I was given the book Running on Faith written by Jason Lester as a birthday gift last month. After I started reading, I really couldn’t keep my eyes off it. It is always inspiring to read a story of someone who has gone through obstacles to reach his goals.
Jason Lester is a disabled (残疾的) extreme athlete. When he was twelve years old, a fast car ran a red light and hit him. Then he was sent into the hospital with twenty broken bones and a seriously injured arm. Jason had always wanted to become a famous baseball player, but at that time that dream was gone.
However, Jason loved sports and he still wanted to be a good athlete. He began running and taking part in duathlons (铁人两项) in high school. Years later in 2004, he decided to start training for the Ironman, and has competed in many extreme races since then. In 2008, Jason became the first disabled athlete to complete the Ultraman (320 miles of biking, swimming and running), and it led him to an ESPY award (奖项) for Best Male Athlete With a Disability in 2009.
If you are in a bad situation and don’t know what to do, now, Running on Faith is a good book for you. If you love running and want to reach some race goals, this book is good for you, too. Anyway, this book is worth reading for everyone who loves reading and wants to turn dreams into reality.

Born and brought up in a small family in Kaliwal village in India, Veeranna Madiwalar had a childhood full of struggle. Even as his parents struggled to make ends meet, it was very difficult to pay his school fees. It was his uncle who supported his education. “He used to say that he saw a changemaker and artist in me, and he wanted me to complete my education,” he says.
After receiving his master’s degree in English and Kannada, he moved back to his hometown because he wanted to make education better for future generations. “I worked for four years before being made the headmaster of a school in 2016,” he says, adding that the old and poor building and lack of infrastructure (基础设施) made him think of his own school’s state.
Using his own money, he started small — he planted a few trees across the campus, and started repair work on the building. But he knew he could not fund the repair of the school alone and would need more help. So he used the power of social media (社交媒体) to raise money. “I started posting pictures of the school with my repairs on social media. Word spread and, surprisingly, many people came forward to help me,” he says.
Today this school is a far cry from what it used to be — with colourful walls, lots of infrastructure, trees, a garden, and a library with picture books and audio-visual resources (视听资源) in English and Kannada. And the number of students has grown from 76 to 136.
“The change is amazing,” says Suleman Sheikh, an official from the school. “It didn’t happen overnight. It was a slow journey, and everyone, even students, played a part in it. Today, the school stands proudly, and the students have a place they truly enjoy studying in.”
24. What led Veeranna to go back to Kaliwal village
A.The plan to complete his degree.
B.The wish to improve local education.

D.The decision to change his old school’s state.
25. How did Veeranna solve the problem of shortage of funds
A.By planting trees by himself.
B.By selling pictures to newspapers.
C.By working part-time as a repairman.
D.By turning to web-based communities.
26. What does the underlined part “a far cry” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Quite far.
B.Completely different.
C.Very similar.
D.Obviously sad.
27. What does Suleman want to stress
A.Well begun is half done.
B.More hands make light work.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

In the desert in Peru, over 300 new ancient drawings were discovered by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones (无人机). The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer (层) of rocks in the desert. The drawings are called “geoglyphs (地画)”. The Nazca Lines, which are a famous group of huge ancient drawings, include many different kinds of geoglyphs, from simple shapes to pictures of animals and plants, usually drawn with a single long, winding line.
The first geoglyph was discovered in 1927. Since then, scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs in the area. Now, using AI and drones, scientists have found 303 new geoglyphs. The discovery of one geoglyph used to take three or four years, but now may be done in two or three months. However, the AI program also made lots of mistakes — for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the scientists discovered only one actual geoglyph. Even so, the new method of turning up geoglyphs was much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones and AI.
To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for potential geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours looking at places the AI had advised. They took lots of pictures with drones and worked on the ground in Peru to check out the locations. Most of the new-found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are about nine meters in length. Many of them seem to show humans as well as animals.
The scientists are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean. For one thing, the scientists discovered paths in the Nazca Desert. The scientists believe these paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travellers. The scientists also believe the larger geoglyphs are different and may have been used for celebrations or other special events.
28. How were the Nazca geoglyphs created
A.By adding red rocks.
B.By carving in the soil.
C.By copying winding lines.
D.By clearing rock surface layers.
29. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 2
A.To stress the efficiency of the new method.
B.To show the drones’ imperfection.
C.To argue for more funding.
D.To prove AI’s accuracy.
30. What can be inferred about the process of discovering new geoglyphs
A.Drones were used for initial checks.
B.Fieldwork confirmed AI suggestions.
C.AI identified all geoglyphs precisely.
D.Satellites ignored some new geoglyphs.
31. What do the scientists think the larger geoglyphs were likely to be used for
A.Wildlife adoration.
B.Desert decoration.
C.Special occasions.
D.Road signs.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within ten years or so, we would be able to communicate with one another through small earpieces with built-in microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Such is the belief among certain parents that the technology is imminent and they’re wondering if their kids should learn a second language.
It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating “Noes Bueno dormer mucho” into “It’s not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent (对等词) in the target language is actually the easy part of a translator’s job. But even this seems to be a difficult job for computers.
It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t — or shouldn’t — involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. Think about all the related clues that help us understand what someone is trying to say: volume, gesture, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt a machine that can’t understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.
32. What does the underlined word “imminent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Ready.
B.Confusing.
C.Unpractical.
D.Coming.
33. Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent
A.The real meaning of words can vary.
B.Their data is not rich enough.
C.Their accuracy needs big improvement.
D.A man’s soul hasn’t been breathed in them.
34. What view does the author hold about translation
A.Proper translation can be difficult for computers.
B.Slight differences doesn’t matter in translation.
C.Machines will translate our world properly.
D.Cultures need more attention than words used.
35. What is the best title for the text
A.An Expert’s Prediction.
B.Travel without Headache.
C.The Pleasure of Translation.
D.Will the Language Barrier (障碍) Actually Fall

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

The Quality I Value Most
Good morning, everyone!
Among all good qualities, honesty is the one I value most.
First, honesty builds trust between people. If we always tell the truth, friends and family will believe us and open their hearts to us. Besides, being honest helps us stay true to ourselves and avoid endless lies to cover mistakes. Without honesty, every relationship will break sooner or later.
I will keep honest all the time and hope everyone can cherish this precious quality.
Thank you for your attention.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I gently patted his shoulder and told him I knew he had trained hard for months. I told him running was only about challenging himself instead of caring about others’ laughter. No matter how slow he was, finishing the race meant he won. After a long silence, he raised his head with bright eyes and nodded, willing to join the run.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The whistle blew and all kids rushed forward. David fell behind at once, struggling to keep pace. Other runners finished one by one, yet he kept moving his legs steadily. When he finally crossed the finishing line, all people clapped warmly. Tears rolled down his face. I realized true courage lies in daring to try despite difficulties.
