I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Apparently, I am not alone. A 2024 survey found that approximately 67% of U.S. AI users are also polite and show gratitude toward AI search engines. Some even joked about the cost: if every polite word consumes electricity, the bill must be high. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman replied: “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.”
In reality, of course, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness; they lack consciousness, feelings or social needs. From a purely utilitarian (功利主义的) standpoint, all those pleases and thank yous are just flushing money down the toilet.
Still, there may be value that isn’t immediately measurable in showing gratitude toward AI. Psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough carried out an experiment in which they divided participants into three groups, asking the first to list things they are grateful for, while others listed daily troubles or simply kept journals. After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health.
What’s true of gratitude is also true of kindness and generosity more generally. Experiments at UC Riverside found that performing “five small acts of kindness per week” produced steady increases in happiness. This idea isn’t new. The medieval thinker Maimonides wrote that “it is better for a person to give one coin to a thousand poor people than to give a thousand coins to one poor person.” He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving charity and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue into a habit.
So perhaps all of our pleases and thank yous to AI have value, even if they cost OpenAI millions of dollars annually. Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, reinforces positive habits of courtesy (礼貌), patience and empathy. In our increasingly digital and automated world, preserving these human qualities may be more valuable than the cost of a little extra electricity. Ultimately, the beneficiary of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.

Moving to a new city can be an anxious experience. It’s often difficult to develop a sense of connection when you’re unfamiliar with a place’s traditions and history. Now that I’m a new resident of Pittsburg, one way I’ve found to engage with my new environment is through the art murals (壁画) found around town.
Whenever I take a walk around the Old Town area, I stop to admire the mural at Heritage Park Plaza (HPP). As a newcomer, I find myself identifying with one section of the mural in particular. It shows a newly arrived family with their belongings, transitioning (过渡) into a photograph of a wedding. To me, this symbolizes establishing general roots — something I hope to do here in Pittsburg as well.
Another mural I enjoy is located on the side of the Ace Hardware building on Railroad Avenue. This colorful piece honors the indigenous heritage (土著遗产) of the Pittsburg area, specifically the Bay Miwok people who lived here long before European settlers arrived. The mural acknowledges the lives of these indigenous groups, whose cultures were reshaped by newcomers. Today, these cultures coexist, a reality the mural beautifully illustrates.
Lastly, there’s an amazing mural on the history of the Latino identity, located on the back of the Cardenas Markets near the highway entrance. The mural records the pre-history, transformation, and ongoing cultural presence of the Latino community in Pittsburg. As someone who shares in that heritage, I find it deeply meaningful to see it proudly displayed as visitors enter the town. It’s a visual welcome that makes me feel connected to the city and its values.
These murals have become my way of bonding with Pittsburg, offering me a sense of belonging and helping me appreciate the town’s rich history. They serve as both reminders of the past and invitations to become a part of the ongoing story of this community. I encourage everyone to walk through their city, or any new town, and explore public art to better understand the community’s identity.

Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem — a plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.

Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who have devoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists — work that he says is a better livelihood than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation,” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says.
