Ⅷ. 阅读理解(每小题 1 分,共 15 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
In 2007, writer Alan Weisman wrote a book called The World Without Us. In the book, he showed his readers a world without humans. Let's imagine such a world.
All human activities stop. Cars disappear from the roads, boats from the rivers, and planes from the skies. Streets, beaches and parks that are usually full of people remain empty.
It is no surprise that animals would soon increase in number. In cities, traffic noise often means that animals cannot easily hear each other. Without humans, the noise would drop greatly as traffic stops. This allows natural sounds to fill the air. It is much easier for animals to find each other and form families. Also, tourists disappear from beaches and seas. Sea animals would not be troubled by people around them.
Ecosystems would start to balance again, too. Trees would grow freely without the danger of being cut down. Forests would take back the space that humans now live in. The earth would soon be a green world again.
Without pollution, the natural wonders which have been hidden behind smog for years would appear again. Cleaner air and water would allow them to present all their beauty. But there wouldn't be people to admire such an amazing world. What a sad thing to think about!
Throughout history, humans have left so many marks on the earth. The rapid development of human society has made us care less for nature. It's clear that we can't wait till imagination becomes reality. We need to think more about how we get along with nature.
What is The World Without Us about
A. How humans will disappear from the earth.
B. What the world would be like without humans.
C. How to protect the environment.
D. The history of human development.
What would happen to animals in a world without humans
A. Their number would increase.
B. They would have more trouble finding food.
C. They would leave the cities and go to the forests.
D. They would not be able to hear each other.
What does the underlined word "balance" in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese
A. 消失 B. 破坏 C. 平衡 D. 改变
Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A. Without humans, the earth would become a green world again.
B. Natural wonders would appear again without pollution.
C. Humans have left many marks on the earth.
D. The writer thinks it's good for humans to disappear.
What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce Alan Weisman's book.
B. To show how important humans are to the earth.
C. To call on people to get along well with nature.
D. To describe the beautiful world without humans.
B
The panda is a Chinese national treasure, and has become popular around the world. In fact, back in the 1970s, there were only around 1,000 of these lovely animals in the wild. In 1961, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was looking for an animal as its logo. The panda was chosen because it is "an animal that is beautiful, endangered and is one loved by many people in the world".
But in the year 2016, there came some fantastic news - the panda was moved from "endangered" to "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. When people worldwide celebrated, they could not help asking, "So, how did this happen "
China's government has made great efforts over the years. Among the first national parks in China, there was one for panda protection. The Giant Panda National Park is three times as large as Yellowstone National Park in the United States. As of now, 67 protected areas have been created. Research centres have also been set up, in which over 460 pandas have been born.
Increased education among the local people has also played an important role. With a better understanding of environmental protection, farmers have returned part of their farmland to the forests. They plant trees and bamboo to provide pandas with more space and food.
The panda is not the only animal to benefit from these actions. The forests that they live in are also home to many other animals and plants. As the forests have grown larger, the panda's neighbours have also increased greatly in population. Protecting pandas is undoubtedly helpful to the survival of a whole ecosystem.
Why was the panda chosen as the logo of WWF
A. Because it is beautiful, endangered and loved by many people.
B. Because it is a Chinese national treasure.
C. Because there are only a few pandas left in the wild.
D. Because it is popular around the world.
When was the panda moved from "endangered" to "vulnerable"
A. In 1961. B. In 1970. C. In 2016. D. In 2021.
How many protected areas for pandas have been created in China
A. 1. B. 67. C. 460. D. 1,000.
What have the local farmers done to help protect pandas
A. They have set up research centres.
B. They have returned part of their farmland to the forests.
C. They have built national parks.
D. They have stopped farming completely.
What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Only pandas benefit from the protection efforts.
B. The forests are only home to pandas.
C. Protecting pandas helps the whole ecosystem.
D. The population of other animals has not changed.
C
The baiji, or Yangtze River dolphin, was a kind of freshwater dolphin that lived only in the Yangtze River in China. It was often called the "Goddess of the Yangtze".
The baiji had a long, thin beak and a small dorsal fin. It could grow up to 2.5 meters long and weigh up to 230 kilograms. It lived in groups of 3 to 4 animals and fed on fish.
Sadly, the baiji is now thought to be extinct. The last confirmed sighting of a baiji in the wild was in 2002. In 2006, a team of scientists spent six weeks searching the Yangtze River for baiji, but they found none. They announced that the baiji was "functionally extinct".
There are many reasons for the extinction of the baiji. The main reason is the loss of their habitat. The Yangtze River has been heavily developed in the past 50 years. Many dams have been built on the river, which has changed the flow of the water and destroyed the baiji's living environment.
Pollution is another big problem. The water in the Yangtze River has become very polluted, which has killed many fish, the main food of the baiji. Also, the noise from boats has made it difficult for the baiji to communicate and find food.
The extinction of the baiji is a great loss to the world. It is a warning to us that we must take better care of our rivers and the animals that live in them. If we don't act now, more animals will disappear forever.
Where did the baiji live
A. In the Yellow River. B. In the Yangtze River.
C. In the Pearl River. D. In the Heilongjiang River.
What did the baiji feed on
A. Plants. B. Insects. C. Fish. D. Other animals.
When was the last confirmed sighting of a baiji in the wild
A. In 2002. B. In 2006. C. In 2016. D. In 2021.
Which of the following is NOT a reason for the extinction of the baiji
A. Loss of habitat. B. Water pollution.
C. Noise pollution. D. Hunting by humans.
What does the writer want to tell us
A. The baiji is a beautiful animal.
B. The Yangtze River is very important.
C. We should protect our rivers and animals.
D. Many animals are in danger now.
