For years, as an art influencer, I lived online, documenting all aspects of my life and
desiring more followers on Instagram. A constant panic over lost connections, the emptiness
of endless scrolling, and a nearly missed car accident left me feeling drained. Overwhelmed,
I shut down my account and bought an old Nokia. Then, everything changed.
Only after giving up my smartphone did I realize how distracted (分神的) and anxious I
had become. Quitting was difficult, but as months passed, subtle changes built up. When the

out that the only people I really need to contact on the go are those I am working with. What

There are millions ---- possibly billions ---- of ponds (池塘). Yet for a century or so, they
are poorly understood and scientists have paid them very little attention. This neglect (忽略)
not have mattered if it were not. For increasing evidence that ponds are extremely important
habitats for wildlife.
Ponds are being shown more bio-diverse than rivers or lakes. Interestingly, this seems to
be partly due to the small size of ponds, which allows them to have a wide range of conditions.
The community in a pond with clear water will be very different to that in a nearby seasonal
pond made cloudy by farm animals. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams,
as flowing water tends to equalize water chemistry.
So why have we ignored such a vital part of the natural world A key reason appears to
be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all
that important. Rather than study ponds, scientists in the past typically headed for the largest
lake or river they could find.
Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we look at
the human-made examples around us and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient
origin. In our new book Ponds, Pools and Puddles, we show that ponds have clearly existed

on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have
been a constant presence.
Now, views are taking on new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an
international agreement, introduced a proposal on small wetlands, including ponds, giving
crucial recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is
gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides

At a restaurant in Florence, a group gathers to discuss Sarah Winman’s Still Life. On the
walls hang the photos of the destructive 1966 Amo flood that planted the seed of her story.
Participants, once strangers, form a literary circle. This is a new type of holiday centering on
reading rather than typical leisure (休闲).
Lyn Margerison, one of the participants, was first drawn to an online advertisement of
the Books in Places project and has since travelled from Dorset to Florence, Budapest and
beyond. “It showed one of my very favourite books arranged on a table with a glass of wine,
set against a square in Florence. The caption (说明文字) asked: ‘Do you enjoy reading books
in the places in which they are set ’” she recalls.
Books in Places was founded by Paul Wright in 2023. Now he organizes short breaks in
the UK and longer journeys to many countries, where people read in the very places stories
are set.
“Location is at the heart of everything,” says Wright. “Exploring the streets, landscapes
and atmosphere of the setting (背景) provides a deep understanding of the story. A scene that
was once just words on a page suddenly comes alive when you’ve walked the same alleys,

tasted the same food or felt the same light as the characters.”
This isn’t just niche travel. A 2025 survey reveals that many UK travellers pick
destinations for reading, among which Millennials (千禧一代) rise to 60%. Meanwhile, it’s
estimated that literary tourism may hit $3.3 bn by 2034. Readers no longer just read by the
pool but want reading to open new views of the world: sailing the Nile with Death on the Nile,
