A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded (鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.

Ants have the ability to smell cancer cells in humans, a new study has discovered, suggesting they could be used for cancer diagnosis in future. Researchers from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) discovered that ant species Formica fusca has a well developed sense of smell. It was able to differentiate (区分) cancerous cells from healthy cells in humans, thanks to their sense of smell, limited trials revealed.
To conduct their research, the scientists performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. First, the specialists exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of cancerous human cells. This smell was then associated with a reward of sugar solution. In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancerous cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancerous cells.
As such, the scientists found that ants discriminate between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous lines. After training, Formica fusca ants are able to detect volatile organic compounds given off by cancerous cells. This first study shows that ants have high potential, are capable of learning very quickly, at lower cost, and are efficient, CNRS points out in a news release.
This isn’t the first time that scientists have used the animal sense of smell to locate cancer cells. “Dogs’ noses are well suited for medical use. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. Ants therefore represent a fast, efficient, inexpensive, and highly discriminant detection tool for detection of cancer cell volatiles,” the team explained, “our approach could potentially be adapted to a range of other complex smell detection tasks including the detection of narcotics, spoiled food, or other diseases.”
But more clinical tests must be carried out before they could be used in clinical settings like hospitals, the team said. They suggest that in future, ants could turn out to be better than dogs when it comes to locating cancer cells in humans. Who knows Let’s wait and see.

The new stretchy (有弹性的) electronic skin, developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, solves a major bottleneck in the emerging technology. Existing e-skin technology loses sensing accuracy (传感精度) as the material stretches (拉伸), but that is not the case with this new version.
E-skin technology senses pressure from contact, letting the attached machine know how much force to use to, for example, grab a cup or touch a person. But, when traditional e-skin is stretched, it also senses that deformation. That reading creates additional noise that skews (使有误差) the sensors’ ability to sense the pressure. That could lead to a robot using too much force to grab something.
“As human skin has to stretch and bend to accommodate our movements, so too does e-skin,” said Nanshu Lu, a professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering who led the project. “No matter how much our e-skin stretches, the pressure response doesn’t change, and that is a significant achievement.” Lu envisages the stretchy e-skin as a component to a robot hand capable of the same level of softness and sensitivity (灵敏度) in touch as a human hand. This could be applied to medical care, where robots could check a patient’s pulse, wipe a body or massage a body part.
Why is a robot nurse or physical therapist necessary Around the world, millions of people are aging and are in need of care, more than the global medical system can provide. “In the future, if we have more elderly people than available caregivers, it’s going to be a crisis worldwide,” Lu said. “We need to find new ways to take care of people efficiently and also gently, and robots are an important piece of that puzzle.”
Beyond medicine, human-caring robots could be deployed in disasters. They could search for injured and trapped people in an earthquake or a collapsed building, for example, and apply on-the-spot care, such as administering CPR (心肺复苏术).
