To know body language better, Christina Stach, a 25-year-old healthcare provider, read What Everybody Is Saying by Joe Navarro. “It changed how I communicated with everyone,” she says. While approximately 80% of our interactions with each other are nonverbal — from birth, our body language sends out clues to what we’re thinking, and Stach says, “We can learn to exercise control over it.”
Becoming aware of her own body language, the physician recognized her preferred way of sitting with her arms and legs crossed. While it was comfortable for her, patients considered it discomfort with them. She found the same to be true with eye contact. “I don’t make much eye contact with people because it makes me uncomfortable,” Stach says, “but it makes others think I’m inattentive.”
Armed with the knowledge, she began uncrossing her arms and legs and making more eye contact when in conversation, “Using positive body language helps strengthen patient interactions, and once these habits become natural, you may notice your patients are more receptive to your advice,” she says.
“Talking with patients at eye level is important,” Stach says. “It shows them that I’m here to listen to what they have to say and to make joint decisions about their healthcare.” She recommends that physicians lower their eye level as much as possible by sitting on a low chair facing their patient while the patient remains seated on the exam table.
Eye contact is another important element. “If you’re typing notes into your computer without looking at your patients — even if you are listening and can say everything they said, your body says you aren’t listening,” Stach says. “And you no longer have a closed space of attention with each other.”
Anyway, body language can send a message of care and trust, “In medicine, we’re often in our patient’s face during a medical exam, but when talking with them, being too close may be intrusive, especially in Western cultures where we have broader personal body comfortable distance,” Stach notes. “But in Eastern cultures that distance is much narrower. So, when interacting with people from these cultures, stepping back is seen as offensive(冒犯的) — that’s something to keep in mind.”

Scientists have revealed much of the basics about earthquakes: tectonic plates (构造板块) move, causing strain energy (应变能) to build up, and that energy eventually releases in the form of an earthquake. However, forecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake. In addition to causing a tsunami that led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it resulted in more than 18,000 deaths.
In recent years, researchers have been trying to figure out a possible relation between the sun and earthquakes. Based on a previous study that connected solar activity with earthquakes, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba (UT) cast light on this possibility, confirming that sunspot numbers had some influence on earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by solar heat, played a role.
“Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties and underground water movement,” said Junqueira Saldanha, leader of the research team. “Such changes can make rocks tend to break apart. For example, the changes in rainfall and snowmelt can affect the pressure on tectonic plate boundaries. While these factors may not be the main drivers of earthquakes, they could still be playing a role that can help to predict earthquakes.”
Among other findings, the researchers used mathematical and computational methods to analyze earthquake data alongside solar activity records and surface temperatures on Earth. They observed that when they included Earth surface temperatures into their model, the forecasting became more accurate, especially for shallow earthquakes. “That makes sense, since heat and water mostly affect the upper layers of the Earth’s crust (地壳),” said Saldanha.
The findings suggest the transfer of solar heat to the surface of the Earth does affect earthquakes, however minutely, and that incorporating solar activity predictions into detailed Earth temperature models may help issue earthquake forecasts. “It’s an exciting direction, and we hope our study can decipher the bigger picture of what causes earthquakes,” said Saldanha.

Using artificial intelligence to create artworks increases artists’ productivity and generates more positive reactions, according to a study involving submissions to a popular art-sharing website by more than 50,000 users. But generative AI works are more likely to display stereotypical (刻板印象的) themes, reducing the novelty of an artist’s work.
The researchers tracked 4 million works published on the website by the artists. The artists self-divided into two groups: those who continued to work using traditional methods — a sort of control group, and those who adopted AI. The latter group, numbering about 5,800, were identified by the use of tags (标签) on their work, such as “AI-generated” or the names of the AI tools. Works posted into AI art communities on the site were also included.
Artists who adopted AI tools saw their productivity measured by the number of works posted increase by 25 percent over the study period. They also saw a 50 percent rise in the number of “favourites” their work received over six months. But novelty, measured by the subject matter and specific details of the work, decreased for the AI-using group.
“The study completely tracks with my own experience with these tools and spaces,” says Andres Guadamuz at the University of Sussex, UK. “At first, it felt that you could do anything, bring anything in your head into existence, but the more I used them, the more I kept coming back to themes I liked.”
Guadamuz points out that he isn’t judging the quality of the images produced by generative AI nor their originality, nor the creativity involved in the process. All these things are often hotly contested, with some artists saying that generative AI is using their works as training data and limiting their ability to be recognized as creatives.
Zhou at Boston University is also considering these questions. He says, “The generative technology accelerates the ability to produce. But it raises other issues: Are we foregoing the process of understanding what goes into being creative and producing something meaningful, in favour of just being able to brute force our way with technology ”

We sat quietly for a minute to clear our minds, and we decided to retrace all the places we had been that day step by step.
