A recent protest by Greenpeace activists against an offshore oil rig off Greenland has started a new round of conflicts between the oil industry and environmental groups, which may become a major environmental battle of the decade. On one side, global oil companies are eager to explore new oil fields to satisfy the world’s huge demand for fuel. On the other side, environmental organizations are trying to fight against climate change by blocking new high-risk oil exploration projects.
The oil rig in question is operated by a British energy company in Baffin Bay near Greenland. After the company found possible oil resources in the area, major international oil firms rushed to obtain local drilling licenses, likely triggering a new oil rush in the Arctic. Oil companies are enthusiastic about Arctic exploration for good reasons. Many developing countries now control their own oil resources, and traditional oil-producing regions suffer from frequent political instability. In contrast, the Arctic is governed by politically stable developed countries. Besides, the area holds massive undiscovered oil reserves.
However, Arctic oil drilling faces severe environmental challenges. The Arctic ecology is extremely fragile and has already been damaged by global warming. It is home to various rare whales, seals and migratory birds. Worse still, the special Arctic environment greatly increases the risk of oil pollution. Low temperatures and thick sea ice slow down the decomposition of leaked oil. Once an oil spill happens, the pollution will be far more serious than the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. Toxic oil can be spread widely by polar animals, leaving long-term damage to local marine ecosystems.
Besides, drilling in Arctic waters is extremely risky and difficult. Drilling equipment has to work at an ultra-deep depth, and floating icebergs constantly threaten the safety of oil rigs. Worse, drilling is only feasible for three months a year. If an oil leak occurs, people cannot carry out remedy work for nearly nine months. Additionally, no effective technology exists to collect oil trapped under ice, and clean-up resources in the remote Arctic are extremely limited.
Statistics also show a high risk of major oil spills in Arctic exploration. Shockingly, huge Arctic oil reserves can only support global oil consumption for less than three years. In the long run, continuously exploring high-risk oil fields cannot solve global energy problems. According to official energy data, relying on expanded oil exploitation will lead to catastrophic global warming. To control temperature rise within a safe range, the world must stabilize and gradually reduce oil consumption with the help of new energy alternatives.
Therefore, Greenpeace’s call to ban Arctic oil drilling is reasonable for ecological and climate protection. Similar environmental bans in history, such as whaling bans and ancient forest protection, have proved effective. Most people have had such an experience: when switching from one task to another, their brains temporarily stick to the old thinking mode. Even realizing a method no longer works, people still fail to shift their minds timely. Neuroscientists (神经学家) define the ability to adjust and change strategies as “cognitive flexibility” (认知灵活性), a key advanced brain function. It enables humans to abandon outdated rules and adapt to changing situations. The lack of cognitive flexibility is linked to many brain diseases, including depression, ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease.
A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Riverside has uncovered a key brain structure that helps people switch thinking modes. The research confirms that the locus coeruleus (LC脑干蓝斑核), a tiny structure in the brainstem, plays a vital role in flexible thinking and behavioral rule-switching.
Despite its small size, the LC greatly influences the whole brain. It produces norepinephrine, a substance regulating attention, learning, stress responses and decision-making. Scientists have long guessed its connection with cognitive flexibility, but how it works remained a mystery.
To solve the puzzle, researchers conducted experiments on mice. The mice were first trained to find food rewards through fixed sensory cues. When the rule was suddenly changed, they needed to abandon old strategies and adopt new ones. When researchers controlled and weakened LC activity, the mice failed to adapt to new rules. They repeatedly stuck to outdated methods and made far more attempts to learn new skills.
Further research shows that LC signals can reorganize neural activity in the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质), a brain area responsible for planning and decision-making. Without effective LC function, neurons in this area become overactive and respond to messy information, making the brain’s neural network disordered. In short, the LC keeps the brain’s neural signals clear and efficient during decision-making.
The study also finds that healthy brains can switch between different activity modes while learning new rules. However, suppressed LC activity blurs neural activity patterns, making the brain unable to enter the correct learning mode. This discovery explains why many neurological disorders result from failed neural network reorganization, rather than merely too much or too little brain activity.
