Who doesn’t know Pinocchio The nose of the wooden puppet (玩偶) grows long when he lies. He is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature. However, the man who brought him to life, Carlo Collodi, is far less famous.
Collodi was born in Florence, Italy. He started working as a writer when he was about 20 years old, writing articles for different newspapers.
He lived during the Italian Risorgimento (意大利统一运动时期) in the 19th century, a period when Italy became an independent country. Collodi tried to help not only as a soldier but also with his words. He started two newspapers and wrote short stories that spoke out against an unfair society.
However, Collodi is best known around the world as a writer for children. His interest in writing for young people began in 1875 when he was translating (翻译) many French fairy tales. These stories made him want to write his own fairy tales as well as textbooks for teaching.
His most famous work, The Adventures of Pinocchio (《木偶奇遇记》) , began as a short story. In 1881, Collodi sent a story about a wooden puppet to a children’s magazine. He described it as “a bit of foolishness” and never thought it would become so popular around the world.
“I don’t think Pinocchio is a bad boy. Instead, I prefer to see him as an ordinary child. His mistakes come from his childish nature,” wrote Mei Zihan, a member of the China Writers Association. “Every child can see themselves in Pinocchio.”

Have you seen people online drinking hot water or practicing slow exercises like Baduanjin These are part of a new trend (趋势) called “Becoming Chinese”. It started with a funny video by a Chinese-American vlogger. She jokingly told her followers, “Starting tomorrow, you’re going to be Chinese.” Surprisingly, plenty of young people from the US to Europe are getting into copying Chinese daily habits.
So what do these “new Chinese” normally do They drink hot water instead of cold water. They fill their thermoses (保温杯) with goji berry tea. Some manage to learn traditional practices like calligraphy or kung fu. They say these habits help them deal with stress and negative feelings. One netizen shared that giving up cold water was a good way to solve his stomach problems.

Dear Peter,
Welcome to Jiangxi. I’m Li Hua, a volunteer of our school.
I’m writing to tell you some important Chinese customs to make your stay smooth.
For greetings, we usually shake hands politely when we meet each other, and we seldom hug strangers. At the dinner table, we wait for elders to start eating first and never stick chopsticks upright in rice bowls. When you take part in parties, arriving on time or a few minutes late is polite, and you can bring small gifts like fruit.
If you feel confused about cultural differences or meet trouble, please respect local customs first. You can talk with your teachers and classmates at any time. They are warm and ready to help you out.
I hope you can have a great time here!
Yours,
Li Hua
