Liu Heng was Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother was once ill for three years. He attended to her each day after dealing with affairs of state. For safety reasons, he would test the medicine before he took it to his mother. His filial piety (孝顺) was praised throughout the kingdom. During his rule, the population flourished and the country prospered.
Tanzi was a viscount in the State of Tan during the Spring and Autumn Period. His aged parents suffered from eye diseases and needed to drink deer’s milk as part of their treatment. He therefore disguised himself in a deerskin and sneaked into a herd of deer in the mountains to obtain deer's milk. Once, when he was taking deer's milk, a hunter mistook him for a deer and was going to shoot him. He revealed himself and told the truth to the hunter. The hunter respected his filial piety and escorted him out of the mountains.
Huang Xiang lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty. His mother passed away when he was 9. He would cool his father’s pillow and mat with a fan in the hot summer and warm his father’s quilts and cushions with his body in the cold winter. It was the summer before junior year. I was a waitress at a little restaurant. My duties were straightforward: taking orders, delivering food and cleaning tables. I got really good at managing multiple tasks, and having a lot of responsibilities made me more responsible.
These values and skills are what numerous studies hold up as the important reasons why teenagers should work during the summer. They’re what teachers mention when they encourage us to get jobs. I developed those skills. But I don’t think that’s the main benefit high school students get from working.
So much happened in the interstitial (空隙的) time and spaces between our roles as waitresses, cooks and customers. This is where I think the value of a high school job lies: learning how to form a community with people I never would have otherwise known.
High school students spend about seven hours a day in classes, and then often stay afterward for school-sponsored sports or activities. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to be wrapped up in school. But what I find is that a job can serve as a relief from the academic tasks of high school.
This relief came not from avoiding people, but from engaging with a community I would never have found in the halls of my high school. The people I met at the restaurant taught me that you can become friends with those decades older than you and strangers who have none of the same interests or hobbies as you do. They taught me that you can wildly disagree with someone and still respect them, learn from them, and love them.
28. What is commonly believed to be the main benefit teenagers get from work
A.Earning money for college. B.Learning to form a community.
C.Developing responsibility and skills. D.Making friends with different people.
29. What does the author say about high school life
A.It lacks meaningful activities. B.It focuses on academics.
C.It is highly school-centered. D.It provides adequate social opportunities.
30. What did the author learn from people at the restaurant
A.Friends should share similar interests. B.Workplace relationships are temporary.
C.True friendship requires constant agreement. D.Meaningful connections can bridge differences.
31. What is the author’s main conclusion about her job experience
A.It helped improve her academic performance.
B.Its greatest value went beyond skill development.
C.It confirmed traditional views about student jobs.
D.Its main benefit was earning teachers’ approval.
D
I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. It’s not famous for producing success stories, or CEOs. My childhood was fairly free and uncared-for. My parents only cared about partying and themselves, which left me to figure out life on my own.
Being fairly successful now and living in a much better neighborhood, I still think about the days of working to buy my own school lunch. Even though growing up privileged (享有特权的) would have been great, there are so many things I wouldn’t trade from growing up poor.
You had to learn to survive on your own. Your neighborhood was rough and full of people looking to take advantage of you. These experiences have made you stronger. You observe your environment, keep up your guard at any time, and learn to trust your courage. A Harvard education is an amazing thing, but street smarts will give you something that you can never learn from books.
When you have nothing, your dreams fill the emptiness. You desire success, money, power, happiness, etc. You grew up watching rich people on TV and wanting to be someone like them. These dreams lead to passion, goals, and achievements. Even if you never make millions, you fulfill your dreams by doing better than your parents did, and going further in your career.
From a very young age, you had to learn to budget for gas, food, weekend money, and clothes. You had to work harder for everything in your life, so you appreciated it more and it has taught you that work ethic (职业道德) is usually not a natural, but a learned thing. It’s hard to teach. When the privileged ones quit for the day, you didn’t, because for you there was no fall back plan or safety net. At the end of the day, you’ll do what it takes to survive.
32. What do we know about the author’s parents
A.They lived a happy life. B.They were not responsible.
C.They often held parties at home. D.They trained the author to be independent.
33. What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 2
A.He is disappointed with his present life. B.He envies those growing up privileged.
C.He values his early experiences. D.He prefers a poor life.
34. What did the author get from his early life
A.The way to be rich. B.The tips on working hard.
C.The dream to be successful. D.The skills to be a street leader.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Your Early Life Affects You a Lot B.It Takes Poor People More to Succeed
C.You Should Be Grateful for What You Have
D.Growing up Poor Takes You Further in Your Life

It was early autumn when the school organized a weekend camping trip to a nearby mountain forest. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning golden, and the students were buzzing with excitement. After weeks of studying and exams, everyone welcomed the chance to enjoy nature and relax outdoors.
Among the students were four close friends: Leo, Eric, Jason, and Alice. Though their personalities were quite different, they made a great team. Alice, the only girl in the group, was smart and well-prepared. She had brought along a compass, a map, and even a first-aid kit.
After arriving at the campsite, the students pitched their tents, gathered firewood, and helped prepare a simple meal. The campsite was surrounded by tall pine trees, and in the distance, a mountain stream could be heard. The teachers reminded everyone to stay within the marked area and never go off-trail alone.
After lunch, the students were allowed to explore in small groups. Leo’s group decided to follow a trail leading up a hill. According to Alice, there was a small lookout point that offered a beautiful view of the valley.
As they walked, Jason kept running ahead, calling the others to hurry. “Let’s see what’s up there!” he shouted. Alice followed closely behind, holding the map. Leo walked at a steady pace, checking that no one fell behind. Eric lagged at the end, clearly nervous about being so deep in the forest.
The path became narrower as they climbed. Birds chirped in the trees, and dry leaves crunched under their shoes. The sunlight filtered through the branches above, casting dancing shadows on the ground. After about an hour, they reached the edge of a rocky area covered in leaves. The trail began to twist more than expected, and many landmarks they passed didn’t match what was on the map.
“I think the viewpoint is just beyond this slope (斜坡),” Jason said, pointing excitedly.
Leo looked uncertain. “Let’s be careful. It looks slippery.”
But before anyone could stop him, Jason had already climbed ahead.

Just as he reached the top of the slope, his foot slipped. He fell down and hurt his ankle terribly, crying out in pain. Alice quickly took out the first-aid kit from her bag. Leo and Eric helped Jason sit on a big stone. Alice carefully cleaned his wound and wrapped it with bandages. Soon Jason felt much better.
With the first aid finished, they realized a new challenge: how to get back. Jason could hardly walk. The three others supported him on each side and moved slowly along the flat trail step by step. After about an hour’s tough walking, they safely got back to the campsite and told the teachers about the accident.
