When it was sunny and the sky was blue, my father and I usually climbed the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I had a lot of conversations. It was a good time for me to talk with my father, develop my patience and think about life.
One day, we were having our holiday in a place of interest. It was famous for the great sight at the top of the high mountain. As I had climbed mountains so many times before, I was quite sure I would have no problem. So during the first few hours of the climbing, I really enjoyed the beautiful flowers, green trees and birds’ songs. However, as time went by, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing, but my father told me, “Son, I know how tired you are. But if you quit halfway, you will see nothing. Only when you arrive at the top can you see the great sight. So it is with life.”
At that moment, I was really touched. With hope in my heart, I gained my confidence again. To my great surprise, tiredness and pain went away soon. When reaching the top of the mountain, we saw the greatest sight we had never seen before. We seemed to be standing on the top of white clouds, with the blue sky as clear as crystal (水晶).

Weather and Climate—What’s the Difference
Many people think weather and climate are the same thing. But they are not.
Weather is what happens outside right now. It can change very quickly. For example, it is raining this morning, but the sun is shining in the afternoon. Sometimes the temperature goes up and down in just one day. Weather tells us how the air feels at a specific (特定的) time and place.
Climate is different. Climate is the average (平均的) weather in a place over a long time—usually 30 years or more. For example, Fujian has a warm and wet climate. It does not mean it rains every day in Fujian. It means that over many years, Fujian usually gets a lot of rain and has warm temperatures.
Let us look at an example. Last summer, a city in northern China had a very hot day. The temperature was 40℃. That was the weather for that day. But does that city have a hot climate No. Because over the past 30 years, the average summer temperature there is only 25℃. The hot day was just a short change.
Scientists are now studying how climates change around the world. They use computers and satellites (卫星) to collect data. In the past 100 years, the Earth’s climate has become warmer. This is called global warming. So remember: Weather is what you get. Climate is what you expect.
56. What is true about weather
A.It stays the same for 30 years. B.It changes very quickly.
C.It is the same as climate. D.It never changes in one day.
57. Which of the following is an example of “climate”
A.It is raining heavily this morning. B.The sun is shining right now.
C.Fujian is usually warm and wet. D.Last Tuesday was very hot.
58. Why does the writer talk about a city in northern China
A.To show what weather is. B.To show how to use a satellite.
C.To describe a cold place. D.To explain why summer is hot.
59. What are scientists doing now to study climate
A.They are changing the weather every day.
B.They are living in Fujian for 30 years.
C.They are using computers and satellites to collect data.
D.They are making the Earth warmer on purpose (故意地).
60. In which part of a magazine (杂志) can you read the text
A.Culture. B.Health. C.Sports. D.Nature.

Friendship energy, also called “frenergy”, is the feeling you get from spending time with your friends. But what if you live far from your best friends and can’t meet them as often as you want Well, here comes the good news: according to a new study, we can get the same feeling from elsewhere.
The Oddfellows is an organization (组织) that helps elderly people live a better life with care and friendship. Last July, it asked 2,000 British people aged over 50 to take part in a survey. The survey studied what activities could bring people the same warm feeling as staying with friends. The results were surprising.

Besides, 46% got happiness from getting text messages, and 39% from watching TV. Dr Veronica Lamarche from Essex University explained why this happened: “People need different kinds of energy. Their needs change with their ages, or whether they are introverted (内向的) or extroverted (外向的).”
Jane Nelson, the leader of The Oddfellows, said, “We are glad to find that people can get ‘frenergy’ in lots of different ways. So no matter what your friendship circle looks like, everyone can share and get this warm feeling in their own way.”

Dear Tom,
I’m glad you’re interested in our school study trip last Friday.
We went to Xiamen Botanical Garden first. We learned lots about different plants and listened carefully to our teacher’s talk. We took many photos of lovely flowers and strange trees along the way. It was great fun to learn something new about plants and flowers.
In the afternoon, we visited the Handicraft Workshop. We picked up colorful leaves and made our own leaf print works. I took my leaf craft home as a special gift for my mom.
This trip was amazing and meaningful. It helped me get close to nature and brought me great joy. I felt relaxed after busy schoolwork and hoped to take part in more fun study trips.
Yours,
Li Hua
