating viewers to reflect on the stories behind the scenes she paints. “I want them to consider what the people in a scene are experiencing,” she explains. By staying true to her artistic vision and avoiding trends, she creates distinctive works that sing praises to the beauty of everyday life.
12. What can we learn about Toulla from paragraph 1
A.She followed others’ footprints.
B.She painted with materials at hand.
C.She was modelled after by other kids.
D.She was sensitive to the smell of paint.
13. Why does Toulla integrate watercolour into her painting
A.To meet viewers’ needs.
B.To compare the two media.
C.To popularize her painting methods.
D.To better her works’ expressiveness.
14. What kept Toulla’s passion for painting as she grew up
A.Professional training.
B.Exploring great artworks.
C.Travels to different places.
D.Inspiring ideas from fellows.
15. Which best reflects Toulla’s painting philosophy
A.Choices of painting subjects come first.
B.Art is a celebration of daily life’s essence.
C.Pursuing trends is critical for creative works.
D.Works should reflect painters’ inner emotions.

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it ” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

第二节 读后续写
Paragraph 1
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. She told me that the narrator’s voice guided the whole play and was just as important as the princess. Then she picked a dandelion and handed it to me. She asked me to read my lines with the flower beside me every noon. Gradually, I calmed down and performed the narration fluently. On the play day, I stood on the stage confidently and delivered my lines smoothly, winning warm applause from the audience.
Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower. I pressed the dry dandelion in my diary book as a special treasure. Whenever I feel upset about not being the center of attention, I will look at it and remember my mother’s words. Every person shines in their own unique way, just like every flower in the garden. This little dandelion has taught me to accept myself and value my own light.
